I lived in Japan for 3 years and did a couple of seasons at ski resorts on the main island (where you will be). I would HIGHLY recommend Nozawa Onsen. Great little village and more snow than you can shake a stick at! Plus, 14 free onsens (hot springs)!

How about Karuizawa?? They have ski resort and easy access (around 1 hour bullet train ride from Tokyo) Best part of Karuizawa within walking distance from station there are huge outlet so you can enjoy shopping as well
If you like more local hidden ski resort then I would recommend Kusatsu Ski resort! They do have heli ski as well. They have free onsen all over the town and its not huge town so you can walk around easily. If you stay hotel, usually they give you free ride to ski park. There is direct bus to Kusatsu from Shinjuku.
I never been but maybe worth checking out Echigo Yuzawa, its known for ski resort too. A lot of snow and an hour 20 min ride by bullet train!
Good luck! I hope you have a lot of fun
