"There is no nationwide advisory in effect for Mexico. However, you should exercise a high degree of caution, especially in those parts of the country experiencing a deteriorating security situation. Most major tourist areas have not been affected by the extreme levels of violence in the northern region. It is highly advisable to travel to Mexico by air in order to avoid land border crossings through potentially dangerous regions. High levels of criminal activity, as well as occasional illegal roadblocks, demonstrations and protests remain a concern throughout the country. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to sign up with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service if travelling to or residing in Mexico.
Due to high levels of organized crime and urban violence, Canadians should exercise extreme caution in the states of Baja California (North), Guerrero (including Acapulco), Nayarit, Michoacán, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz, Zacatecas and the areas in the state of Jalisco bordering the states of Michoacán and Zacatecas. The coastal area of Southern Nayarit, a popular destination among Canadians, remains relatively safe from Nuevo Vallarta to La Peñita de Jaltemba, as do the capital cities of San Luis Potosi, Veracruz and Zacatecas. You should however exercise extreme caution when travelling outside the urban tourist areas." http://travel.gc.ca/destinations/mexico

Most tourist areas are just as safe as any tourist destination in the USA. Just as you would in any other place, always be aware of your surroundings. Avoid Acapulco (from what I've heard recently but maybe things have changed)

Is it safe to travel to Mexico this year with kids?
Mexico is a popular tourist destination for families, and for good reason. The country offers a wealth of cultural experiences, beautiful beaches, and delicious food. However, there are some safety concerns that parents should be aware of before traveling to Mexico with children.
The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel warning for Mexico, citing concerns about crime and violence. The warning advises travelers to exercise increased caution in certain areas of the country, including:
- The states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacan, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas
- The cities of Acapulco, Cancun, Cozumel, Guadalajara, Mazatlan, Mexico City, Monterrey, and Tijuana
The State Department also advises travelers to be aware of the following safety concerns:
- Crime: Mexico has a high crime rate, including violent crime. Tourists should be aware of their surroundings and take precautions to avoid becoming victims of crime.
- Kidnapping: Kidnapping is a serious problem in Mexico. Tourists should be especially vigilant when traveling with children.
- Natural disasters: Mexico is prone to natural disasters, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and flooding. Tourists should be aware of the risks and take precautions to stay safe.
Despite these safety concerns, Mexico can be a safe place to travel with kids if you take the necessary precautions. Here are some tips for staying safe in Mexico with children:
- Stay informed: Before you travel, be sure to check the U.S. Department of State's travel warnings and advisories for Mexico. This will help you make informed decisions about where to travel and how to stay safe.
- Be aware of your surroundings: When you're out and about, be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to the people around you. Avoid walking alone at night, and be careful when using public transportation.
- Keep your valuables safe: Don't carry large amounts of cash or jewelry, and be sure to keep your passport and other important documents in a safe place.
- Stay in touch: Let your family and friends know your travel plans, and check in with them regularly. This will help them know that you're safe.
- Have a plan in case of an emergency: In the event of an emergency, know where to go and how to get help. Keep a list of emergency contacts with you at all times.
By following these tips, you can help ensure that you and your family have a safe and enjoyable trip to Mexico.
Which part of Mexico would you say is the safest?
According to the U.S. Department of State, the safest parts of Mexico for tourists are the:
- Yucatan Peninsula
- Baja California Sur
- Oaxaca
- Puebla
- Queretaro
These areas have relatively low crime rates and are generally considered to be safe for tourists. However, it's important to remember that no place is completely safe, and you should always take precautions to stay safe when traveling in Mexico.
