Looking for recommendations. I have 3 weeks this summer. Would like to travel to a city in Europe that has a great subway and bus system for exploring. Mom and 17 year old daughter traveling together. TIA

Budapest is a great city to explore and it is one of the less expensive cities as well. Great food and friendly people too. There is metro, tram and also public bikes for rent at a lot of the metro stations .

Been to both, both are amazing cities. How about a road trip? Prague-Vienna-Bratislava-Budapest?

I did this trip 20 years ago with my mum in tow and we had an absolute blast... add Salzburg into the mix

I would also highly recommend this. Bratislava is very underrated in my opinion and Budapest and Prague are also amazing cities. Although I know many people love Vienna I could take it or leave it — it’s just so overrun with tourists compared to the others, so I’d spend the least time there of the 4.

Trafalgar Tours has some good city stays for places like London and Paris. Good hotels in good locations as well as a few included excursions like introductory city tours. Lots of free time for exploration. Both have great public transportation systems and tons of things to see and do.

Budapest would be my choice. It is relatively inexpensive especially in comparison to other European capitols. Berlin is another fables city with a great transit system and tons to explore. If you have questions abit Budapest pm me as I lived there for a year and can answer questions for you.

Berlin would be my other top pick (after Budapest — see previous comment). You could do a Berlin - Dresden - Prague mix as well.

Thanks so much for all the great suggestions!! Leaning towards Budapest/Prague. A bit nervous of the driving in Europe but perhaps can get trains easily enough to various cities if we move a bit.

Not a comment on cities, but check out Hostelworld for accommodation. A private room with 2 beds is a very cheap option. Check reviews carefully. One that allows children will be more quiet. Another thing to look at is free tours. Google that for any city you choose. world nomads has good prices for travel insurance.

Most larger European cities have free walking tours - we have used trains and buses for intercity travel and also flown with discount airlines - norwegian air is excellent and Wizz Air is fine - if you can get by with carry on - Seville is a beautiful city, also Lisbon. Depends on what you want to see - maybe consider Malta which is gorgeous and very easy to get around on their extensive bus network - depends on what your interests are!! For accommodation we had good luck using Booking.ca - just read the reviews - Eastern Europe except Dubrovnik seems very reasonable for both food and accommodation - have fun!

Here are our top recommendations for cities with great subway and bus networks, perfect for your mother-daughter getaway.

London, United Kingdom

The iconic city of London offers an unparalleled blend of history, culture, and modern amenities. With its extensive Underground (tube) system and efficient bus network, navigating the city is a breeze. From the majestic Buckingham Palace to the eclectic markets of Camden Town, London has something for everyone. Its efficient public transportation system, including the U-Bahn (subway) and an extensive bus network, makes exploring the city a breeze. Immerse yourself in the city's incredible street art, visit the iconic Berlin Wall Memorial, and indulge in the delicious local cuisine. Berlin's diverse neighborhoods, from the trendy Kreuzberg to the historic Mitte, offer a unique experience at every turn.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona, the cosmopolitan heart of Catalonia, is a city that captivates with its stunning architecture, vibrant culture, and Mediterranean charm. The city's efficient metro system and extensive bus routes make it easy to navigate the winding streets and explore the iconic Gaudi masterpieces, such as the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell.
