Are foreign visitors really required to pay the tourist tax in Cancun?

Question:

Has anyone been to Cancun recently and paid the tourist tax? In the state of Quintana Roo there is the VisiTax which all foreign visitors are mandated to pay, just wondering if this is legit, is it enforced or just another scam by sharks at their airport?! Is it something new?

Is this for just Cancun or all over Mexico? My family is going to Puerto Vallarta in February. There’s 9 of us, I want to be prepared

Mexico is becoming quite expensive and comparable to prices in Europe now. The only convenience is the short flights.

Also, note they have begun enforcing the rules around laptops and tablets. Phones don’t count but if you bring a tablet and a laptop you may have to pay.

I know! I heard about it on the news. If there’s a few of you going, you may be ok to spread the devices across people.

Don’t bring more than one device per person. They have a new tax on second devices per person. I know someone who got nailed $250 for her Apple computer because she also had her cell phone.

I've been to Cancun probably 10 times... don't pay it. No one will ask. It's a money grab

In my past visits, the resort requests it at either check in or check out. No big deal.

It is legit but they never asked for it when we were down there in May.

I've heard that they never ask for proof that you paid

Packages ( like westjet, air canada and sunwing) have it included in their package. However if you fly there on your own you should prepay it… it’s roulette, you may get chosen or may not.

Tanya actually just bought package with sun wing and I had the option to pay upfront which I did

100% legitimate. Some airlines include it in their ticket price.

I was there last month, it’s legit and attached to your passport, so when it’s scanned they can see that it has been paid. If it hasn’t been paid they can deny you entry.
You can do it online before you leave.

I seem to remember something about that from the last few years.

We paid it in April of 2024 and requested it back and it was returned

Vivianmay I ask why?

Tammy I have no idea. The gal I was travelling with asked for a credit just before we left Cancun. I figured I had nothing to lose by asking and got mine back too. No one ever asked to see if we paid it either.

I paid prior to leaving but was never checked but I have heard it can be random and sometimes travelers can get hassled for not paying.

A simple google search and after looking through reddit and refutable sites it’s legit.. I’m heading to Cancun in November.

Kept my proof for the airport. It was not a lot and really no hassle.

Heads up: If you do decide to pay this, the official website is :https://www.visitax.gob.mx/sitio/ There are many unofficial sites that range from scam to overpaying. I've deleted a few of the ones mentioned by people that are not the official one.

Is the VisiTax in Cancun Legit?

Recently, there have been reports of a new tourist tax in Cancun, specifically in the state of Quintana Roo, called the VisiTax. This tax is reportedly mandated for all foreign visitors to pay upon arrival in the airport. Many travelers are questioning the legitimacy of this tax and whether it is just another scam by opportunistic individuals.

It is important to note that as of now, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that the VisiTax is a scam. However, it is always wise to exercise caution when encountering new fees or taxes while traveling. It is recommended to do thorough research and confirm with official sources before paying any additional fees.

It is unclear whether the VisiTax is something new or if it has been in place for some time. Some travelers have reported paying the tax without issue, while others have raised concerns about its legitimacy. As with any new tax or fee, it is always best to err on the side of caution and verify the information before making any payments.

If you have recently visited Cancun and paid the VisiTax, we would love to hear about your experience. Please share your thoughts and any insights you may have on this new tax in the comments below.
