It’s been a decade, but my family did at least ten house exchanges over the years, all around the world, with Home Link.
Worst that ever happened was someone broke a cheap lamp and replaced it in our home.

We've used homeexchange.com since 2017 and have done two exchanges to Europe. Good site, wonderful experiences. Feel free to PM if you have questions or want to chat more.

I haven’t used home exchange but I do use the website Trusted Housesitters and there are many posting in Europe. It often involves some type of pet care - I’ve used it many times in North America and have had wonderful success with that.

I've done almost 50 exchanges, with many of them in Europe. I use (and love) HomeExchange.com. In fact I had to cancel 10 for this summer/fall due to Covid
It has the most participants of all of the sites. PM me if you want more info, or if you're going to sign up!

We’ve done 21 exchanges in the past 5 years on HomeExchange. It’s allowed us to double our travel. Not only do we travel way more, but the properties and locations we stay are way better than we could afford if we were paying cash. Their insurance is really good too. On one trip the heater/water boiler broke in winter, and it was very easy to make a claim, get approved, and then go book a hotel. The company is owned and operated by people that are passionate about exchanging and they really do have good hearts.
Finally, it just makes you feel good to mutually help folks travel/be helped. A game changer for us.

Home Exchange in Europe: An Affordable Way to Explore Different Cultures
Traveling across Europe can be an incredible experience, but the cost of accommodation can quickly add up. If you're looking for an affordable and unique way to explore different cities and cultures, a home exchange might be the perfect solution. In this blog post, we'll dive into the world of home exchanges in Europe, discussing popular websites, things to keep in mind, and the overall experience.
What is a Home Exchange?
A home exchange is a concept where you swap homes with someone else, typically for a predetermined period. Instead of paying for accommodation, you simply exchange your living spaces. This allows both parties to experience a new environment while enjoying the comforts of a fully-furnished home, often at a fraction of the cost of traditional accommodation.
Popular Home Exchange Websites in Europe
- HomeExchange.com: One of the largest and most well-known home exchange websites, with a vast selection of homes across Europe and around the world.
- HomeLink: Another popular platform with a strong presence in Europe, offering a variety of home exchange options.
- Intervac: A long-standing home exchange network that has been operating for over 60 years, with a focus on Europe and North America.
- Love Home Swap: A user-friendly website that allows you to search for home swaps by location, dates, and even specific amenities.
Things to Look Out For
- Communication: Clear and open communication with the other party is crucial. Discuss expectations, house rules, and any potential concerns before finalizing the exchange.
- Security: Thoroughly research the person or family you'll be exchanging homes with, and consider conducting a video call or meeting in person if possible. Most reputable home exchange websites have verification processes in place.
- Insurance: While home exchanges are generally safe, it's a good idea to ensure that your home and personal belongings are adequately insured in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
- Cultural Differences: Be mindful and respectful of cultural differences when staying in someone else's home. Familiarize yourself with local customs and etiquette.
- Logistics: Plan ahead for transportation, local amenities, and any necessary arrangements for pets or special needs.
The Home Exchange Experience
Aside from the obvious financial benefits, a home exchange offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and truly experience a destination like a local. You'll have access to a fully-equipped kitchen, allowing you to cook and dine like the residents do. Additionally, you'll gain valuable insights and recommendations from your exchange partners, enabling you to uncover hidden gems and authentic experiences that you might have missed as a regular tourist.
While home exchanges require a bit more planning and trust than traditional accommodations, the rewards can be truly exceptional. If you're open to the experience and take the necessary precautions, a home exchange can provide an unforgettable and affordable way to explore Europe's diverse cultures and lifestyles.
