Quetzaltrekkers in Leon. Hike the volcanoes with them. http://leon.quetzaltrekkers.org/

I would definitely recommend Leon (my favourite). Use Quetzaltrekkers they are awesome. Book volcano boarding through them (it's a great experience). Our lady grace cathedral is beautiful and makes for great pictures. I also checked out volcano Masaya (an active volcano). I went to Ometepe island but didn't really enjoy it...my personal opinion. The boat ride there is brutal. If you decide to go pay a bit extra and go on the bigger boat, the smaller one will make you sea sick.

Gigante is a great town on the pacific side

I recommend Isla de Ometepe if you're looking for peace, nature, volcanos to hike. I recommend San Juan del Sur if you want to party and drink
Nic
I'm a big fan of Ometepe as well.

Strongly recommend San Juan Del Sur. Last year traveled all over Nicaragua. This year, went back and stayed at our favorite place - SJDS. Many restaurant, great friendly people, very cheap. We stayed there for almost 3 months. Have fun.

Exploring Nicaragua in July
Backpacking through Nicaragua is an exciting adventure with a mix of beautiful landscapes, rich culture, and vibrant cities. Here are some recommendations for your upcoming trip:
Things to Do:
- Visit Granada - a charming colonial city with colorful buildings, historic churches, and a bustling market.
- Explore Ometepe Island - a volcanic island in Lake Nicaragua where you can hike, swim, and relax on the beaches.
- Hike in the cloud forests of Matagalpa - a lush region with stunning waterfalls, coffee plantations, and opportunities for birdwatching.
- Surf in San Juan del Sur - a popular beach town known for its great waves and vibrant nightlife.
Places to Stay:
For budget travelers, hostels are a great option. Look for hostels in popular backpacker destinations like Granada, Leon, and San Juan del Sur. If you prefer more comfort, consider staying in eco-lodges or boutique hotels in the countryside.
Additional Tips:
- July is the rainy season in Nicaragua, so be prepared for afternoon showers and pack accordingly.
- Try local dishes like gallo pinto (rice and beans), vigoron (pork rinds with yuca), and nacatamales (steamed corn dough filled with meat and vegetables).
- Don't forget to explore the local markets for handmade crafts, souvenirs, and fresh produce.
Overall, Nicaragua offers a unique and authentic travel experience for backpackers. Enjoy your trip!
