We have iphones with a Bell plan. Bell has monthly plans for Western Europe now. We paid $45 for 50 voice minutes and 200 texts. We added minimal data - $30 for 100MB. Probably not the cheapest, but easy and nice to use our own phones.

I picked up a local sim while I was there last year which was pretty cheap from what I remember.

I would download the app magic jack and whatsapp. There is wifi everywhere and you can call mobiles or landlines with magic jack and send text and Picture messages with whatsapp! Then it's free!! Get a package for those just in cases! I've travelled away for weeks at a time with no change in my plan- always keep it on airplane mode except for calls and you can still use wifi when on airplane!!

Exploring Phone Packages for Italy: Data, Voice, and Text Options
Planning a trip to Italy and wondering about the best phone package options? We've got you covered! Whether you're a frequent traveler or just visiting for a vacation, having a reliable and affordable phone package can make your Italian adventure much smoother.
International Roaming with Your Current Carrier
The easiest option is to check with your current mobile carrier about their international roaming plans for Italy. Many carriers offer temporary data, voice, and text packages specifically designed for travelers. However, these packages can be quite expensive, so it's essential to carefully review the costs and ensure they fit your budget and usage needs.
Local SIM Card Options
Alternatively, you can consider purchasing a local Italian SIM card upon arrival. This option is often more cost-effective, especially if you plan to stay for an extended period. Here are a few popular options:
1. TIM
TIM is one of the largest mobile network operators in Italy, offering various prepaid plans with data, voice, and text options. Their "TIM Tourist" plan is specifically designed for travelers, providing affordable rates and flexible top-up options.
2. Vodafone
Vodafone is another major Italian carrier with extensive coverage throughout the country. They offer prepaid SIM cards with customizable data, voice, and text packages, making it easy to tailor your plan to your needs.
3. Wind Tre
Wind Tre is a popular choice among budget-conscious travelers. Their prepaid SIM cards offer competitive rates for data, voice, and text, and you can top up your plan as needed during your stay.
Tips for Choosing the Best Option
- Consider the duration of your stay and your estimated usage to determine the most cost-effective option.
- Research the coverage maps of different carriers to ensure reliable service in the areas you plan to visit.
- Compare the rates for data, voice, and text packages across multiple providers to find the best deal.
- If purchasing a local SIM card, ensure your phone is unlocked and compatible with Italian networks.
No matter which option you choose, having a reliable phone package will help you stay connected, navigate with ease, and capture those unforgettable Italian moments without worrying about exorbitant roaming charges.
Buon viaggio! (Have a great trip!)
