As long as you are not leaving the airport Japan considers you in transit (not entering the country) and you shouldn't require anything special such as a test result (unless your final destination requires one).
This page on the japan airlines website helps explain:
https://www.jal.co.jp/.../flights.../quarantine-immigration/
However, the following cases require entry into Japan, and that's where you need to follow the entry rules for Japan (testing, etc):
- Transferring between Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) and Narita International Airport
- Travelers with a connecting flight out of Narita International Airport the following day
JAL.CO.JP
Entry restrictions for each country quarantine Measures - JAL

Chris I’m travelling to Singapore via Narita. I understand I don’t need a PCR test since I’m in transit & Singapore doesn’t have a requirement since I’m fully vaxed. What’s not fully clear to me is if I need a PCR test to get on the plane at YVR? I’m flying with ANA.

John Does your final destination require it? If not, then no.
Airlines (now) do not have specific requirements for testing to board.

Logan My final destination is Singapore, and they don’t require it, so thanks.

John so ur good. ANA nor Japan have testing requirements for transiting pax. Just make sure you meet the other requirements for transit.

Logan Thanks again. That is what I thought, but you’ve put my mind at ease.

If it's a long enough layover, see if you are able to reserve a pod hotel (they are booked waaaaay in advance) or get a lounge pass.

Painful as it is. They do a security screening on passengers transiting through Narita. So if you have a tight connection like one and a half hours there is zero time to look around and smell the roses.

Glad you asked this! I'm transiting through there as well in 3 weeks. Enjoy your vacation!

Need go security transfer, afterwards not much open, only a few restaurants, but they open after 11am, there is a 7-11. Otherwise just rest, watch airplanes til ur flight. Narita is a ghost town

We had a 10 hour lay over ( before Covid). Caught the bullet train into Tokyo for lunch. Still had time to get back to airport and found a shower. Had a great sleep for balance of trip home.

Donna yea can't do that now

I had layovers at both HND and NRT back in February and HND seemed very closed and quiet. NRT was a bit more open - definitely get a lounge pass. I booked myself into one of the showers and it was one of the best decisions I made.

Layover in Tokyo: An Unforgettable Experience

As an avid traveler, I've had my fair share of layovers in various airports around the world. However, my recent layover in Tokyo's Narita International Airport was an experience like no other. If you're planning a trip to Asia with a stopover in Tokyo, here are some tips to make the most of your layover:

1. Embrace the Culture

Narita Airport is a gateway to Japan's rich cultural heritage. Take a stroll through the airport and you'll be greeted by traditional Japanese architecture, beautifully designed gardens, and even a small shrine. Immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere and soak up the authentic Japanese ambiance.

2. Indulge in Delicious Cuisine

Japanese cuisine is world-renowned, and Narita Airport offers a plethora of dining options to satisfy your cravings. From sushi bars and ramen shops to Japanese-style cafes, you'll find an array of flavors to tantalize your taste buds. Don't miss the opportunity to try authentic Japanese dishes during your layover.

3. Explore the Shopping Opportunities

Narita Airport is a shopper's paradise. From traditional Japanese souvenirs and handicrafts to cutting-edge electronics and fashion, you'll find a diverse selection of items to indulge your shopping desires. Be sure to check out the duty-free shops for great deals on Japanese whisky, sake, and other unique products.

4. Relax and Rejuvenate

Long flights can be tiring, and a layover is the perfect opportunity to recharge your batteries. Narita Airport offers a range of relaxation facilities, including massage chairs, oxygen lounges, and even a traditional Japanese spa. Treat yourself to a rejuvenating experience and arrive at your final destination feeling refreshed and reenergized.

5. Plan Ahead

While Narita Airport is a delight to explore, it's essential to plan your layover carefully. Check your connecting flight times and ensure you have enough time to navigate the airport, clear security, and reach your departure gate. It's always better to err on the side of caution and arrive at your gate well in advance.

A layover in Tokyo's Narita International Airport is an opportunity to experience a fascinating blend of Japanese culture, cuisine, and hospitality. Embrace the chance to explore, indulge, and create lasting memories during your brief stay in this captivating city.
