Do you need a NZeTA visa to transit through New Zealand?

Question:

PSA even if you’re just transiting through New Zealand, you still need to get a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) visa. They won’t even let you check in at Pearson without it. $20 NZD per person for the pleasure of passing through their airport.
Found out the hard way but thankfully was able to (very stressfully) resolve without missing any flights.

Just a heads up too, if you are using Jetstar as any of your flight plans, change it. They are terrible to deal with and their carry on luggage rules are terrible.

Daniel by terrible do you mean they actually enforce the rules? The UK airlines enforce too I am in favor of that.

Pauline No. co share with air canada with carry on with a 22KG not checked to their 7KG including my backpack. Then not getting my prepaid bulkhead seat, and trying to be charged 25 dollars per kilo over weight on our luggage. We were trying to move some items back for our daughter who was returning after living there so we were trying to get as much back for her. Cancelled connecting flights that made us stay a night in Japan and do all the entry requirements. Then asking for an upgrade on the flight and told it was fully booked but several seats in the next class of seats were empty on the flight. No compensation for me was the decision after many hours on online chats with several issues. And I could go on..

Daniel if I were to take the advice of all the people who said “don’t fly with X airline” I wouldn’t have been to most of the countries I’ve been to.

Daniel All Australian airlines have similar carry on rules, they're all very strict on size and weight.

Alysha only a small portion of my complaints far too many to post here, but if you enjoy using them, I hope the flights all work out for you. Having a connecting flight put off to the next day is not a lot of fun. No compensation given or offered.

Daniel again, none of that is uncommon for Australian airlines. They don’t offer compensation like here or Europe.

And to get out of New Zealand into Australia, you need to show the Oz visa. We were told "it automatically attaches to your passport" to enter Oz but needed the receipt on my phone in NZ.

This is common for countries that you need visas to enter. The same goes for Canada and US. If a person needs a visa to enter Canada, then they would need one for a connecting flight too.

Always double check stuff like that- recently refused boarding by an AA rep using wrong Covid info for Jordan. Went to next counter and had no issue. Clearly a case of someone throwing their weight around as the same rep had already turned others away for minor issues he was too lazy to solve

PSA, make sure you have all the proper documentation for every aspect of your trip before you get to the airport. If in doubt perhaps use a travel professional.

Thanks, good to know.

A small island in the middle of nowhere. Why would anyone get a transit visa through there ( tickets would most likely be more expensive unless of course you want to stay in the country for a day or 2 ,if that's the case a small transit fee shouldn't hurt)

Air NZ often has reasonably priced flights to Australia and their hub is in Auckland

We just got back from New Zealand/ Australia. It’s pretty common to have to pay to get into a country. People have to pay to come to Canada if your not a citizen.
If you have traveled to New Zealand you would know they are very strict with their Bio limitations into their country for a very good reason. This is to stop things like our terrible tree disease like the “Emerald Ash Borer” which kills tons of trees here.
This stuff requires extra employees at airport to ensure their country is safe from foreign issues. Some of this $20 go towards this program.
I was a little taken back from the charge as well but then I looked into it and it made sense. Hope this helps

PSA: New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) Visa Required

Attention travelers: Even if you are only transiting through New Zealand, you must obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) visa. Failure to do so will result in being denied boarding at the airport.

The NZeTA visa costs $20 NZD per person and is required for all visitors to New Zealand, including transit passengers. This requirement applies to all nationalities, except Australian and New Zealand passport holders.

To obtain a NZeTA visa, you must complete an online application form. The process typically takes a few hours, but can take up to 72 hours during peak season. It is recommended to apply for your visa well in advance of your travel date.

Once you have obtained your NZeTA visa, you will receive an electronic travel authority (ETA) which will be linked to your passport. You must present your ETA when checking in for your flight to New Zealand.

I recently learned this the hard way when I was denied boarding at Pearson Airport because I did not have a NZeTA visa. I was able to resolve the issue (very stressfully) without missing any flights, but it was a close call.

Don't make the same mistake I did. Make sure to obtain your NZeTA visa before traveling to New Zealand, even if you are only transiting through the country.

Here are some additional tips for obtaining a NZeTA visa:

  • Apply for your visa early, especially if you are traveling during peak season.
  • Have your passport number, travel dates, and credit card information ready when you apply.
  • Make sure to answer all of the questions on the application form accurately.
  • Once you have submitted your application, you will receive an email confirmation. Keep this email for your records.
  • If you have any questions about the NZeTA visa, you can contact the New Zealand Immigration Service at +64 9 914 4100.
