Depending what you like to do Tokyo Kyoto isn't a bad option. I personally spend more time in Tokyo but that's because I shop(eat) + have friends there but you can hit up most of the tourist destinations in 10 days for both Tokyo and Kyoto. Just consider flight time you lose a lot of time from just flying. I'm heading to Tokyo Kyoto end of month myself but only spending 2 days in Kyoto. if you decide to fit in more Osaka is pretty close to Kyoto as well. Suggesting getting a JR pass for the latter half of traveling out of Tokyo + if you take a train/bus to airport it makes up the cost and equates to cheaper than buying each ticket individually.

I second Japan unless extreme humidity is not your friend b/c it be HAWT!
Natalie
I second the extreme humidity and HAWT it's like that all over Asia rn 5seconds out you're sweating
Caroline
I don't know if I'd recommend Japan for that period, if it's your first time there. Humidity is indeed terrible and it's the beginning of typhoon season, which could be a bother if you only have a few days there and there's a typhoon during one of those.

Costa Rica or Iceland would be my picks

Think about Greece's islands. There are so many!! For Eastern Europe I would suggest North-western and North-eastern Romania (Transylvania and Bucovina)

The Ultimate 10-Day Travel Itinerary: Japan
If you have 10 days to spare and are looking for an unforgettable travel experience, Japan should be at the top of your list. From the bustling metropolis of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto, Japan offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition that will leave you in awe.
Day 1-3: Tokyo
Start your journey in Tokyo, the vibrant capital of Japan. Spend a day exploring the iconic Sensoji Temple in Asakusa and the stunning Imperial Palace grounds. Don't miss the chance to experience the organized chaos of the Shibuya Crossing and indulge in some delicious sushi at the world-famous Tsukiji Fish Market. On another day, venture out to the quirky neighborhoods of Harajuku and Akihabara to immerse yourself in the city's trendy youth culture and electronics district.
Day 4-6: Kyoto
After soaking in the energy of Tokyo, head to the cultural heart of Japan, Kyoto. This ancient city is home to countless temples, shrines, and gardens that will transport you back in time. Start your exploration at the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha, known for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that wind through the forests. Spend a day wandering through the serene Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and the breathtaking Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion). Don't forget to experience a traditional tea ceremony and indulge in the exquisite kaiseki cuisine.
Day 7-9: Hiroshima and Miyajima
No trip to Japan is complete without visiting Hiroshima, a city that has risen from the ashes of World War II with resilience and hope. Pay your respects at the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, and take a ferry to the picturesque Miyajima Island, home to the iconic floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine. Spend a day hiking the trails of Mount Misen for stunning views of the island and the Seto Inland Sea.
Day 10: Tokyo (Departure)
On your final day, head back to Tokyo and enjoy any remaining sights or activities you may have missed. Indulge in some last-minute shopping for souvenirs or treat yourself to a traditional Japanese hot spring experience before your departure.
This 10-day itinerary offers a perfect balance of urban exploration, cultural immersion, and natural beauty, allowing you to experience the true essence of Japan. With its efficient public transportation system and friendly locals, Japan is an ideal destination for a 10-day adventure. So, pack your bags and get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey through the Land of the Rising Sun.

What's the best 10-day itinerary destination(s) you've ever done? Have Aug 28-Sep 7 booked for vacation and trying to decide where to go--thought about eastern europe (Croatia, Slovenia, Budapest), Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto), or South America (Santiago, Easter Island). Would love input from someone who's done a similar trip length. Already done most of western europe so looking to avoid there. Thanks guys!
