Phoenix is about 2 hr to Sedona. Very good spot to start I think. There are a few good spots along the way to Sedona like Montezuma Castle
Cathy
Vegas. South rim is only a couple of hours drive.
Michael
Cathy almost 3 hour drive

We flew to Vegas, stayed a couple of days then rented a "Jucy" van to go the Grand Canyon camping. It was the beginning of April and VERY cold at night. -4°. The Jucy Van is an awesome way to go, but get EXTRA blankets.
Michael
It will be cold there in October

We flew into phoenix because we got a way better deal for flights, we went in September of last year and it’s cold at night...also if you are planning to stay overnight the book very fast, we had to adjust our plans in order to get a reservation

We just did an April 20-27 trip. Flew into Vegas, picked up rental and went to Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon. So it depends on flight deals and if you are going anywhere else. Tip: Book now for Grand Canyon. We stayed in the “Historic” cabins at Bright Angel Lodge right on the rim. AWESOME and affordable. Book EARLY! Room was nice - we stayed 2 nights which was ok but 3 would have been better!

The ranger told us the Fall is the nicest time , less busy time to visit, including the North Rim.

Awesome, thank you everyone for all your tips! I've written everything down and will decide based on everyone's comments. You were all a big help.

Best Airport to Fly into for Grand Canyon
If you're planning a trip to the Grand Canyon, you'll need to decide which airport to fly into. The two closest major airports are Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and McCarran International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas.
Here's a comparison of the two airports:
Airport | Distance to Grand Canyon | Flight options | Rental car options | Cost |
---|---|---|---|---|
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) | 229 miles | More flight options | More rental car options | More expensive |
McCarran International Airport (LAS) | 277 miles | Fewer flight options | Fewer rental car options | Less expensive |
Ultimately, the best airport for you to fly into will depend on your budget, travel preferences, and the availability of flights.
Tips for visiting the Grand Canyon
- Book your flights and accommodations in advance, especially if you're traveling during peak season.
- Rent a car to explore the Grand Canyon at your own pace.
- Bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
- Be prepared for crowds, especially at the most popular viewpoints.
- Take your time and enjoy the scenery.

Hello, we are looking to visit the Grand Canyon this year, possibly in October. For those of you who have gone, which airport is best to fly into? Vegas or Phoenix? Any tips?
