Asking a simple question, thank you! Are beaches in Maui mostly open to public or with the hotel only? If we stay in Wilea and go to beaches in Kihei?

There are no private beaches on Maui, all are open to the public, even in front of the hotels.

The beaches are public. Definitely check out the Makena area...big beach, secret cove and little beach (nude tho, but the best for swimming, no crazy break).

All beaches in Maui are public, no matter where they are. Go down to Kaanapali, great long beach and snorkeling. Aloha

All beaches in Hawaii are public. They even have to allow you access to parking and a bathroom. Go find the best hotels and hang out!

There are no closed beaches to public in Hawaii unless the state closes it due to dangerous conditions.

In fact, in most of the countrys we have been to, all beaches are public up to the high tide mark. I'm sure though, there are exceptions. But in Hawaii, resorts are obliged to provide access to the public to the beach in front of their resort, and in most cases, parking too. As Karen said, they typically only close beaches for safety reasons. Big beach on Maui is great. Here's a picture of Wikiki CLOSED.

If you like nature, make sure you get out into some of the forest area's, IAO Valley, hills above Kapalua, if you're brave the road to Hana, etc.

Beach Access in Maui: Public or Hotel-Exclusive?

If you're planning a trip to the beautiful island of Maui, one of the most common questions you might have is whether the beaches are open to the public or restricted to hotel guests only. Especially if you're staying in the Wailea or Kihei areas, it's important to understand the beach access rules to make the most of your Hawaiian vacation.

Public Beaches in Maui

The good news is that most beaches in Maui are public and open to everyone, regardless of where you're staying. This is thanks to the Hawaiian Beach Access Law, which ensures that all beaches are considered public property up to the highest wash of the waves.

This means that even if you're staying at a hotel or resort that has a beachfront, you are legally allowed to access and enjoy that beach. However, it's important to note that while the beach itself is public, any amenities or facilities provided by the hotel, such as beach chairs, umbrellas, or towel services, may be reserved for hotel guests only.

Beaches in Wailea and Kihei

If you're staying in Wailea or Kihei, you'll have access to some of the most beautiful and well-maintained beaches on the island. Here are a few notable public beaches in these areas:

  • Kamaole Beach Parks: This series of three beach parks (Kamaole I, II, and III) in Kihei are popular for their golden sand, clear waters, and ample facilities like showers and restrooms.
  • Keawakapu Beach: Located in Wailea, this beach is known for its soft white sand and calm waters, making it a great spot for families and swimmers.
  • Ulua Beach: Also in Wailea, Ulua Beach is a smaller, more secluded beach that offers excellent snorkeling opportunities.

Hotel Beach Access

While most beaches in Maui are public, some hotels and resorts may have private beach areas or sections that are reserved exclusively for their guests. These areas are usually clearly marked, and you may be asked to show your hotel key or wristband to gain access.

However, even if a hotel has a private beach area, they are still required to provide public access to the shoreline. This means you can walk along the beach and access the water, but you may not be able to use the hotel's beach amenities or facilities.

Respect and Etiquette

Regardless of whether you're visiting a public or hotel beach, it's important to respect the local culture and environment. Follow any posted rules and regulations, and be mindful of your impact on the natural surroundings. Remember to leave no trace, and be considerate of other beachgoers.

With its stunning beaches, warm waters, and lush landscapes, Maui is a truly magical destination. By understanding the beach access rules and guidelines, you can make the most of your time on this beautiful island paradise.
