Any tips for what to check out in the San Juan del Sur area of Nicaragua? I'll only be there for a short 4 days but I wanted to check out volcano surfing and volcano hikes- are these possible day trips? ANY advice would be helpful

Cerro negro for volcano boarding is 4 hours 18 mins away from San Juan del sir...there is a active volcano in Masaya and markets there check out some pottery... could day trip to little corn island

Corn Island is a 2.5 hour drive + 1 hour flight from San Juan del Sur.

For those interested in pottery check out the town of San Juan de Oriente.

We went to masaya volcano and was awesome. It's almost 1 hour from Managua

Is it easy to get to without a car? I'm assuming they'll have lots of tour options available

We did rent a vehicle for a week and moved around and saw different cities. U will like sjds it's clean and food is awesome

Alb what kind of car did you get and from what company? We’re going in February .

Masaya Volcano is a 2 hour drive from San Juan del Sur.

We did rent Hulux 4x4 it's was beside the airport from hertz.

Stay in Laguna du opoyo for your first nigh $35 taxi from managua. Well worth it

Here are some activities in and around San Juan del Sur:
HIKE UP THE HILL TO SEE JESUS: The Christ of the Mercy statue was erected in 2009 and and has quickly become an ionic landmark and geographical reference point for the town of San Juan del Sur. At 24 meters it is the largest statue of Christ in Central America and one of the 10 largest Jesus statues in the world. Visiting hours 8 am – 5 pm. $2 USD per person.

GO HORSEBACK RIDING WITH BLUE AT RANCHO CHILAMATE: Horseback riding is a great way to get up close and personal with Nicaragua. A tour with Rancho Chilamate includes transportation to and from San Juan del Sur, western boots, hat and good tack, a photography shoot of your ride, strong healthy loved up horses, an English speaking trail boss and fun and rum, with a total of 3 hours in the saddle. SUNBATHE AND SWIM AT PLAYA MAJAGUAL: Playa Majagual is one of the most easily accessible white sand beaches in the San Juan area. Volcano boarding is in Leon, not really near San Juan del Sur. You will have to check out bus schedules or shuttle services to see if you can fit it in. Lots of fun, but you will have to factor in that travel time. You definitely could do a hiking day trip to one of the Volcanos. The surf area is pretty quiet and lots of opportunity to get a lesson or two if you want. A couple great restaurants but over all a very quaint, quiet, area. We loved it. This area is nothing like Mexico. You will not find it overrun with tourists. There is a Canadian bar or two, right on the beach to stop for a bite to eat or a beverage.
