We booked our hotel for the day before so when we got in we went right to bed for a couple of hours. Then we explored Reykavik that afternoon.

I would suggest asking nicely at the hotel when you arrive if they are able to let you have your room early, especially if it is a hotel frequented by business people. They often check out very early, housekeeping get the rooms cleaned straight away and they are available. Never hurts to ask! And even if the rooms are not available, most hotels will allow you to leave your luggage so you don't have to carry it around sight-seeing with you.
