Is a 5-night cruise from Kobe to Tokyo a better option for exploring Japan?

Olympics will be in Tokyo summer of 2020, I think.
Tons to see in Osaka/Kyoto area, you could easily spend a week there and just scratch the surface of all.
We went to Japan summer of 2016 and it was HOT - 35 degrees plus humidity. Drink lots of water, and have an awesome time whatever you do!

There are alot of day trips a short distance from Osaka that make staying in that region worth it. If possible I recommend staying in Kyoto instead of Osaka. Kyoto is much less expensive and has a really relaxed pace. I also highly recommend a day trip to Nara. It is a surreal experience

Just got back from Japan. Kyoto was wonderful! Will definitely go back. It is better to spend more time in one place.

Thank you all for the wonderful advice. I think I will be doing the shorter cruise to allow more time in Osaka and now from recommendations Kyoto! Our original trip did not include this.

Choosing the Perfect Japan Cruise: Tokyo vs. Kobe
Planning a trip to Japan can be an exciting yet daunting task, especially when it comes to deciding between different cruise options. Based on your question, it seems you're torn between a 7-night cruise starting and ending in Tokyo or a shorter 5-night cruise that starts in Kobe and ends in Tokyo.
The Tokyo Option
The 7-night cruise starting and ending in Tokyo has its advantages. Tokyo, being the capital and one of the most vibrant cities in Japan, offers an incredible array of cultural, historical, and culinary experiences. You'll have the opportunity to explore iconic landmarks like the Imperial Palace, Sensoji Temple, and the bustling streets of Shibuya and Shinjuku.
However, with the 7-night cruise, you'll only have one port day in each destination, which means your time on land will be limited. If you're someone who prefers to immerse yourself fully in the local culture and explore at a more leisurely pace, this option might not be ideal.
The Kobe Option
The shorter 5-night cruise starting in Kobe and ending in Tokyo offers a different perspective. Kobe, located in the Kansai region, is a charming city known for its stunning harbor, delicious Kobe beef, and traditional sake breweries. Spending a few extra days here could give you a more authentic Japanese experience, allowing you to delve deeper into the local culture and cuisine.
Additionally, with the shorter cruise duration, you'll have more time to explore Tokyo before or after the cruise. This flexibility could be advantageous if you want to experience both the bustling capital and the more laid-back atmosphere of Kobe.
Considerations
When making your decision, consider the following factors:
- Interests: If you're particularly drawn to the urban energy of Tokyo and want to experience as many iconic sights as possible, the 7-night cruise might be a better fit. However, if you prefer a more immersive cultural experience and don't mind sacrificing some time in Tokyo, the Kobe option could be more appealing.
- Pace: The shorter cruise allows for a more relaxed pace, giving you additional time to soak in the local atmosphere. The 7-night cruise, while covering more ground, may feel more rushed.
- Budget: Shorter cruises are generally more affordable, so the 5-night option could be a cost-effective choice if budget is a concern.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, both cruise options offer unique experiences and opportunities to explore different facets of Japan. If you're torn between the two, consider your travel style, interests, and budget. Whichever option you choose, Japan is sure to captivate you with its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality.

This group has been awesome for advice. We are planning to goto Japan (summer 2020) on a cruise and land combo (on our own). One option is 7 night cruise with start and end in Tokyo. Other option is a shorter cruise 5 night but start in Kobe and end in Tokyo. The advantage with the shorter cruise would be we have days we could spend in Kobe versus the single port day otherwise. All other ports are the same. Thoughts on those who have travelled to Japan and if there is more to… See more
