What should I do if my Philippine Airlines flight from JFK to YVR is cancelled?

Question:
Humans say...
John
do they offer accommodations, a credit or anything?
K.
write a letter, you'll likely get a credit of some sort
Keith
you are not entitled to nothing: they are supposed to put you on the next best available flight, of which there are plenty since they are interline partners with many big airlines. threaten to complain to the dept of transportation and do not accept them putting you on the next philippine airlines flight as acceptable
Kat
They are also refusing to do anything over the phone and are telling me I have to go in person tomorow?
Keith
you might have to go to the airport if you cant get ahold of canada/usa local ticketing during office hours
Parveen
PAL is partnered with ANA (that might be something to pressure them to do). PAL is unreliable, and never on time.
Marli
Given that is only in the last few years that this airline has been allowed International routes outside of Asia, it is in their best interest to accomodate you. I have had no issues with their reliability and timeliness in my three flights over two years, BTW. I would go in person and stand your ground.
Kat
My mom used her card to book the trip for us, I always book with cancellation insurance card. Parveen - who do you get your insurance through? Also thanks for the info guys!
Millie
That's why they name it PAL. Plane Always Late!!!
Parveen
BCAA. It is an add on. It is either added to my renter's insurance or my travel medical. I can't remember which, but you have to ask for it. I was surprised that it was so cheap. (Might be cheaper than what I posted).
The guy at BCAA when he was reading it out to me told me that even if a flight is delayed by X hours, they will cover taxi and meals back into the city. Have to read policy booklet again on the information

New info: plane was cancelled by JFK because of maintenance issues
John
okay that should give you what Keith said above: booking on next available flight on any airline or at very least some sort of credits etc
Keith
non-weather means you can complain for some compensation on top of getting rebooked
Parveen
If this was a flight going to the European union, you could potentially be awarded compensation but this is going to Canada and onwards to the Philippines so I don't think the same applies.
I am guessing PAL staff won't even be at the airport for very long to answer questions.
Kat
Okay so now pal is saying because jfk cancelled the flight, jfk will be the ones dealing with all the rebooking. Does this even make sense?
Keith
yes, that means call the jfk office tomorrow morning
John
it just might as they want to direct flow to their flights locally
Parveen
Katie Bricolage no it does not. Is this the staff at the airport saying this?
Kat
Again, thanks everyone for your advice / help
Kat
This is the customer care line saying this over the phone, so ticketing / reservations
Jay
philippine airlines
Kat
I guess I will just get up early tomorrow and head into the airport and try to deek it out with 100 other pissed off people, sigh. Avoid PAL I guess. Also while you're boarding they play terrible easy listening hits from the 80s and 90s over the intercom.... But the music is being played on pan flutes. Seriously, wtf.
John
well she learned her lesson on using that airline the hard way but just go out the airport it may turn around to where you get on an earlier flight with another interline carrier
Kat
I just want to thank everyone for their help. I stood my ground and pal has me on a flight back to vancouver shortly. It was a zoo at the airport but they were putting everyone up in a hotel for the night with meal vouchers who was delayed.
John
good news, but please do yourself a favor next time and use another airline
Keith
glad it worked out Katie
Kat
Further update for anyone who is interested: PAL is refunding the cost of our bags on delta and have given us enough mabuey miles for another one way flight to NYC.

Flight Cancellation Experience and Tips
Dealing with a flight cancellation can be a frustrating and stressful experience, but there are certain rights and strategies that can help you navigate the situation more effectively. In this blog post, we'll share some insights and advice based on the experience you described.
Your Rights as a Passenger
First and foremost, it's important to understand your rights as a passenger, especially when traveling to or from the United States. While you mentioned that you're "pretty sure" you're not entitled to anything since you're a USA citizen and the flight was canceled, this is not entirely accurate.
Under the U.S. Department of Transportation's rules, airlines are required to provide certain amenities to passengers in the event of a canceled flight, regardless of their citizenship or the airline's home country. These amenities may include:
- Rebooking on the next available flight, even if it's with a different airline
- Meal vouchers or accommodation (if the delay or cancellation requires an overnight stay)
- Compensation, depending on the length of the delay and the ticket price
Tips for Dealing with a Canceled Flight
Based on your situation, here are some tips that may help you get rebooked on a more convenient flight:
- Be proactive and patient. As soon as you become aware of the cancellation, start exploring alternative options and rebooking options. While dealing with the airline's customer service, remain calm and polite, as they are more likely to be helpful when faced with a cooperative passenger.
- Insist on being rebooked on another airline. As mentioned, airlines are required to rebook you on the next available flight, even if it's with a different carrier. Don't settle for a less convenient option if better alternatives exist.
- Request compensation or amenities. Depending on the circumstances, you may be entitled to meal vouchers, hotel accommodation, or even monetary compensation. Don't be afraid to politely ask for what you're owed.
- Explore alternative travel arrangements. If the airline is unable to provide a satisfactory solution, consider booking a new ticket with another airline or exploring other modes of transportation, such as trains or rental cars.
- Document everything. Keep records of all communications with the airline, including flight numbers, confirmation codes, and the names of the representatives you spoke with. This documentation can be helpful if you need to pursue further action or file a complaint.
Remember, while dealing with a flight cancellation can be frustrating, remaining calm and persistent can go a long way in getting the assistance and accommodations you deserve.

My flight from JFK > YVR on phillipine airlines just got cancelled that was suppose to leave tomorrow at 11am. They have me going now on a flight leaving Monday at 2:30am. Obviously this is not ideal and I am pretty sure because I am USA and the flight is cancelled I am entitled to nothing. I was told to talk to the customer care agent tomorrow at the airport to see if anything can be done. I am hoping they can get me on another airline. Any one had experience with this? Any advice?
