Should I book a round trip flight to Australia or fly in/out of different cities?

Question:

I'm looking at flights to Australia for the month of July. Starting in Sydney and leaving from Melbourne. Based on what I've seen, it will make the most sense for to fly in/out of the same city and just do an internal flight in Australia. The lowest price I've found has been approx $1600 for a round trip flight from Toronto to Sydney via United. I also tried the Melbourne deal that was posted a few weeks ago, but sadly the dates didn't work for me.
My question is, does anyon… See more

can try playing around with the flights and see which ones have multiple layovers...and you'd want a long enough layover of at least 6hrs so you can go into the city and check it out. I went from Auckland to sydney, then had a 13hrs layover in San Fran before flying back to TO. Common stops are SF and LA

If you wanted, you could stop in Hawaii. I was in Sydney for new years and the cheapest way to come home ended up being to fly to Hawaii and then from Hawaii to Toronto (these flights were booked separately by the way). Just another option to check in to if you are so inclined.

I flew cathay pacific to Sydney, Australia via free stop-over extended stay in Hong Kong, China, their main flight hub. Great airline! From HK to Sydney only 9hrs... They fly to Japan, rest of Asia... They have multi-city pass too, check their site... You can also stop-over in San Francisco or L.A. with other airlines then travel Down Under which breaks up the long haul flight... Winter in Australia begins from June-Aug. Their winter is cool, pleasant, 8-16C.

Jetstar flys out of Hawaii, can't remember which city. Might be worth looking into.

Try Tokyo or Honolulu, aus no frills airline Jetstar can get you from either of those places fairly cheap. Will have to book 2 separate tickets, so make sure you leave enough time between flights! You could also try Singapore or Bali (depending on how cheap the flights from Toronto are)

Try Jetstar and TigerAir for deals from Australia to Japan/SE Asia! They regularly have sales (once got a return trip to japan for $400!)

Finding Affordable Flights to Australia

Planning a trip to Australia can be an exciting yet daunting task, especially when it comes to finding affordable flights. With the vast distances involved and the popularity of Australia as a travel destination, airfares can quickly become a significant expense.

Your Travel Plans

Based on your travel plans, you're looking to start your journey in Sydney and depart from Melbourne during the month of July. You've mentioned that flying in and out of the same city and taking an internal flight within Australia seems to be the most logical approach.

Flight Options and Prices

From your research, you've found that the lowest price for a round-trip flight from Toronto to Sydney via United Airlines is approximately $1,600. Additionally, you've explored the Melbourne deal that was posted a few weeks ago, but unfortunately, the dates didn't align with your travel plans.

Seeking Advice and Recommendations

Your question implies that you're seeking advice and recommendations from fellow travelers or industry experts on finding the most affordable flights to Australia for your specific travel dates and routing.

Here are a few tips and suggestions that might help you find a better deal:

  • Be flexible with travel dates: If possible, try to be flexible with your travel dates. Even shifting your travel plans by a day or two can sometimes result in significant savings on airfares.
  • Consider alternative routes: While flying directly to Sydney or Melbourne might seem convenient, exploring alternative routes with stopovers or connecting flights could potentially save you money.
  • Watch for deals and promotions: Airlines and travel websites often offer promotional deals and discounts, especially during off-peak seasons or for early bookings. Sign up for email alerts and follow airline and travel deal websites to stay informed.
  • Consider budget airlines: While not always the most comfortable option, budget airlines operating within Australia or the Pacific region may offer cheaper alternatives for your internal flights.
  • Use flight search engines and price comparison tools: Websites like Skyscanner, Kayak, and Google Flights allow you to compare prices across multiple airlines and dates, helping you find the best deal.

Remember, patience and flexibility are key when it comes to finding affordable flights, especially for long-haul destinations like Australia. Don't hesitate to seek advice from fellow travelers or consult with travel agents who may have insider knowledge and access to exclusive deals.
