Given the area you are looking in, consider adding Belize to the mix. Beaches, world class snorkeling/diving, ruins, adventure tourism, affordable... A little outside the box but worth considering.

Roatan offers same but much much cheaper

I went to Cuba in sept. It was HOT but no rain and no hurricane. It was cheap. 750 taxes in 5* all inclusive. Best relaxing vacation ever. The people are so nice.

Patriaca Varadero Privilege. Private area for privilege members. We were there in September. Short falsh rain in the afternoon. You won't regret it.
San Jose Costa Rica is OK. Nearest beach id more than a hour away. I used to live in CA.
Or look into Dominican Republic!
Prefer booking with Westjet all inclusive. Good luck! http://www.oceanvaradero.com

I did not like Colombian beaches, I did however LOVE Medellin!! Also we used points to fly from one city to another. Flights were all less then $100...

Costa Rica and head to Caribbean side, not rainy season over there (why stay in San Jose?)

Juan

But how far is it flying into San Jose?

Profile picture of Janine

Janine

Juan it’s a few hours from the airport, most going there would fly into San Jose. Catching a bus/shuttle is very common (or you can actually work in a rafting day trip to get between the two as well).

Cuba is not expensive . Check out Cayo Santa Maria , with sunwing.
Valentin perla Blanca has amazing beach and is adult only

The thing is I am doing a multi-leg trip flying on points so my airfare is next to nothing based on the cities I have mentioned. What I have to factor in is where I can get the most bang for the buck. That picture of the water is amazing! I have to fly into Havana if i choose Cuba as there is nothing for Varadero. Taxis in Cuba look to be 70CUC which is a bit pricey.

Hmmm - you can't go to Colombia and not go to cartajena. It is an actual crime to even consider it.

Go to Puerto Viejo on Caribbean Side of Costa Rica. Just 5 hours from San Jose using Interbus. Weather is fantastic on that side in September. Also check out Bocas del Toro in Panama. Same great weather. Was there last September

I’ve been to 25 countries, Colombia is easily top 3, if not my favorite. Nothing beats the culture, history, and the people. Costa Rica is expensive and overrun by tourists. Everyone goes to Cuba
.

FYI when we were in Cuba last winter they closed the beaches when it was windy you could lay on the sand but not go in the water

Facing a Dilemma: Where to Travel in September?

Choosing a travel destination can be a tough decision, especially when each option has its own pros and cons. Let's break down your options:

Honduras

Honduras is a beautiful country with stunning beaches, rich culture, and delicious food. However, it's important to note that September is peak hurricane season in the Caribbean, so there may be some weather risks.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is known for its lush rainforests, diverse wildlife, and eco-friendly tourism. While San Jose may not have beaches nearby, you can easily travel to coastal towns like Manuel Antonio or Tamarindo for some beach time. Just be prepared for some rainy weather during the rainy season.

Cuba

Cuba is a vibrant and colorful destination with a unique history and culture. However, September is also peak hurricane season in the Caribbean, so there is a risk of encountering bad weather. Additionally, Cuba can be more expensive compared to other destinations.

Colombia

Colombia is a diverse country with stunning landscapes, rich history, and delicious food. While it's true that there are no beaches in Bogota, you can easily travel to coastal cities like Cartagena or Santa Marta for some beach time. Just be aware that September is also the rainy season in Colombia.

So, what should you do? Ultimately, the decision comes down to your personal preferences and priorities. If you're willing to take a risk with the weather, Honduras or Cuba could offer unique experiences. If you want a mix of culture and beach time, Costa Rica or Colombia could be great options.

Consider what activities and experiences are most important to you, and weigh the pros and cons of each destination. No matter where you choose to go, remember to stay safe, be mindful of the local culture, and have an amazing adventure!
