With free wifi in many hotels and the wonders of the internet just buy your tickets online and pick up at train station. We did that while in China and India so Europe should be much more doable.

Don't worry about a pass. More expensive than buying tickets individually. We just came back from Europe, England, Paris,Italy. We used the train everywhere. Bought our tickets at the station same day we were using them. Not quite as cheap as flying but no security lines and not 1 hour out of city. Comfortable, fast (280+ kms!), efficient. Flying is only cheap when you have no checked bags and European carry ons are smaller than North American.

Only certain countries (ie Germany) can the pass be worth it. However, purchasing individual tickets in advance (in Italy for sure) does save you a bit! But otherwise yes, it's not too bad to just hop on and go.

If you're looking at tickets go to captaintrain.com the prices are cheaper than eurail for the same. I used it when I was in Europe last year

I don't know if you can actually buy them down there. Mine was stolen while in Paris and not even the police really knew what I was talking about. Wasn't worth it really. For most of our train trips, we had to pay a booking fee of sorts. The price varied by country- some as much as 30 percent of the original cost. Paris to Milano was 85 extra per person

You can buy it in Europe. It will depend on the number of countries you want to visit and how old you are.

I believe you can only buy outside of Europe...it's not available to residents of Europe...
