Personally I'd go hakuba valley over niseko, but if you're going to the other ski hill in hokkaido then I have no idea. I just find hakuba has a bunch more to offer

Karl if it was Nagano, then Hakuba is a must go

Rusutsu resort was my favourite spot. We did Niseko and Hakuba as well on the same trip. Awesome glades, good snow, not too crowded. I would compare Rusutsu to Mt Baker vs the Whistler type resorts of Niseko and Hakuba

I've skiid a fair bit of hokkaido, but niseko is the general spot. I tend to hit kokusai as it has easily accessible and safe off piste.

We live in Whistler and did our first trip to ski Japan last season....... so amazing we booked again for this coming season! We are staying only on Hokkaido this trip because the quality and quantity of snow is better from our experience. Depending on the kind of terrain you want to ski. Hakuba and surrounds were the bigger more challenging mountains we are more used to. Niseko not as challenging but the snow quality and amount was far better. Rusutsu was outstanding. This next trip we are staying at Furano to road trip to some smaller resorts, Rusutsu & Kiroro. If you do go to Hakuba, make the trip to Cortina. We had a huge dump of snow and it was fantastic!

The Ultimate Ski Trip Guide: Australia to Hokkaido, Japan

Planning a ski trip from Australia to Japan's stunning Hokkaido region in January is an adventure like no other. With its world-class powder, breathtaking landscapes, and unique cultural experiences, Hokkaido promises an unforgettable experience for you and your friends. Here's everything you need to know to make the most of your week-long ski getaway.

Sick Riding Spots in Hokkaido

Hokkaido is a powder paradise, and here are some of the top ski resorts you should consider:

  1. Niseko United: This is arguably the most famous ski area in Hokkaido, comprising four interconnected resorts (Niseko Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu, and Hanazono). It's renowned for its light, dry powder and stunning mountain scenery.
  2. Rusutsu Resort: Offering a diverse range of terrain for all skill levels, Rusutsu is a fantastic choice for families and groups with varying abilities. Its slopes are known for their excellent grooming and breathtaking views of Mount Yotei.
  3. Furano Resort: With its wide-open bowls, immaculate grooming, and stunning scenery, Furano is a top pick for advanced skiers and snowboarders. It's also famous for its incredible night skiing experience.

Booking Cheap Flights

To score the best deals on flights from Australia to Japan, consider the following tips:

  • Be flexible with your travel dates and look for mid-week flights, as they tend to be cheaper than weekends.
  • Use flight search engines like Skyscanner or Google Flights to compare prices across different airlines and dates.
  • Consider stopovers or multi-city flights, as they can sometimes be more affordable than direct flights.
  • Book your flights well in advance, typically 2-3 months before your intended travel dates.

Must-See Places in Hokkaido

While you're in Hokkaido, be sure to explore some of the region's incredible attractions beyond the slopes:

  • Otaru Canal: This picturesque canal in the city of Otaru is lined with historic warehouses and offers a glimpse into Hokkaido's past as a bustling port town.
  • Lake Toya: This iconic caldera lake is surrounded by stunning natural scenery and offers opportunities for hot spring bathing and scenic hikes.
  • Sapporo Snow Festival: If your trip coincides with this annual event (typically in early February), make sure to visit Sapporo to witness the impressive snow and ice sculptures.

With proper planning and an adventurous spirit, your ski trip from Australia to Hokkaido, Japan, promises to be an unforgettable experience filled with powder-covered slopes, stunning landscapes, and unique cultural encounters.
