Hello,
looking at traveling to Portugal and Spain late Oct to early Nov. Has one visited these 2 countries at that time? Just looking for feed back on whether things are closed, places to see, transportation ideas or anything anyone would to share regarding their experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Was in Mallorca mid-October a few years ago and it was pretty quiet (was weird with these places meant to seat tons of people sitting empty), but Barcelona was bustling. I’m sure depends on the specific place you are going there.

Following. Thinking to walk the Camino Dos Faros in December. Anyone done it?

I would recommend staying somewhere with heating (many places don't have heating, you need to specifically check). Even in the south it gets cold at night and inside can feel very humid and chilly. We lived in Portugal for 2 years, the weather can be changeable at that time of year but the sun is rarely far away, lots of places are lovely, southern Spain is usually warm but can be very windy depending on where you are

Charlott thank you. Good to know about the heat and wind.

I walked Camino Portuguese from Porto in October 2022. Portugal is very chill. Spain however follows rigid hours (siesta) and some stores are closed on Sundays. Be sure you have provisions. Enjoy your trip. I used GO CITY in Barcelona to save money on entrances and attractions. Dont miss out on Montserrat. So worth it for a daytrip.

Anonymou Lastly, if Sagrada de Familia is in your list of places to visit in Barcelona. Be sure to book tickets way in advance (48 hours), as they sell out.

Thank you so much!

Traveling to Portugal and Spain in Late Fall

Late October to early November can be a wonderful time to visit Portugal and Spain. While the peak tourist season may have passed, the cooler temperatures and fewer crowds make it an ideal time to explore these beautiful countries. Here are some insights based on personal experiences and recommendations:

Weather and Clothing

The weather in Portugal and Spain during this period can be quite pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F). However, it's important to pack layers as the evenings can be cooler, and there's always a chance of rain showers. Bring a light jacket, sweater, and comfortable walking shoes.

Attractions and Activities

Most major attractions and museums in Portugal and Spain remain open during the late fall months, although some may have reduced hours or be closed on certain days. Here are a few highlights:

  • Portugal: Visit the historic cities of Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra. Explore the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower in Lisbon, take a port wine tour in Porto, and wander through the charming streets of Coimbra.
  • Spain: Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Madrid and Barcelona. Admire the architectural wonders like the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and the Royal Palace in Madrid. Don't miss the stunning Alhambra in Granada and the mesmerizing Mezquita in Córdoba.

Transportation

Both countries have excellent transportation systems, making it easy to explore multiple cities and regions. Here are some options:

  • Trains: High-speed trains like Renfe in Spain and Comboios de Portugal offer a convenient and comfortable way to travel between major cities.
  • Buses: Bus networks, such as Alsa in Spain and Rede Expressos in Portugal, provide affordable and frequent connections to smaller towns and villages.
  • Rental Cars: Renting a car can be a great option for those seeking more flexibility and the ability to explore remote areas at their own pace.

Cultural Events and Festivals

While the peak festival season may have passed, there are still plenty of cultural events and celebrations happening in late fall:

  • Portugal: The Magusto festival in northern Portugal, celebrating the new wine and chestnut harvest, takes place in November.
  • Spain: The Día de Todos los Santos (All Saints' Day) is celebrated on November 1st, with many traditional processions and events.

Whether you're drawn to the rich history, stunning architecture, vibrant culture, or delectable cuisine, Portugal and Spain offer an unforgettable experience in the late fall. Embrace the temperate weather, fewer crowds, and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the authentic local way of life.
