I recommend staying in a traditional inn in Kyoto instead of a hotel

2 days Hakone...we just got back and loved it there...so much to see and do. The outdoor art gallery and venetian glass museum are must sees.
Karan
Ahhh awesome!!
I was thinking of the same -one day getting to hakone, and the next day for the outdoor art gallery, glass museum, and these multi-beverage onsen (e.g. coffee / green tea / wine)
Whereabouts did you stay in Hakone? Any recommendations - food etc?

First time to Japan, I did 6 nights Tokyo, 3 nights Kyoto and 1 night Hakone - it felt a bit rushed.
Not sure on your budget but we did airbnb/hostel but splurged in Hakone for the ryokan and absolutely loved this place - food was absolutely amazing. Ryokan was booked in japican - Yoshiike Ryokan - the hot springs were incredible.
and we got in early so did the train/cable car (about an hour) and actually got to see Fuji.
Try the Ulmon Tokyo app - I was able to plot all the places I wanted to see/eat at, and it made it a lot easier to plan days. There is so much in Tokyo you can just wander different areas each day.
SO much delicious Ramen - i highly recommend Ichiran - you eat in your own little cubby and you just see hands taking your order and putting your food out then closing the curtain so you can just enjoy the deliciousness!

Has anyone been to Naoshima, the "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea? Trying to decide between this or staying one night in Mt. Koya. We're going in July. THANKS
Monica
Yes, I went last October for the triennale - it is amazing if you're an art lover. Highly reco! I did a day trip since I was with my mum and sister, but if you have the opp to stay the night, you can tour the neighbouring islands.

There is a Japanese friendship
Society where a local takes u on a walk. Did this in 2005. Did this in Hiroshima. Fab!

You need to add Kyoto a must see city!

Japan Itinerary Recommendations
Japan Itinerary Recommendations
Hey there! Thanks for reaching out about your upcoming trip to Japan. Your itinerary looks great, but here are a few suggestions to make the most of your 2 weeks:
Tokyo (4 days)
Tokyo is a vast metropolis with so much to offer. Four days is a decent amount of time, but you may want to consider adding an extra day or two if you can. Some must-see attractions include:
- Sensoji Temple and Asakusa area
- Imperial Palace and East Gardens
- Shibuya Crossing and Harajuku
- Tsukiji Fish Market (if it's still open during your visit)
- Day trip to Nikko or Kamakura
Kanazawa (2 days)
Kanazawa is a charming city known for its well-preserved samurai districts and beautiful gardens. Two days should be sufficient to explore the highlights, such as:
- Kenrokuen Garden
- Nagamachi Samurai District
- 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
Takayama (1 day)
Takayama is a lovely traditional town, but one day might be a bit tight. If possible, consider adding an extra day or skipping it altogether and spending more time in Kanazawa or Kyoto.
Kyoto (3 days)
Kyoto is a cultural hub with countless temples, shrines, and historical sites. Three days is a decent amount of time, but you may want to consider adding an extra day or two if you can. Some top attractions include:
- Fushimi Inari Shrine
- Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion)
- Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
- Nijo Castle
- Gion District
Hiroshima (1 day) and Miyajima (1 day)
Hiroshima and Miyajima are both important destinations, and one day each should be sufficient to see the main sights:
- Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum
- Miyajima's famous "floating" torii gate and Mount Misen
Osaka (2 days)
Osaka is a vibrant city known for its delicious street food and lively atmosphere. Two days should be enough to explore the highlights, such as:
- Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi areas
- Osaka Castle
- Umeda Sky Building
- Kuromon Ichiba Market
Overall, your itinerary looks well-balanced and covers some of Japan's most iconic
