Can a Newborn Get a Passport Without a Birth Certificate?

January
Question:
Humans say...
Tammy
No. Birth certificate is a must
Ashley
take your birth registration to a registry and get his birth certificate ordered. They can rush it for a fee I believe.
Raylene
this. We had to pay extra to get his birth certificate rushed AND his passport rushed.
Josie
Raylene they cant rush the certificate until vital statistics is done putting him in the system. They’re the ones I’m waiting on, not the registry unfortunately
Raylene
anyone you can call and get things moving? I know when I told them our date of travel it seemed like suddenly they weren’t as busy as they lead me to believe
Danyelle
No it is necessary. Did you have it rushed via registry? I had mine in 48 hours. As i was travelling.
Passports can be rushed as well just have to do it all at Harry Hays
Kaisin
Ours took 2.5months before the birth certificate arrived. You need birth cert to get a passport
Victor
You can rush the birth certificate at the registry and then also rush the passport.
Evan
Are you sure you need a passport? I know we travelled to the US with a baby with just the record of live birth from the hospital and that was good enough - but that was ~5 years ago so not sure if it’s changed.
Maybe call the US Border people and ask?
Kaisin
Flying : passport needed
Driving: birth cert will be good enough
We just came back from US by car, and birth cert was good enough.

I hope the bridge to Hawaii is finished so they can drive !
Janay
Kaisin do you know how old driving with a birth certificate is good enough? I’m going to the states with a 9 1/2 month old. Would he be fine with just a birth certificate?
Kaisin
Janay we went in with a 3months old. No issue .
Kaisin
There has been discussions where if it’s only parent bringing the kid in, they may run into trouble. Suspicion of child abduction by one parent
Jean
Janay , I believe it is 14 and under with birth certificate if you are driving across
Sidra
Same issue with me but i called registry and they issued me birth certificate in rush it take a week and after that u can apply for urgent passport next day pickup
Sarah
If flying you need a passport
Brenda
Go to Harry Hays
Downtown Calgary
Evelyn
We asked to have ours rushed at the registry not Harry hays
Brenda
At the Harry hays building
They do it right there
I was there and they did it on a Friday because I was leaving on Monday am and my passport had expired
Brenda
But I’m not a baby with new passport
Jan
Maybe request the burth certificate again through purolater since the other one is stuck in the mail?
Christin
When did you order the birth certificate? You might want to call and check in the status of that... and like others said, you can rush a passport. Overnight is possible. It costs a ton, but if you have tickets to go, it’ll be worth it.

Did you order a birth certificate? They don’t just send them, they have to be ordered
Josie
Beverly yes I did and they haven’t even sent it out from vital statistics yet. We’re going to have to cancel our trip because of this.
Beverly
Josie Howell oh no!! Can you try taking your hospital registration or something to the passport office and see??
Heidi
Call Alberta Vital Statistics — they print the birth certificates.
Or go to the registry & have them contact vital stats for you.
We just had to have our baby’s redone due to a spelling error & AMA was super helpful to speed up the process
Josie
Heidi Lund I did! They haven’t even sent it out yet
Heidi
Josie Howell Reorder one from AMA & tell them your story. They were very helpful for me.
Melanie
Good luck
Megan
Why is alberta sooo slow for this! My daughter was born in BC - You can apply for the birth certificate online and I got it a week later
Josie
Megan ughhhh so crazy! It’s been 7 weeks and we have to cancel our entire vacation because we don’t have a birth certificate yet
Heather
This is not normal. When my 2nd son was born in mid October a couple of years ago, we had our bc within 3 weeks, and passport days later. We travelled out of country by flight when he was 7 weeks old.
Something is amiss. It does not take this long in Alberta. Your baby’s info may not have been submitted or processed properly by a staff person either at the hospital or somewhere along the line.
I would be escalating like hell until you have found someone to sit on the phone with you or in person with you to enter that info. 7 weeks is NoT normal in Alberta.
Megan
Heather Spearman OBery the hospital doesnt process birth certificates, the person has to physically go into the registry and apply for it there
Heather
Megan times have changed since last year
Megan
Heather Spearman OBery no it's been the same for the 5 years I've worked there
you apply for benefits and all the paperwork on the birth registration, but you have to apply for the birth certificate separately at the registry.
Heather
Megan
I swear I had a kid in 2017. Anyway, what I’m trying to say to OP is that somewhere in the process someone has dropped the ball.
Kaisin
Heather, we were told that it will just take 3 weeks for BC to come, we went to registry at 3 weeks to pay but nothing came, waited until 5 weeks, I called up my registry who told me to check with hospital , called up hospital and got bounced around until I got vital stats number. Called up Edmonton, lady said that they just received 1100 applications because of postal delays and they needed time to file it. Hospital sent out the forms on August 14th, and they receive it only on 2nd week of Sept. I remember commenting about, if the mail have legs and walk, they prob reach Edmonton in such a long duration. BC came in a soft envelope after 2.5months and it was sadly squashed and folded on one side.

My babies were born on nov 2 and I went and applied at the registry office.. for an extra 20$ they will fast track the birth certificate and it took only 2 days! You have to go Harry Hayes to get the passport.. I was there today and it took over 2 hours so I recommend go right when it opens to beat the line!
Erin
Yes you can. I went to Mexico w my daughter at 10 days old. They granted a temp passport as we had no ID She wasn’t even registered in system as being born. Nevermind BC issued.

Obtaining a Newborn's Passport Before the Birth Certificate Arrives
If you're planning to travel internationally with your newborn baby before receiving their official birth certificate, you may still be able to obtain a passport for them. However, the process can be a bit more complicated, and you'll need to provide additional documentation.
Required Documents
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship: Since your baby's birth certificate hasn't arrived yet, you'll need to submit other evidence of their U.S. citizenship. This can include:
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad (if your child was born outside the U.S.)
- Certification of Birth from the hospital or attending medical personnel
- Parental Identification: You'll need to provide your own valid, government-issued ID (such as a driver's license or passport) as proof of your relationship to the child.
- Passport Photos: Two recent passport photos of your baby, taken within the last six months, meeting all the requirements for passport photos.
- Passport Application: Completed DS-11 form (Application for a U.S. Passport).
- Fees: Payment for the applicable passport fees, which can be found on the Department of State website.
Application Process
To apply for your newborn's passport without a birth certificate, you'll need to make an appointment at a regional passport agency or authorized passport acceptance facility. Many post offices, clerks of court, and some public libraries offer passport services.
During the appointment, you'll need to present all the required documents mentioned above. The passport agent will review your documents and, if everything is in order, they'll process your application and provide instructions on when and how to pick up your baby's passport.
Timelines and Expedited Services
Processing times for passport applications can vary, but in general, routine service takes around 6-8 weeks, while expedited service (with additional fees) takes around 2-3 weeks. Given that your trip to Hawaii is in 10 days, you'll likely need to request expedited service and pay the additional fees.
It's essential to start the passport application process as soon as possible to ensure you receive your baby's passport in time for your trip. Additionally, check with the specific passport agency or acceptance facility about their processing times and any other requirements or recommendations they may have.
With proper planning and documentation, it is possible to obtain a passport for your newborn even before their birth certificate arrives, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free international travel experience with your little one.
Josie
Does anyone know if it’s possible to get a newborn a passport if his birth certificate has not yet arrived? He’s 7 weeks old and still hasn’t received his birth certificate and we’re supposed to be going to Hawaii in 10 days
