Soooooo... I have heard that Cancun has the better water and beaches right now....any further down is murky and not as crystal clear.......can anyone confirm this? Have never been to the Caribbean side and want the clear water and white beaches or will just go to the pacific side Thanks!!!!!

Cancun is on the Caribbean side. Stay that side. Pacific waters not so clear at all. Playa Del Carmen has beautiful waters n not so busy as Cancun depending on season.

We have been there over the last few years - there is a lot of sea grass? Not too sure how it is doing this year? We have found some nice places to play in the water through PV. Friends love M ...

Geri SO MUCH SEA GRASS. I was in playa for a week and didn't hit the water once because of it

I think farther south of Cancun has nicer water. We always go to playa de Carmen or Tulum.

Malcolm the water was definitely more of that picture perfect blue farther down south.
If it’s the sea grass I’m not sure what area is worse

Has the seaweed stopped coming ashore in Cancun?

My understanding is the sargasm ( sea grass ) is worse in the late spring through rainy season. This is the best time of year for clear blue water. I go every year beginning of May and it’s been bad the last 7 years.
Resorts are generally very safe. If you like ocean, Ocean Turquesa & Coral has one of the widest stretches of beach of any hotel and you can walk for miles south to the next town. Sand is great. Resort has just been renovated.

We are about 30-40 min away from Cancun and beach and water has lots of seaweed ... Similar to the last few times we have been here. I have heard Cancun beaches are much clearer!

Hmmm... well I went to the Cancun side because everyone calls it the Caribbean. When people asked me what I thought of it I could only reply "if people think that water is blue and the sand is white then they haven't been to the real Caribbean." Photo attached of the Virgin Islands Caribbean so you can see why I was so under-enthused by the Caribbean side of Mexico. Specifically the water on that side of Mexico didn't come close to this shade of blue, at least not in person. Given the time to fly to that side, I would spend my time on the west coast of Mexico.

Brenda Good to know. Been to PV and not a fan. Where on the pacific side do people recommend?

Anywhere in the Caribbean is a good time
Niece just got back from Cancun, it was her first time and the water was clear and stunningly beautiful
certainly, when you are in that area go for a day trip to Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. Another fun day trip is to take the ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujuires, rent a golf cart and drive around the island, stopping for lunch and dinner, then take the last ferry back, a really fun day
Have a great new experience

I second Isla Mujeres off Cancun, they also have bike rentals for riding around.
Good bus tours to Chichen Itza and even further is Uxmal that I liked better than Chichen because it wasn't as touristy.

Cancun Water and Beaches vs. Caribbean Side

When it comes to choosing the perfect beach destination, the water quality and beach conditions are often top of mind. And when it comes to the Caribbean, two destinations that often come to mind are Cancun and the Caribbean side of Mexico. But which one has the better water and beaches?

The short answer is: it depends.

Cancun is located on the Yucatan Peninsula, which is known for its white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. The water in Cancun is typically calm and clear, making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. However, Cancun is also a popular tourist destination, which can mean that the beaches can be crowded, especially during peak season.

The Caribbean side of Mexico is less developed than Cancun, and as a result, the beaches are often less crowded. The water on the Caribbean side is also typically clear, but it can be more turquoise in color than the water in Cancun. The beaches on the Caribbean side are also often wider and whiter than the beaches in Cancun.

So, which one is better? It really depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a lively beach destination with plenty of activities and amenities, then Cancun is a great choice. However, if you're looking for a more secluded beach experience with crystal-clear water and white-sand beaches, then the Caribbean side of Mexico may be a better option.

Here is a summary of the key differences between Cancun and the Caribbean side of Mexico:

  • Cancun:
    • More developed and touristy
    • Crowded beaches, especially during peak season
    • Clear water, but can be more green in color
    • White-sand beaches, but can be narrower

  • Caribbean side of Mexico:

    • Less developed and more secluded
    • Wider and whiter beaches
    • Clear water, but can be more turquoise in color
    • Less crowded beaches

Ultimately, the best way to decide which destination is right for you is to do some research and see which one aligns more with your travel preferences.
