We made the same trip in April of this year. We researched bus options but in the end decided on the water taxi from Chetumal to Ambergris Caye. This post explains the process quite accurately and we found the whole trip to be fairly pleasant.

Several years back we researched the same (opposite direction) and opted for the water taxi.

I did the reverse trip from Belize City to Cancún. It was pretty straightforward but it was in 2013 and I don't remember it super well. I think we switched buses at the border but same ticket.

Super easy and straightforward. You can take a water taxi right from Chetumal to Caye Caulker to skip the land border.

Bus Tips

When traveling by bus from Cancun to Belize, it's important to pack light and bring snacks and water for the journey. The buses can be crowded and may not have amenities like air conditioning, so be prepared for a potentially uncomfortable ride. It's also a good idea to bring a book or some entertainment to pass the time.

Border Crossing

When crossing the border from Mexico to Belize, be prepared for a potentially long wait. Make sure to have all necessary documents, including your passport and any visas, ready for inspection. It's also a good idea to have some cash on hand for any border fees that may be required.

Ferry to Ambergris Caye
