Question:

Looking for advice!! I'm traveling to Tokyo, Japan in the last week of April OR the first week of May. Has anyone has stayed in Tokyo for Golden Week? Wondering if flights to Tokyo, hotel stays, and food are more expensive during that week. I've heard that many things close down that week. Should I go or avoid this week? I need help in deciding whether which week to fly in. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

Japan will be VERY BUSY during Golden week - hard to travel anywhere. Get a Japan Rail Pass before you go - huge savings

I was in Tokyo for Golden Week and it was a complete and utter sh*t show. It's not just golden week in Japan too but also in China, so in addition to people from other parts of Japan that visit Tokyo during this time, there are a ton of Chinese tourists that flood the streets. In some popular touristy areas, the crowds are so massive you are essentially a sardine and are just crawling along with the crowds of people. I would suggest going the last week of April instead if you can. I've been to Tokyo before at other times of the year and it was super pleasant, but golden week was just a nightmare. We weren't able to do everything we wanted to do because of the sheer number of people that also wanted to do the same things.

I have stayed in Tokyo during golden week. If you go on trains during non-peak hours it isn't too bad. It will be busy. I stayed in a capsules hotel, and found it quite cheap and nice. Places will be busy, but it's survivable.

If you have a choice- avoid it at this time.

Avoid it. I used to live in Japan; that's a week when everyone is traveling. If you can go before Golden Week, you might be able to see some of the cherry blossoms depending on when they decide to bloom.

Avoid if you can as it will be busy everywhere. If cannot avoid it, hope for the best and enjoy it as it is a fabulous city.

Tokyo Travel: To Go or Not to Go During Golden Week?

Ah, Tokyo, the vibrant and bustling capital of Japan – a destination that captures the hearts of travelers worldwide. As you prepare for your journey, you've raised a valid concern: whether to visit during Golden Week or avoid it altogether. This week-long national holiday in Japan is a significant event, and it's crucial to understand its implications for your travel plans.

What is Golden Week?

Golden Week is a cluster of national holidays in Japan that typically falls around the end of April or the beginning of May. During this period, many businesses, attractions, and establishments close or operate on reduced hours, allowing locals to take extended vacations or visit family and friends.

Pros and Cons of Visiting Tokyo During Golden Week

Pros:

  • Festive Atmosphere: Golden Week is a time of celebration and tradition, and you may have the opportunity to witness unique cultural events and festivals.
  • Immersive Experience: With fewer tourists around, you may get a more authentic glimpse into the local lifestyle and traditions.

Cons:

  • Increased Costs: Due to high demand, flights, accommodation, and even food prices may be higher during this period.
  • Crowded Destinations: Popular tourist attractions, parks, and transportation hubs may be more crowded with locals enjoying their time off.
  • Limited Access: Many businesses, museums, and attractions may be closed or operate on reduced hours, limiting your sightseeing options.

Deciding Which Week to Visit

Ultimately, the decision to visit Tokyo during Golden Week or avoid it comes down to your personal preferences and travel goals. If you're looking for a more authentic and immersive experience, and don't mind potential closures and higher costs, then visiting during Golden Week could be a unique and memorable adventure.

However, if you prefer a more traditional sightseeing experience with easier access to attractions and potentially lower prices, it might be better to plan your trip for the week before or after Golden Week.

Tips for Visiting Tokyo During Golden Week

If you decide to visit Tokyo during Golden Week, here are some tips to make the most of your trip:

  • Research and plan ahead: Check for closures and reduced operating hours of attractions, and plan your itinerary accordingly.
  • Book accommodations early: Hotels and accommodations tend to fill up quickly, so make your reservations well in advance.
  • Embrace local festivities: Participate in local celebrations and festivals to immerse yourself in the culture and traditions.
  • Be prepared for crowds: Popular destinations and transportation hubs may be more crowded, so plan accordingly and have patience.

No matter when you decide to visit Tokyo, it's sure to be an unforgettable experience. With careful planning and an open mind, you can make the most of your time in this captivating city.
