Looking at 2022 - Can anyone suggest the best places to surf for not overly experienced surfers in the Caribbean? In Hawaii? In Costa Rica? TIA

When I’m 2022. Because of the trade winds in Hawaii you may have bigger waves on different sides. We prefer staying near Waikiki and using Waiminalo beach as we are not experienced. We do like Sandy beach as well however there’s some serious coral and if you are not aware of it can cause some pretty good injuries
We usually travel in December to March when the bigger waves are at the north shore.
I’d advise to stay away from the north side if you are not experienced as the undertow is wicked. Most times they have no swimming warnings up at that time of the year.

There were lots of people surfing in san Juan del air in Nicaragua when we went! Highly recommend it there. You can volcano board as well

Brooklyn San Juan del Sur is a great spot for surfing!
for both beginners, and pros! Nicaragua is more affordable than Costa Rica. Equally as beautiful.

I would look at Nosara and south of that. Nosara to Santa Teresa is beautiful. Just returned from Tamarindo and didn’t love it there (talking area wise not surfing wise)

Erin All of those are good surf, but Nosara and Santa Teresa is a bit more pricey to get to and stay. Depends on what sort of accommodations you’re looking for. We were backpacking, and Tamarindo was cheaper to transport to and had more affordable hostels. But if that’s not an issue, then Nosara and surrounding area is lovely and more secluded and great surf!!

Наст you get what you pay for. Definitely

I’ll also say that it depends on if you surf leftie or rightie when you surf/board! This coast has both, but I am pretty sure Nosara has the longest left curl in the world. Worth checking if the curl where you go matched your dom leg
makes it easier to learn!

Best Surf Spots for Beginners in the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Costa Rica (2022)

Looking for the perfect wave to hang ten without getting wiped out? You've come to the right place! This post covers some top-notch beginner-friendly surf spots in the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Costa Rica, perfect for those still finding their balance.

Caribbean

The Caribbean offers warm water and generally mellower waves, making it ideal for learning. Here are a few standouts:

  • Barbados (South Coast): Freights Bay is a popular spot known for its gentle waves and surf schools. Soup Bowl, further east, is more advanced but worth a look once you progress.
  • Dominican Republic (Cabarete): Known for consistent wind and waves, Cabarete is great for learning. Playa Encuentro, just west of town, is a particularly good spot for beginners with multiple surf schools and board rentals.
  • Puerto Rico (Rincón): Maria's Beach and Domes Beach are excellent beginner beaches with smaller waves and sandy bottoms. Tres Palmas is a world-class wave nearby, but definitely one to aspire to, not start on.

Hawaii

The birthplace of surfing can be intimidating, but there are plenty of gentle options for learners:

  • Oahu (South Shore): Waikiki Beach is iconic for a reason. While crowded, the small, rolling waves are perfect for learning. Consider lessons for navigating the crowds and etiquette.
  • Oahu (South Shore): White Plains Beach, also known as Kalaeloa, is a less crowded alternative to Waikiki with mellow waves suitable for beginners.
  • Maui (South Shore): Lahaina Breakwall offers smaller, predictable waves perfect for newbies. It can get busy, especially during peak season.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a surfing paradise with options for all levels, including these beginner-friendly gems:

  • Tamarindo (Guanacaste): Tamarindo Beach is a classic learn-to-surf spot with consistent waves and a plethora of surf schools. It can get crowded, but the vibe is fun and supportive.
  • Manuel Antonio (Puntarenas): The beach breaks here offer beginner-friendly waves, especially during the dry season (December-April). Quepos, just down the road, also has a couple of beginner-friendly breaks.
  • Montezuma (Nicoya Peninsula): This bohemian town has several beaches with gentler waves ideal for beginners. The laid-back atmosphere makes it a great place to learn and enjoy the pura vida lifestyle.

Tips for Beginner Surfers

  • Take a lesson: A qualified instructor can teach you the basics and help you avoid bad habits.
  • Rent a bigger board: A longer, wider board provides more stability and makes it easier to catch waves.
  • Choose the right spot: Look for beaches with small, gentle waves and sandy bottoms.
  • Be patient: Surfing takes time and practice. Don't get discouraged if you don't catch a wave right away.
  • Respect the locals and other surfers: Observe surf etiquette and be mindful of others in the water.

Remember to check surf reports and conditions before heading out and always prioritize safety. Have fun and enjoy the ride!
