Is the Grand Sunset Princess in the Mayan Riviera worth the 5-star rating?

Question:

Has anyone stayed at the Grand Sunset Princess in the Mayan Riviera? It's listed as a 5 star but some of the reviews aren't that great. Is there another AI in that area you would recommend? Looking for a 4-5 star resort. Thanks!

Grande Bahia Principe Tulum

If staying at Bahia definitely stay at Akumal over Tulum. Tulum uses resort grey water for watering and has a very strong smell. Akumal was a step up.

There are actually a lot of complaints at this resort. I stayed with no issues but a lot of people are getting sick.

The pools and grounds are beautiful at the Grand Princess/Sunset. The rooms are nice too. I found the food really low end and you could follow the food patterns from Meal to meal. Cold food wasn’t always cold and hot not always hot.

Barcelo Maya Beach or Grand Principe on the same compound. Best all-inclusive I've been to. Been there 3 times now, never a bad day. Food is always amazing, rooms are always clean and the grounds and beaches are always immaculate.

I recall beach is quite a walk from the rooms.

Just stayed at the Grand Riviera Princess and it was really good. Can also recommend the Barceló Maya Beach.

Just returned from a repeat trip to Barcelo. It’s always great. The resort is very walkable and user friendly. We used all the pools and restaurants. It’s a great choice.

We have been there 7 times & always awesome
Have stayed at Tulum & Akumal which know is Don Bablo & only guests can access the Auckmal resot which is awesome

The sunset princess is the one that blew up from a build up of natural gas under the resort many many years ago. It is a huge resort, lots of walking. I didn't know it was five star... Mexico five star doesn't mean much. Food was not great, I've had better at smaller, fewer starred resorts. The Beach is nice, rooms were nice and clean. Grounds and pools were nice.

My friends were there when it blew up.... they werent' much help either...

We've been twice. First time was great, second time-out so much. The rooms have gone downhill. Food is good for the first few days but a bit boring after that since it doesn't vary much from day to day. We won't return. If you can stay in the private villas for adults only that is your best bet.

I really enjoyed it when I was there 4 years ago, but agreed, there's a lot of walking as it's a fairly large resort.

Profile picture of Stephani

Stephani

and if none of those, do you like busy or quiet... kids or no kids. theres lots to ask, but I would have the best resort after hahaha

Profile picture of Kim

Kim

I would love to explore little towns!! Yes snorkelling but my kids want to spend most of their time in the beach. Beach volleyball. I like to shop. Lol. What kinds of things are there to do?

Profile picture of Stephani

Stephani

tons..ok, let me think first, i don't have kids, but that's ok, i know the resorts... and im not a travel agent lol

Profile picture of Kim

Kim Ray Mazur I figured a bit older with the volleyball

Profile picture of Stephani

Stephani

ok,.. so some of the resorts I was thinking, do not do volleyball as it's too loud, and some have turtles nesting.. so... have you checked Grand Sirenis? it's got a lazy river to drink beer all day on, the entertainment staff is amazballs for volleyball etc, it's across from Cozumel to take the ferry one day, you guys can take the bus to XelHa which is a full awesome day, and it's a short bus to playa del carmen for the shopping... it's big, but its so much fun. there's tons of snorkeling right out front, theres the rocks that have iguanas and lizards on, buffet (which some dont)... it's all around a great fun resort.

A lazy river sounds like fun! Thanks for your suggestions.

But okay then. She doesn’t have to take my advice
it’s just a beautiful resort with a great pool and beach, near Puerto Morelos, which is a fun little town.

I was there in 2012 and was good, nice beach, good accommodation, good food, few a la carte restaurants, but we are talking Mexico and my trip was 5years ago.

I stayed at the Grand Sunset Princess about a year ago. Beautiful hotel, pool, beach, and setting.
The main restaurants are buffet style, okay food, but not 5 star quality.

Grand Sunset Princess in the Mayan Riviera: A Mixed Bag?

Planning a vacation to the Mayan Riviera and considering the Grand Sunset Princess resort? This 5-star property certainly looks appealing on paper, but as with any hotel, it's always wise to delve deeper into the reviews before making a decision.

The Good

Many guests rave about the resort's stunning beachfront location, with crystal-clear waters and powdery white sand. The property itself is visually stunning, with well-manicured grounds and impressive architecture. The rooms are spacious and well-appointed, and the variety of dining options is a major plus.

The Not-So-Good

However, there are several recurring complaints that potential guests should be aware of. Many reviewers have cited issues with subpar service, from indifferent staff to long waits for basic amenities. There have also been reports of worn-out facilities and a general lack of maintenance in certain areas of the resort.

An Alternative Option: The Barceló Maya Grand Resort

If you're seeking a reliable 4-5 star experience in the Mayan Riviera, consider the Barceló Maya Grand Resort. This sprawling complex consistently receives high marks for its impeccable service, top-notch amenities, and family-friendly atmosphere. With multiple pools, restaurants, and entertainment options, the Barceló Maya Grand Resort offers something for everyone.

Of course, every traveler's preferences and priorities are different, so be sure to thoroughly research any potential resort before making your final decision. Happy travels!
