Don't go into the outdoor public market. It's almost like being attacked by vultures! Also...it's a good idea to find out what day the cruise ships are in port and not do any excursions on those days. Dunns River Falls is spectacular and has awesome lighting for great pics and we hired a private driver to take us to the Blue Hole. It's up the mountain in the jungle.

I totally agree with these recommendations!
The locals there are really aggressive.. and this is coming from someone who has done a fair bit of travelling.
Don’t wear obvious jewelry/carry a loose purse etc.

I also agree^^^^

Riu Ocho Rios 'All Inclusive' on waterfront has all deluxe services for perfect relaxation. There are always 'tours' to venture outside but I'd be leery in Jamaica

We hired a private van and driver for the day for $100 and he took us to float the river, up to the blue hole with a private guide, drove around the local areas, lunch at a jerk snack.... Marvins paradise tours. They are awesome

Hang on to your purse or wallet..

Just got back from Ocho Rios over Christmas. The glistening waters tour was out of this world, especially if you swim. Also, bamboo float tour down the Martha Brae River. Bring plenty of US dollars as almost every tour driver and bus driver, boat driver appreciate a tip - which is also great for the Jamaican economy. Keep your wits about you and you'll have a great time (but definitely do guided tours since driving there could be a suicide wish hahahah). Dunn River falls was beautiful...but also super huge tourist 'trap' so to speak. Depends on what you want though...we found it to be a bit lackluster after having swam through the remote falls at blue mountain....so if you're into more remote and adventure I'd recommend the Blue Mountain bike ride (it's a full day and ends with jumping through the most pristine and private waterfall I've ever seen...the bikes weren't great quality but the day out and seeing the countryside and small towns along the way was worth it!). Bring extra bags for bringing home Rum Cream - it's delicious and difficult to find in North America!

We had lunch and a tour at a plantation there and it was nice and a bit of history of the old house
