Has anyone gone to Portugal and got a local SIM card for an iPhone? Just wondering what kind of packages you can get and get some idea of cost.

We did it years ago and it worked for us (not an iPhone but an unlocked blackberry). We just got a 20 euro package with vodafone and it offered is calling and texting, no data. I suppose it depends why you need it. We had it to mainly to make emergency calls if our rented car broke down since we were traveling with kids. Other than that, my husband used up the minutes chatting with his family over there before we left haha!

I am going there in a few weeks too! I looked at my cell phone company website (fido) and they have plans where you pay a prepaid amount for international roaming, text, data and minutes. I know Rogers has it too, depending on which company you're with it may be a good option for you.

It's my teenage daughter going. She uses an excess amount of texts and data so don't think the Canadian Bell package we could get would work. I think a Vodaphone package would work. I wonder if you can get data added on?

I'm sure you could -we did the same thing before in Europe (it wasn't Portugal) where we just had an unlocked iPhone and bought a SIM card there that had a limited amount of data and when it ran out it just stopped working and you had to buy a new sim once you ran out. We were in Italy and he Netherlands and did it in both countries - in Italy we researched before we got there which cell phone company we could get a sim from and in the Netherlands they just had big signs in the airport that said like 1 GB for 20 euro or whatever the price was.

That's awesome to hear. I'm sure you can get those too but just can't really find much info on the internet about it. Have a great trip!! I'm jealous my daughter gets to go with her grandma and aunt and little cousin.

did this last year ... when "you" come out of the baggage/ customs area at the airport(assuming lisbon) take the ramp to the right ... in the right hand corner of the airport ... there is a vodaphone kiosk that sells cards accessories etc ... Last year i took an unlocked i5, got a sim for 20 Euro ... used it for 3 weeks ... some data (forGPS), a few texts and calls. Didnt need to reload it anywhere but, there were lots of locations one could have .. very simple and easy

MEO! We went to a store in a mall and got a sim card for 5 Euros for 10GB of data! Crazy good deal! When we first arrived at the Lisbon airport we got a UZO card that 10 Euros for 200MB and 10 Euros in credit from the Relay store but that ran out and then we came across a MEO and we were very happy to find this awesome deal

We checked with vodaphone but they said it would take 24 hrs before the internet would start working, whereas the MEO card activated right away.

Portugal is a beautiful country with a rich culture and stunning landscapes, making it a popular destination for travelers from around the world. If you're planning a trip to Portugal and want to stay connected with your iPhone, getting a local SIM card can be a cost-effective and convenient solution.

Why Get a Local SIM Card?

Using a local SIM card in Portugal offers several advantages over relying on your home carrier's international roaming plans, which can be expensive. With a local SIM card, you can enjoy affordable data plans, make calls, and send texts at local rates, saving you a significant amount of money, especially if you plan to stay in Portugal for an extended period.

SIM Card Options in Portugal

Portugal has three major mobile network operators: MEO, NOS, and Vodafone. Each of these providers offers various prepaid SIM card options with data, voice, and text packages to suit different needs and budgets.

MEO

MEO is a popular choice among locals and visitors alike. They offer prepaid SIM cards with various data packages, ranging from 500MB to 10GB, valid for 30 days. Prices for data packages start from around €5 for 500MB and go up to €20 for 10GB. You can also purchase add-on packages for additional data, voice minutes, and text messages.

NOS

NOS is another excellent option for getting a local SIM card in Portugal. Their prepaid SIM cards come with various data packages, starting from €5 for 1GB valid for 15 days and going up to €25 for 10GB valid for 30 days. NOS also offers add-on packages for extra data, voice, and text if needed.

Vodafone

Vodafone is a well-known international carrier, and their Portuguese branch offers competitive prepaid SIM card options. Their data packages range from €5 for 1GB valid for 15 days to €20 for 10GB valid for 30 days. Vodafone also provides add-on packages for additional data, voice, and text at reasonable prices.

Where to Buy a Local SIM Card in Portugal

You can purchase a local SIM card from any of the major mobile network operators' retail stores or authorized resellers located throughout Portugal. Many stores are conveniently located in airports, shopping malls, and city centers. It's advisable to have your passport or another valid form of identification handy when purchasing a SIM card.

Overall, getting a local SIM card in Portugal for your iPhone is a straightforward process, and the cost is reasonable, especially when compared to international roaming charges. By doing so, you can stay connected while exploring the beautiful sights and sounds of Portugal without breaking the bank.
