Have rented a car a few times in Jamaica. Through island rentals. Takes a bit of time to get used to driving on the other side of the road. For the most part the roads are good. Wouldn't recommend night driving. But renting a car is the best way to see the island at your pace.

Hired a cab to take us from Ocho Rio to Mandeville...cheaper & safer than a rental

I rent cars every year there . Things to be careful for is the same as anywhere else. Driving is intense but depending on where your staying in JA it varies on the driving conditions. Rent from a known car rental company, go through the full car . Hub caps, spare tires , jack to the car being returned clean.

Do you recommend any particular rental company?

Cassandr I always use Avis, book before . Avis has nicer rentals, good rates. Hopefully you have a world credit card, you can use the insurance from your credit card. If you don’t have one and if you have a few weeks left before you leave, id suggest call your credit card company before and get it. Will save ya a bunch of money. Do not buy or rent their gps, or anything

Cassandr also do not drive at night, check the fuel before you receive the car, hope they give ya a Toyota

I wouldn't recommend driving. It's pretty crazy. It would be more enjoyable to hire a driver to see the sites.

I would recommend going there first and seeing for yourself. Very narrow roads (depending where you are). Not well taken care of. Also they drive on the left.

National was solid to deal with this Summer. Only issue we had the gas station attendants try to screw you on the conversion rates and one even charged us to fill the tank without putting any fuel in!

We hired a driver with a car to take us around. Was less expensive than renting.

Does anyone have experience renting a car in Jamaica? How was it?

Yes, I have personally rented a car in Jamaica and it was a great experience overall. Renting a car in Jamaica can be a convenient way to explore the island at your own pace and on your own schedule. However, there are a few things to keep in mind before renting a car in Jamaica.

Pros of Renting a Car in Jamaica:

  • Freedom to explore the island independently
  • Convenience of having your own transportation
  • Ability to visit off-the-beaten-path locations

Cons of Renting a Car in Jamaica:

  • Driving on the left side of the road can be challenging for some
  • Traffic congestion in major cities like Kingston and Montego Bay
  • Potential for aggressive driving by locals

Overall, my experience renting a car in Jamaica was positive. The rental process was smooth, the car was in good condition, and having the freedom to explore the island on my own terms was priceless. I would definitely recommend renting a car in Jamaica to anyone looking to have a more authentic and flexible travel experience on the island.
