Hello All. I am leaving to Europpe in a few days and have a question re: Telus roaming plan. I want to get the unlimited calling and texting one but am wondering if people who are in Europe, and will call/text me will they still get charged international fees then?

They probably will since its still long distance for them to call you.

I'd get a phone over there. They r cheap. It costs a fortune on north American plans over there. We did a text only plan and it was ok but no phone calls.

I've heard it's more convenient to just purchase a new SIM card and a basic european phone plan when you get there!

For texting there were no extra fees

Calling you from Europe have a charge. I suggest to have unlock phone and buy simcard there. For 15 to 20 Euro you have sim, airtime, text and web access. (Buy one for each country). I do see in the Plane that they do sell international sim that will work in all European country, I forget the price but it might be around $80 dollars.

I usually get a local sim when I travel but they can be a bit costly still depending on how long you're in a country

Call Telus and see what they say. I had a text and voice plan for Europe added to my Bell iphone. It acted like a local phone. No charges in Europe. No cost for European numbers to call me. Long distance to North America was free for me. I am not sure about Canadians calling me while I was there. Texting was no charge.

I found the plans quite reasonably priced now (not like the costly past). I liked having my own phone with all my contacts, apps, etc. on it. Very handy. Data is very useful for using the map apps while walking around cities, etc.

$45.00 for a 30 day plan through Bell. (Just did it today). 60 minutes of talk, 200 outgoing text, unlimited incoming text.

Leave it on airplane mode

If you buy the plan, no need for airplane mode. There are no roaming charges at all. You must watch your data use, though. But I received a text indicating I was getting close to using up my data.

IMO, data is much more important than texting/ calling these days..

Get ur phone unlocked then buy a SIM card from where you are going, I did that going to Ireland, it was a lot cheaper, no worries about a huge bill when u get back

Is there a SIM you can get loaded with a good amount of data that will work everywhere?

They will be charged international fees.

Where are you landing? Telus roaming is expensive. Better off (if landing in the UK) to get the 3 UK £15 pre paid sim, as it gives unlimited data in the uk, and 25 GB of roaming to 16 or 17 countries including france and italy.

Is there an equivalent prepaid SIM that's available in other countries? Or are there options to order and have the SIM delivered? I'm going to Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland and would like to have data as I travel

I called telus they don't know if people who call me from within Europe will be charged international fees (it's free for outgoing and incoming calls to Canada). I will call again to confirm with Telus. I am going to multiple countries as well and would prefer to have one sim card instead of buying a different one each time.

Josh

Szymon, where is your first destination?

Calvin, if there is I haven't found it yet. Multiple sims is a pain in the ass, but if you pre-research different companies you can get great, cheap value compared to roaming -- and often faster network connections too.

The people calling you from Europe have charge unless they are subcribe to one of those VOIP or unlimited international call.

I bought a burner phone there and some minutes

Telus has 3 different plans. I took the $150 per month one - no roaming charges, 150 min, unlimited texting & 800MG.

I ended up getting the Viber app so when I had wifi I could call and text anyone with the app for free.

Even landlines and cell phones in canada?

Profile picture of Amanda

They have to have the app, Szymon. That being said you can't call landlines. You're calling the person via the app. Worked great for my purposes and a lot cheaper than any package a cell provider could offer.

Thank you everyone for the input. I think I will try to get the international simcard at the airport or just load up more money in Poland and use it around Europe since within EU countries the fees are not that high

Two apps that are free for texting and are Wi-fi based meaning there are no roaming fees from anywhere..just need Wi-fi....Text Plus..This app will allow you send and receive texts without the people you text having to have same app....other one is Whatsapp...this one would require that anyone that you want to text would have to have the app...no problem but a pain in the ass if you have lots of people you wish to stay in contact with.
