What are the best early morning activities in Reykjavík before hotel check-in?

Question:

My son and I are heading to Iceland the first week of November and our flight lands at 6am in Reykjavík. Any suggestions on things to do or a tour to take before we can get into the hotel at 2pm. We already have blue lagoon booked for another day. Thanks!

We booked our hotel for the day before so when we got in we went right to bed for a couple of hours. Then we explored Reykavik that afternoon.

Janice I second this advice. I wish I’d done it when we were there at Christmas.

I would suggest asking nicely at the hotel when you arrive if they are able to let you have your room early, especially if it is a hotel frequented by business people. They often check out very early, housekeeping get the rooms cleaned straight away and they are available. Never hurts to ask! And even if the rooms are not available, most hotels will allow you to leave your luggage so you don't have to carry it around sight-seeing with you.

Exploring Iceland: Things to Do Before Check-In

How exciting that you and your son are heading to Iceland! With a flight landing at 6am in Reykjavík, you have plenty of time to explore before you can check into your hotel at 2pm. Here are some suggestions on things to do or tours to take:

1. Reykjavík City Tour

Consider taking a guided city tour of Reykjavík to get a feel for the capital of Iceland. You can visit landmarks such as Hallgrímskirkja Church, Harpa Concert Hall, and the Sun Voyager sculpture. You can also explore the charming streets filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants.

2. Golden Circle Tour

If you're up for a longer tour, the Golden Circle is a popular route that includes stops at Þingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss Waterfall. This tour will give you a taste of Iceland's natural beauty and geothermal wonders.

3. Whale Watching Tour

Another option is to take a whale watching tour from Reykjavík's harbor. November is a good time for whale watching in Iceland, and you may spot species such as humpback whales, minke whales, and orcas.

4. Explore Reykjavík's Museums

If you're interested in history and culture, you can visit one of Reykjavík's museums. The National Museum of Iceland, the Saga Museum, and the Reykjavík Art Museum are all worth a visit.

5. Relax at a Local Cafe

If you prefer a more laid-back start to your day, you can relax at a local cafe and enjoy a cup of Icelandic coffee or hot chocolate. This can be a cozy way to pass the time before you can check into your hotel.

Remember to dress warmly as November in Iceland can be chilly. And don't forget to pack your camera to capture the beautiful sights!

We hope you have a wonderful time in Iceland!
