Good morning! My wife and I are looking into traveling in April with our (then) 16 month old daughter. We're considering Japan, Maui or Kauai. Or, anywhere else that is Zika free. I'm looking for tips, suggestions or feedback regarding traveling with a young one. And/or suggestions for other destinations. Previously, we've travelled without baby to Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Mexico, and Maui. Thanks for any info!

Japan is easily my most favourite place that I've visited, but it's not a place to just relax while on vacation. If you're looking to unwind, Maui or Kauai is a better choice. Kauai is more laid-back with great hiking, Maui is more lively with more restaurants and shopping, yet still amazing scenery. The road to Hana is awesome. You'll have fun with any of the choices.

I think Kaui may be too remote...we go to Maui with our toddler and that works well. I've been to Japan in the past and loved it but it may be a culture shock with an infant. Unless you speak Japanese, there is not much English so can be hard to find your way around. Also I found the food very difficult for my Western palette

I think Hawaii will be perfect vacation!
Japan might be challenging with toddler if you don't speak Japanese and some places hard to bring stroller with you..
Have a good holiday

We have travelled to the US, China, Peru, Australia, Korea, and Vietnam with our 2.5 y/o starting when he was 10 months old. We find one of the biggest changes pre vs post baby travel is we like to pick one town to base out of per trip with baby. Makes it way easier to settle, adapt, nap etc. you also need to figure out how you'll manage local transportation. I'd suggest Japan, everywhere in Asia has been amazingly welcoming with a little one.

I've heard that Hawaii isn't Zika free...but Hawaii is gorgeous
. We travelled to Vanuatu/Fiji/New Zealand when our daughter was 7 1/2 weeks old (we were gone for 2 months) and she did amazing. April in the South Pacific is awesome

Kauai is pretty great for small kids. We've stayed in Poipu and there was a sheltered area for swimming. Tons of sea life that my toddler still remembers. We have traveled a lot with our now 6 year old and toddler was the hardest for the actual travel part for us so direct flights to/from Hawaii was easy. Small island so you can explore most of it in pretty quick day trips.

Kauai, 100%. Our daughter was 3 so a bit older, but it was the perfect first trip as parents for semi-adventurous travellers pre baby. Our daughter still asks a year and a half later when we're going back!

I was in Japan recently and I think you would have a fabulous trip. The language barrier is not a big deal. Lots of English signage.

Tips for Traveling with a Young Child

Traveling with a 16-month-old can be both exciting and challenging. Here are some tips to help make your trip smoother and more enjoyable:

Destination Considerations

  • Japan: Japan is a fantastic destination for families, with a rich culture, delicious cuisine, and efficient transportation. However, keep in mind that long flights and jet lag can be challenging with a young child.
  • Maui or Kauai: These Hawaiian islands are stunning and offer a more relaxed pace, with plenty of outdoor activities and beautiful beaches. The relatively short flight from the mainland US is also a plus with a baby.
  • Zika-free destinations: Since you mentioned concerns about Zika, it's wise to avoid areas with active Zika virus transmission. Some other Zika-free options to consider include New Zealand, Australia, and many parts of Europe.

Travel Preparations

  1. Pack wisely: Make a comprehensive list of essentials, including diapers, wipes, formula/snacks, toys, and a portable crib or travel bed. Pack extra supplies in case of delays or emergencies.
  2. Book family-friendly accommodations: Look for hotels or vacation rentals with amenities like cribs, high chairs, and kid-friendly pools or play areas.
  3. Obtain necessary travel documents: Ensure your child has a valid passport and any required visas or vaccinations for your destination.
  4. Plan for in-transit entertainment: Bring books, toys, and age-appropriate activities to keep your little one occupied during flights or long car rides.

On the Road

  • Maintain familiar routines: Try to stick to your child's regular sleep and feeding schedules as much as possible to minimize disruptions.
  • Adjust expectations: Be prepared for unexpected delays, meltdowns, and the need to take breaks more frequently. Embrace flexibility and go with the flow.
  • Baby-proof your accommodations: Upon arrival, take a few minutes to secure any potential hazards, such as covering electrical outlets and securing loose cords or furniture.
  • Seek family-friendly activities: Look for child-friendly attractions, parks, and restaurants that cater to families with young children.

Traveling with a young child can be a rewarding experience, allowing you to create lasting memories as a family. With proper planning and a positive attitude, you can navigate the challenges and embrace the adventure.
