Can you trust the quality and safety of dental work in Mexico?

Question:

Profile picture of Kirk

Has anyone on here gotten good dental work done in Mexico?
I have a friend who was quoted about $30,000 for dental work in Canada. However I know that it can be less expensive in Mexico, and still could be good quality and safe.
Suggestions?

A lot of dentists close to the border are actually American. The trouble can come in lab work not being comparable -ie caps, bridges of poorer quality. I have friends who have had to have work redone as a result. Same with prescription glasses.

Profile picture of Lindsay

Lindsay

Just do your research please. I'm a dental assistant here and the really crappy work we end up fixing is crazy. They may be American trained but they don't have a regulatory body supervising their practice. I've heard horror stories about how they do their sterilization. If any of that treatment is of a surgical sort i would highly suggest you avoid it. That's not to say there aren't good ones. Just really do your research.

true but they are regulated and audited to make sure they are following infection control standards. If they are terrible here they don't last very long.

We’ve been many times.
Kirk is from Canada (BC)
He went there on a holiday and fell in love and moved there and started a practice. They are great (see reviews)

Profile picture of Kevin

I would do lot of research before you head down..... I have heard and seen night mares where work is done down in Mexico spend however much down there and come back up and spend even more then what was originally told because the dentists have had to go and fix what they had got done.....

Profile picture of Kirk

Kirk

Kevin hence.... THIS is my research..... so do you have specific examples so I know what dentist to avoid? Or is this like everything else in the world that there's some Horror Story attached to something?

Profile picture of Kevin

I don’t know if any reliable ones just the horror story ones but not the names I can find that out easily enough though. But there was a comment about a Canadian dentist working down in Mexico from bc I would be inclined to say that dentist would be a decent dentist to go too.

Profile picture of Marie

There are plenty of amazing dentists in Mexico! Do your research (of course) and don't let anyone scare you. I have heard of Canadian and American dentists working in Mexico, often in resort cities. I get my work done in Mexico City but it isn't exactly a vacation spot but it's a gret city with many highly trained dentists that cater to the expat community.

Profile picture of Melanie

She should also consider getting a quote from a dentist outside alberta as they do not necessarily follow the same fee guidelines. In BC the dentists have to follow those guidelines

Profile picture of Lanachka

Kirk you get what you pay for

Profile picture of Kirk

Kirk

Lanachka I can appreciate the idea behind that... However paying a dentist in Mexico $6,000, or paying a Canadian dentist $30,000. I'm sure there are a lot of Canadians who have good reviews about Mexican dentists. And that's specifically what we are looking for. I'm not going to Google, I'm not going to look on craigslist, I'm looking for people who actually have gone down and had good experiences. Hence my post. I know at least 7 people who have had breast augmentations in Mexico from one specific dr. They Rave about him and the work. And it was cheaper than the work in Canada. On top of that, they got to have a tropical destination trip.

Profile picture of Lanachka

Prices are outrageous here you have to actually take mortgage to pay it if you need a lot of dental work. Not mexico, but know a tonne of people who go to europe and do their dental work there. Super high quality, AND at a fraction of the price. In some mexican destination ex (puerto vallarta, bucerias) you see lots of canadian dr too. Of course out of many many patients some will have further problems. Do your research and dont let negativity influence you. There are great doctors everywhere

The only advise I will offer is to ensure the Dentist you want to see is properly accredited. Doing research for myself I found that in MX a "general" dentist can do orthodontics, implants etc without any special training if they choose. Many are well trained, but you have to ensure that the one you are choosing is specifically trained and certified in the area you need. Having said that, the surgeon I ended up with to remove an "unplanned"split molar was fabulous. The Dentist that I researched and came very well reputed was good, but def used very little anesthetic for a filling. I would also inquire about sterilization techniques as they seem to vary at different offices.

I work in dental. And I would say be very very careful! We have had many patient who had horrible dental work done in Mexico that had to be replaced. Most recently we had a patient who had implants placed and now has facial pain and paralysis. We often hear it was a dentist from the USA. My question to them is why is your dentist practicing in Mexico rather than the USA where he/she would make more money. Not weather because there's lots of warm places in the US. Most often it is because they are NOT allowed to practice in the USA. The other thing you should be aware of is they don't have the same sterilization rules and you have absolutely no way to go after the dentist if you are left with bad work or given a disease from the sterilization practices . As my Momma used to say you get what you pay for.just food for thought

Profile picture of Nico

Nico

This!!!!!!! Yes and yes! Sterilization practices are poor in Mexico. Not the same standard as here.

Profile picture of Marie

Marie

Nico le M Do you really think Mexicans don't have standards? I would think Mexicans would all be walking around with gaping holes and infections in their mouths, the way Canadian dentists and hygienists describe it. There are terrible dentists there, as there are here. There are also fantastic ones. You absolutely DO get what you pay for. There are a wide range of fees and services offered in Mexico. It is not a backward shit show like you think it is.

Profile picture of Nicole

Nicole

Marie Amaro my daughter lived and taught English in Mexico for 4 years and we still have many friends there. I am very aware there are some good and even great dentists in Mexico. But the truth is you can get the best of the best or the worst of the worst! In Canada patient's are protected and have rights if the practitioner does poor work or worse gives you some disease. This does not exist in Mexico. You assumed I thought it was a backward shit show. Not true. But we see a ton of crap that comes out of Mexico. You talk about a range of services. Here in Canada we have a standard that MUST be followed we dont offer the best and the worst like Mexico does. Again you get what you pay for if this person is expecting Canadian standards but is looking for cheap services they WILL get what they pay for.

Profile picture of Marie

Marie

Nicole thats cool that your daughter lived in Mexico. I am hope she had a great experience. I live in Mexico as well and I am married to a Mexican.
In Mexico, if you receive poor dental service, you can complain to CONAMED (National Medical Arbitration Commission) or PROFECO (Office of the Federal Prosecutor for the Consumer). There are laws in place to protect consumers and patients in Mexico.
I am going to do more research into this so I can spread the word and inform Canadians about their rights in Mexico as dental patients so they can be more comfortable when they travel down to get their work done.

As a dental professional, I can tell you that you get what you pay for. Cheaper is NOT better. Mexico uses different dental materials that are not as high quality as Canada and USA. My office has had several patients get crowns and implants done in Mexico, and the crowns have broken and implants failed. They end up investing more money here to get it done properly. So essentially you lose all the money you spent in Mexico. Most offices have payment options and financing available. I wouldn't recommend Mexico for any major dental work.

This was implants done in Mexico. Punctured the sinus has hit the nerves and used general hardware screws not sterile titanium implants. I had an implant done in Mazatlan Mexico and the work was first class. The work was to fix some work done in Calgary that failed. The implant post is purchased from the United States. I also had a bridge installed to replace one from here that failed. The total cost was about 25% of what it would cost here. My dentist speaks perfect english and like everyone else in Mexico, likes to communicate with whatsapp. I can consult with him from here, make an appointment plan to coincide with my time in Mexico. A few years ago, I needed an implant and the quote in Calgary was around $5500. I got a quote from Dr. Macias at Dental Express......and with 2 airfares, the cost was still half of what it would cost in Calgary.
Dr. Macias speaks perfect English......and has studied in Mexico - and Texas.
This clinic will also help you with travel arrangements and transportation from Guadalajara International Airport......and the clinic is very clean.

The village is not a tourist destination. Lots of US & Canadian snowbirds during winter months......and a good population of year-round expats. This means you can find lots of good restaurants at very reasonable prices.....and village is large enough to have a cinema & WalMart too.

My aunt and cousin and husband see a dentist in Puerta Vallarta or Bucerias Mexico who is a Canadian and did schooling in Canada and moved his family down there. They pay a fraction of what they would here and get a nice vacation too each time they go. They swear by it! Plus I’ve heard benefits don’t mind paying for out of country care (probably some stipulations you should look into) because it’s less expensive- so it could still be covered if you have coverage here.

Is/are the medical expenses paid in Mexico tax deductible with revenue Canada? Anything over 3% of your gross wage for a 12 month period is tax deductible in Canada including expenses incurred with travel, food, lodging, prescriptions, glasses, etc. So if work needs to be done, best to do within a 12 month period, but perhaps check with your chartered accountant to see if out of country expenses are similarly tax deductible, oh and skip the H&R or attempting to do your own taxes if/when you decide as it can be a headache

Profile picture of Jim

Jim

Brenda Agar thank you as I wasn't sure. I know when I had my eyes lasered at Gimbles a few years ago, my gas, hotel and meal at Peters drive-inn was all tax deductible along with other medical claims but for only a 12 month calendar period so pushed to include dental, prescriptions, etc. so as maximize my return which was around $3800 for medical expenses which typically I'd never qualify nor claim having less then a 3% total of my gross wage, but it's a legit claim most fail to adhere or include within ones taxes typically as most are unaware this benefit/claim is available

Profile picture of Jim

Jim

Brenda Agar yes I do, but missing a day of work for medical expenses are tax deductible, requiring a person to drive you to an appointment and feeding them is tax deductible, the fee you pay to have an accountant do your taxes to claim these expenses is tax deductible the next calendar year. Not a biggy, these expenses are legitimate claims, simply most are unaware and fail to benefit as such. Not like revenue Canada is going to reimburse or return your maximum benefit should one fail to know Canada Revenue Act.

Profile picture of Jim

Jim

Brenda Agar exactly Brenda, simply most using H&R or trying to save a buck by using quick tax or another online company never know, will they know benefits entitled but not heralded upon their behave

Profile picture of Lisa

Lisa

Brenda Agar I didn't know this! I go to a neurologist every 3 months and it's a 2 hour drive! I need to start saving my receipts! Thanks. This is included in the 3% of wages part though right?

Profile picture of Jim

Jim

Lisa Cockshutt yes, and the claim period is for a 12 month date, i.e. March to Febuary, etc. prescriptions, gas, expenses, dental, glasses, etc. should try to be done or completed within this timeframe. Easiest to figure is anything over 3% of your gross wage is tax deductible regarding medical expenses and again I'd recommend chatting with your accountant and they can advise yourself on keeping which receipts so as to maximize your return.

I recommend my dentist in Turkey for dental work. She’s got amazing reviews and I’ve recently gotten a tooth extracted, root canal, and today going for two fillings + crown - for a total price of 300USD.

I have rental properties in Costa Rica and we host a lot of people
Who come for dental work. We have a fantastic dentist in our town and yes the prices are so much cheaper than Canada but absolutely does not represent a reduction in ability/technology or education. Message me if interested.

I am Mexican, I know the best people in Guadalajara. I have done all my dental work with them, super clean, extremely professionals, and it is a clinic where the whole family have worked together for generations. They do it all. My Canadian husband is very please with them.

I had 6 crowns done on my front teeth last year in La Peñita, Nayarit (90 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta). They are gorgeous, my periodontist back in Calgary was very impressed with the work done. Six crowns cost me a total of $1,082 CDN, including a night guard. I went to Dr. Abraham López Sánchez at Abraham's Dental Clinic and I recommend him very highly. Dr. Abraham speaks reasonable English but his wife Consuelo (who runs his practice) is fluent. [email protected]

My travel insurance company dealt with someone recently that had wood screws drilled into their jaw at a dentist office in Mexico. Like the kind you put in a fence. Infection and severe pain ensued. And by the way not covered by travel insurance as its elective.

Maybe they should have done some research and asked question before any work was done!!

Getting Affordable Dental Work in Mexico

Dental treatments can be incredibly expensive, especially in countries like Canada and the United States. For those seeking quality dental care at a fraction of the cost, many have turned to medical tourism in Mexico. But is it safe and reliable to get dental work done south of the border?

Significant Cost Savings

One of the primary reasons people travel to Mexico for dental work is the substantial cost savings. According to several dental tourism websites, the prices for dental procedures in Mexico can be as low as 25% to 50% of what you would pay in Canada or the United States. For example, your friend was quoted $30,000 for dental work in Canada, but they could potentially save thousands of dollars by getting the same treatment done in Mexico.

Accredited Dental Clinics and Qualified Professionals

While the cost savings are certainly appealing, it's crucial to ensure that you're receiving quality care from licensed and experienced professionals. Many reputable dental clinics in popular Mexican destinations like Los Algodones, Tijuana, and Cancun are accredited by international organizations and staffed by dentists who have received their training in the United States or Canada.

Before committing to any dental clinic, thoroughly research their credentials, read patient reviews, and ensure they use modern equipment and follow strict sterilization protocols.

Potential Risks and Considerations

As with any medical tourism, there are potential risks to consider when getting dental work done in Mexico. Language barriers, unfamiliar surroundings, and the possibility of substandard care from unlicensed or unqualified practitioners are all valid concerns.

It's essential to consult with your local dentist before traveling to Mexico for dental work. They can provide valuable insights, recommendations, and ensure that the proposed treatment plan is appropriate for your specific dental needs.

Suggestions for a Successful Dental Tourism Experience

  • Research reputable dental clinics and read reviews from previous patients.
  • Consider clinics accredited by organizations like the American Dental Association (ADA) or the Joint Commission International (JCI).
  • Ask for before and after photos of the dentist's work.
  • Inquire about the dentist's qualifications, experience, and where they received their training.
  • Understand the clinic's policies regarding follow-up care and complications.
  • Purchase travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and dental work.

While getting dental work done in Mexico may seem daunting, many have had positive experiences and saved a significant amount of money. With proper research, precautions, and by choosing a reputable dental clinic, it's possible to receive high-quality dental care at an affordable cost.
