Agreed. Always take local currency and a bit to further exchange if need be but bank machines are great too if you need more

We always take pesos (put your excess pesos in your room safe), preorder at your bank ( I have no access to the calforex that gets mentioned, sounds great if you can!) also there are ATMs everywhere if you need to top up.

If a foreigner asked what money to use in Canada, what would you answer? Just go with the currency of the country and everyone's happy.

Change some Canadian into Pesos before you go for initial costs, and then use an ATM machine to get more pesos once you get there.

Using Currency in Mexico: Canadian, American, or Pesos?

If you're planning a trip to Mexico in October, one of the important considerations is what currency to use. Mexico's official currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN), but you may wonder if you can use Canadian or American dollars during your stay. Here's what you need to know:

Using Canadian Dollars in Mexico

While it is possible to use Canadian dollars in certain tourist areas of Mexico, it is generally not recommended. The exchange rate for Canadian dollars is often unfavorable, and you may end up paying more for goods and services than if you used Mexican pesos or even American dollars.

Using American Dollars in Mexico

American dollars are widely accepted in Mexico, especially in popular tourist destinations and border towns. Many businesses, restaurants, and hotels will gladly accept U.S. dollars, though you should expect to receive change in Mexican pesos. However, it's important to note that you'll likely get a less favorable exchange rate when paying with American dollars compared to using pesos.

Using Mexican Pesos

The most recommended option is to use Mexican pesos during your trip to Mexico. This will ensure that you get the best exchange rate and avoid any potential confusion or unfavorable rates when using foreign currency. Here are a few tips for using pesos in Mexico:

  • Exchange Currency Before Your Trip: Consider exchanging some currency for pesos before your trip to have cash on hand when you arrive.
  • Use ATMs: Once in Mexico, you can withdraw pesos from ATMs using your debit or credit card. This is often the most convenient and cost-effective way to obtain pesos.
  • Avoid Exchanging at Airports or Hotels: While convenient, these locations often offer poor exchange rates.

Do You Need Pesos in Mexico?

While American dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, it's highly recommended to have Mexican pesos on hand for your trip. Many smaller businesses, taxis, and local vendors may not accept foreign currency, or they may offer an unfavorable exchange rate. Having pesos ensures a smooth transaction and helps you avoid overpaying.

In conclusion, while you can use Canadian or American dollars in some parts of Mexico, it's best to rely primarily on Mexican pesos for your transactions during your October trip. This will help you get the best exchange rates and ensure a hassle-free experience when making purchases or paying for services.
