Going to the Philippines in December however, we have a 16hr layover in Narita, Japan. We land in Narita Airport at 4:25 pm and leave 9:30am the next day. Any suggestions on what to do/where to go in a short amount of time? Is it worth to take the train to Tokyo? Thanks in advance!

Narita has the sleep pods that might be fun to try.

It doesn't take long to take the train to Tokyo! If you have time and the opportunity I say go for it! But there are things to do in Narita I believe. We went directly to the airport when we left and directly to Kyoto when we arrived so I didn't get to explore narita

I do reccomend APA hotels. They're a chain and quite nice AND reasonably priced.

Go have dinner and a wander in Tokyo! Lots of places open late, especially in Shibuya.

I used to live in Narita - it has the most amazing temple and grounds. Totally worth a visit: http://www.naritasan.or.jp/english/

We will probably try to check out Narita-san temple. I don't think we can go to Boso No Mura museum. Any recommendations to do in the evening?

Some time ago, you could book a bus tour into Tokyo to/from Narita. A good way to pass a chunk of time, if it is still offered.

No matter what you do, DO NOT BOOK A HOTEL AT NRT AIRPORT. I was there for a 15 hour layover last year and wanted a nice place to stay so I looked for a hotel. The hotel I went to charged me the equivalent of CAD120 for a room with literally just a shower in the corner, a tiny single seater chair that you'd find in any hotel lobby (but not as comfy) and an itty bitty flat screen infront of the chair. Now I know better not to book a hotel at an airport except when you're literally about to pass out hahhhaah

What to Do During a 16-Hour Layover in Narita, Japan

A 16-hour layover in Narita, Japan, might seem like an eternity, but it can also be an opportunity to explore a bit of the country's fascinating culture and history. While Narita itself is a relatively small city, it's conveniently located near Tokyo, one of the world's most vibrant and exciting metropolises.

Take a Train to Tokyo

If you're up for a little adventure, it's definitely worth taking the train to Tokyo. The journey takes approximately an hour by train, and the experience of riding the efficient and punctual Japanese rail system is an attraction in itself. Once in Tokyo, you'll have a multitude of options to choose from, depending on your interests and energy levels.

Explore Tokyo's Iconic Attractions

If you have a full day to spare, you can visit some of Tokyo's most iconic attractions, such as the Sensoji Temple, the Imperial Palace, and the Shibuya Crossing. These landmarks offer a glimpse into Japan's rich history and modern culture. Don't forget to try some delicious street food or visit a traditional izakaya (Japanese pub) for a taste of local cuisine.

Narita City Center

If you prefer to stay closer to the airport, Narita City Center offers a few interesting options. You can visit the Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, a beautiful Buddhist temple dating back to the 10th century. The temple grounds are peaceful and serene, providing a tranquil respite from the hustle and bustle of travel.

Additionally, you can explore the Omotesando Street, a charming shopping and dining area lined with traditional Japanese shops and restaurants. Here, you can sample local delicacies, browse for souvenirs, and soak in the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese town.

Relax at the Airport

If you'd prefer to take it easy and recharge before your next flight, Narita Airport itself offers several amenities to help you unwind. You can visit the airport's observation deck, which offers stunning views of the runways and the surrounding countryside. There are also plenty of shops, restaurants, and lounges where you can grab a bite, do some shopping, or simply relax and people-watch.

Regardless of how you choose to spend your layover, remember to factor in travel time to and from the airport, as well as any potential delays or unexpected circumstances. With a little planning and an open mind, a 16-hour layover in Narita can be an opportunity to experience a glimpse of Japan's rich culture and create lasting memories.
