Where is the Best Tropical Winter Destination for a Senior Couple?

Question:

Profile picture of Elizabet

Elizabet

Senior couple looking for a winter holiday destination for a couple of weeks? What is the most beautiful tropical spot you have visited. We would like beach front but like to have points of interest, historical or scenic when we get tired of sitting on the beach. Love to be close to shopping and restaurants as well. Not interested in Florida, and went to Hawaii last winter

Highly recommend Mauritius or if that flight is too long, Ponta Delgada Azores

Elizabet

Portugal is on our bucket list for a spring or fall trip.

Profile picture of Sharon

Sharon

You'll love it!! If you can handle the flight, Mauritius is absolutely incredible. People, weather, shopping, food, beaches, and you can see the entire island at a nice leisurely pace in 7-10 days if you make day trips every other day or so. Some of the most beautiful waterfalls we've ever seen. We're seniors as well.

Sharon sounds incredible, would love it but we were in Europe for a month in May and are planning a Baltic cruise this year so looking for something this side of the Atlantic.

Antigua has the most beautiful beaches. 365 of them as a matter of fact
Can’t wait to go back. St. John has a cruise ship area for shopping. We loved it there so much and can’t wait to go back.

I’d appreciate suggestions: my cruise stops there for a day in December.

We loved Antigua . Stayed in a condo and rented a car for 10 days. Checked out lots of beaches and it has some historical places too to visit

Profile picture of Elizabet

Elizabet

Linda we stopped a day there on a cruise as well.

Profile picture of Linda

Linda

Elizabet Did you take a shore excursion or make your own? We are all avid swimmers, so a beach close to the ship would be great.

Profile picture of Elizabet

Elizabet

Linda I cant quite remember just now I know we took a local one with several others on one island. The only problem is if you run into problems with a local tour , accident, break down and are late coming back to the ship they wont wait for you. You dont want to be the person running down the dock as the gangway is being raised and hundreds of fellow travellers watching you from their balconys. If an excursion arranged by the ship runs into difficulties they will not sail without you.

Profile picture of Linda

Linda

Which is why we're going with their shore excursion to places like Rome and the Alhambra!
Friends of mine went to Alaska a few years ago and literally missed the boat. They had to find a hotel room and arrange for a charter flight to the next stop: it's become a big joke amongst our travelling crowd.

Profile picture of Elizabet

Elizabet

Linda Rome is very easy to get around, we were there in May and stayed just a block from the Vatican. We walked to all the major sites in about 4 hours. We had been there years ago but recognized the area and with the aide of a map had one of the best days of our trip. Anything outside the city centre I would use alternative transportation, the taxi drivers there are insane so be well insured and have nerves of steel.

Don’t write Cuba off your list just yet. The food on the resorts is sometimes blah for sure, but if you eat OFF the resort & immerse yourself in the culture its amazing.
And if you want tours you should call cubaoutings.com. We’ve used them twice & loved them both times!

Costa rica has beautiful beaches, rainforest, interesting wildlife, volcanoes and isn’t an unreasonable flight for a two week trip. My favourite beaches in the world would be in Australia or Thailand, but I’d suggest taking a month there. I like walking for an hour along an empty beach, not fighting for a spot to sit in a crowd, being annoyed by vendors trying to sell me trinkets.

We were there several years ago and stayed in the West Bay area. Beach was beautiful, you could walk in the water to go snorkel or hop in a cab for a tour of the island. Movie night was held at one of the bars along the beach and you could have dinner and a movie with your feet in the sand! Food was good at lots of the restaurants and it’s easy to get to

FYI, sometimes that tropical climate comes with a whole lot of rain. We tend to migrate toward drier climes and are somewhat careful on the time of year we travel to avoid hurricanes.
we are in our mid-60's and continue to explore different communities and cultures. we LOVE the Pacific side of Mexico, with our favourite community being Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo. We prefer to stay in Zihua because it's a real Mexican working city. Ixtapa was constructed and continues to operate under an arm of the Mexican Federal Government (Fonatur). It's very pretty, much less expensive and lots to do within easy walking distance. If you get bored, catch the bus to Centro Zihua. If you go in January, there is a new Blues Festival in Ixtapa; in early March there is an international guitar festival (10 days of awesome!). You will never run out of things to do in this area, from renting bikes, to guided tours.
if you are truly a beach person, check out Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (Majestic Colonial or Majestic Elegance Resorts are nice). by far and away the nicest (safe) beach for all ages.
Playa del Coco (Costa Rica) is a cute little community, very walkable, with lots of tourist facilities. As it's a drier part of Costa, it's not what i would call 'lush' and the beaches in town aren't great. Playa Hermosa, a short cab ride away, is a beautiful stretch of brown sand; not as much for beachfront though.
I've blogged about most of our holidays, in case you want to know a bit more about them. We are headed to Colombia this year!

West side Costa Rica. Jaco is beautiful water front, great restaurants and you can drive to many local attractions. Tours can be booked easily and lots of apartments to rent. Nice little farmers market. Jaco is right in front of the jungle so you can swim and see sloths without going anywhere.

Discovering the Vibrant Beauty of Sanur, Bali

For a senior couple seeking a tropical winter getaway, the charming coastal town of Sanur in Bali, Indonesia, is an absolute gem that ticks all the boxes. With its pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, and a wealth of dining and shopping options, Sanur offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Beachfront Bliss

Sanur boasts a stunning five-kilometer stretch of golden sandy beach, fringed by swaying palm trees and crystal-clear waters. The gentle waves make it an ideal spot for swimming, sunbathing, and leisurely strolls along the shoreline. The beach is well-maintained and offers plenty of beachfront resorts and restaurants, ensuring that you never have to venture too far from the ocean's embrace.

Cultural Immersion

While the beach is undoubtedly the star attraction, Sanur also offers a rich tapestry of cultural experiences. The Bali Museum, located in the heart of the town, is a must-visit for those interested in the island's history and traditions. Here, you can explore a vast collection of ancient artifacts, traditional textiles, and intricate wood carvings.

Additionally, the nearby village of Mas is renowned for its skilled woodcarvers, where you can witness the artisans at work and even purchase unique souvenirs to take home.

Scenic Splendor

For a change of scenery, consider venturing to the picturesque Gili Islands, a trio of idyllic islands just off the coast of Bali. These islands offer a tranquil escape, with pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life, perfect for snorkeling or diving adventures.

Closer to Sanur, the Campuhan Ridge Walk is a breathtaking hiking trail that winds through lush green valleys and offers panoramic views of the island's volcanic landscapes and rice terraces.

Culinary Delights and Shopping

Sanur is a food lover's paradise, with an array of restaurants serving up authentic Balinese cuisine as well as international flavors. The bustling night market, known as "Pasar Malam Sanur," is a must-visit for both budget-conscious travelers and foodies alike, offering a diverse selection of street food stalls and local handicrafts.

For those seeking a more upscale shopping experience, the Sindhu Beach area is home to numerous boutiques, art galleries, and handicraft shops, where you can find exquisite souvenirs and locally made products.

With its idyllic beaches, rich cultural heritage, scenic beauty, and abundance of dining and shopping options, Sanur promises to be a truly memorable tropical destination for your winter getaway.
