Looking for some advice for travelling to Japan, not only for sight-seeing, but also skiing. Has anyone done it all in 2 weeks? Where is the best place to start and finish?

You can definitely do top to bottom in 2 weeks. The JR rail pass is an amazing thing. I did 3 weeks and went all over the main island. But, i spent an entire week in Osaka and several days in Nagoya area. So I'm sure you could easily go Hokkaido to Okiniwa in a couple weeks.

For a snowboard trip in Japan in 9 nights / 10 days my itinerary was:.
3 nights: Tokyo
2 nights: High speed train to the Nagano area (to check out the snow monkeys) + skiing at Nozowaonsen
4 nights: Flew to Sapporo (CTS) from MMJ. Checked out Sapporo + skiing at Niseko and Rusutsu, plus flew back to Tokyo for the flight home.
So I would say 7 nights minimum just for checking out Tokyo + skiing + potentially getting back to Tokyo. But it depends on how much skiing you want to do
Leaves you with another 6-7 nights for maybe 2 other places?
I think there's a lot of ground to cover when it comes to Japan, and trying to see it all in 2 weeks even without a ski trip would be pretty tough.

We are going Feb 1 to 10 to ski with Altus Guides and then tour around for 2 weeks. Check their website.

We did two weeks in Japan last year. We did 4 days Tokyo then bullet train to Kyoto for 4 days. Then bullet train to Osaka (I think), where we flew to Sapporo and rented a car (this day was busy but went without a hitch). Skied the most amazing snow ever at Moiwa lodge. Stayed 4 days then flew back to Tokyo and on to Calgary. It was a perfect amount of city, culture and skiing.

We shipped our skis on ahead to Hokkaido when we landed in Tokyo. It's a great system.

I don’t think we debited but we did use our bank cards to take out cash at the ATMs in the 711.

Travelling to Japan for Sight-Seeing and Skiing

If you're looking to experience both sight-seeing and skiing in Japan within a two-week timeframe, it is definitely doable! Japan offers a unique blend of cultural experiences, natural beauty, and world-class ski resorts that will make your trip unforgettable.

Best Places to Visit for Sight-Seeing and Skiing

One of the best places to start your trip is in Tokyo, Japan's bustling capital city. Explore the vibrant neighborhoods, visit historic temples, and indulge in delicious Japanese cuisine. From Tokyo, you can easily travel to nearby ski resorts such as Hakuba Valley or Gala Yuzawa for some incredible skiing and snowboarding.

After Tokyo, consider heading to Kyoto to immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture. Visit ancient temples, stroll through picturesque gardens, and experience a traditional tea ceremony. From Kyoto, you can also access ski resorts in the nearby Kansai region.

Tips for a Successful Trip

When planning your trip, be sure to allocate enough time for both sight-seeing and skiing. Consider purchasing a Japan Rail Pass for convenient and cost-effective transportation between cities and ski resorts.

It's also important to pack appropriately for your trip, especially if you plan on skiing. Make sure to bring warm clothing, waterproof gear, and plenty of layers to stay comfortable on the slopes.

Conclusion

Travelling to Japan for sight-seeing and skiing in two weeks is a fantastic adventure that will allow you to experience the best of both worlds. By starting in Tokyo and exploring nearby ski resorts, followed by a visit to Kyoto and its surrounding ski areas, you can create a well-rounded itinerary that showcases the beauty and diversity of Japan.
