Should I use a travel agent to book my flight to Japan for studying abroad?

Question:

Hi experienced travellers,
This might be a ridiculous question, but I have never flown out of country and am a bit lost, and Google is giving a lot of mixed advice. A friend and I need to book tickets to Japan to study abroad without a return date, and we need to leave 18 August. I have been advised to get a travel agent, but I've also been advised to do it myself on line, and then told that I will also be ripped off if I do it online because of cookie-pricing...
In your experience, should I be using a travel agent? Trivago? Airline websites? I am so confused.
Thank you!

To Use a Travel Agent or Not for International Flights?

Planning an international trip can be a daunting task, especially if you've never done it before. The question of whether to use a travel agent or book everything yourself online is a common dilemma. Let's explore the pros and cons of each option.

Using a Travel Agent

Pros:

  • Travel agents have extensive knowledge and experience in booking flights, accommodations, and activities. They can help you navigate the complexities of international travel, including visa requirements, travel insurance, and local customs.
  • They can often find better deals and discounts through their industry connections and partnerships.
  • If any issues arise during your trip, you have someone to contact for assistance and support.

Cons:

  • Travel agents typically charge service fees, which can add to the overall cost of your trip.
  • You may have less control over the specific details of your itinerary, such as flight times and hotel preferences.

Booking Online

Pros:

  • Booking online can be more convenient and flexible, allowing you to research and compare options at your own pace.
  • You have control over every aspect of your itinerary, from flights to accommodations.
  • Online booking platforms often offer discounts and promotions that can save you money.

Cons:

  • Navigating the vast array of options and understanding the fine print can be overwhelming and time-consuming.
  • You are responsible for handling any issues or changes that may arise during your trip.
  • There is a risk of falling victim to online scams or hidden fees if you don't thoroughly research reputable websites.

The Verdict

For a first-time international traveler, especially for a long-term trip like studying abroad without a return date, using a knowledgeable and reputable travel agent can be a wise choice. They can guide you through the process, ensure you have all the necessary documents and arrangements, and provide valuable support if any issues arise during your trip.

However, if you are comfortable navigating online booking platforms and have the time and patience to thoroughly research and compare options, booking online can save you money and give you more control over your itinerary.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to your personal preferences, budget, and travel experience. Whichever route you choose, be sure to book well in advance, read the fine print, and consider purchasing travel insurance for added peace of mind.
