How Much Does a One-Way Car Rental from Austria to Italy Cost for a Summer Vacation?

Question:

Good morning. We are looking at driving from Austria through Italy next summer. Wondering about the car rental fees for a one way trip; picking up in Salzburg and leaving car in Florence for example vs a round trip. Anyone know what the $ damage might be? Thanks in advance ?

I have experience in Canada or the US, but you are going from one country to another. I'm sure it's a lot more. Just call Hertz or whatever and ask them.

We went to Italy and Germany last Fall and wanted to do the same thing. Unfortunately, once you cross borders the charge is outrageous (~$800) on top of you regular rental fee.
We ended up renting / driving all through Italy. We left the car in Venice and trained to Germany. Once we were in Germany we trained everywhere - their train system was amazing.

Thanks! I had a feeling this would be the challenge. Appreciate your feedback. We want a car in Austria and a car in Italy but I wonder if it's worth it to look at taking the rail between the two and renting separately in both places. Food for thought! Cheers.

We did a car rental in Austria - picked up from one city and left it in another (still in Austria) and it was about $100 for 3 days or so. The cost to drive it from Austria to Germany was astronomical. It would be well worth it probably to fly between the 2 places and rent separately in each country.

We rented in Caen and Marseilles,France last year. I wrestled for eons trying to get info on-line and finally talked to a travel agent at AMA who booked everything through some Europe central booking agency. Excellent service and everything came off without any problems. Wish I had gone to AMA in the first place. We didn't do the 'one way trip' drop-off but I think AMA could answer your questions quite easily, if you are a member. Curious what you find out as we want to do a similar trip soon as well.

Thanks. I may have to consult an expert. I usually book all my own travel but it's a whole new ball game with Europe and the plane, trains and automobile questions. If I get any new info I will post

if you need assistance let me know. I've booked lots of stuff through Europe. Usually booking trains is easiest when you get there, a day or 2 before you want to leave.

Lauren thanks. ? Last time I travelled Europe it was just me. This time it's with kids in tow so I'm trying to figure out what's going to work best for family friendly travel. Cheers.

We have leased and rented a few times in Europe. Dropping off at a different location will be $500 - $800. But your insurance is expensive, make sure you have that included and in your final cost. Leasing is less expensive but you have to keep the car for a minimum of 21 days.

take the train enjoy the ride...

I agree with Mike. Can't beat the trains in Europe. We used train for longer distances and rented the cars I mentioned earlier, or rode bicycles, to travel locally.

One Way Car Rental from Austria to Italy: What to Expect

Planning a road trip from Austria to Italy can be an exciting adventure, but it's crucial to consider the logistics, especially when it comes to car rentals. One-way rentals can be more expensive than round-trip options, but the convenience and flexibility they offer can be worth the extra cost for many travelers.

Rental Fees for a One-Way Trip

The rental fees for a one-way trip from Salzburg, Austria, to Florence, Italy, can vary significantly depending on several factors, including:

  • Rental Company: Different rental companies have different pricing policies for one-way rentals. Some may charge a flat fee, while others calculate the fee based on the distance traveled or the drop-off location.
  • Pick-up and Drop-off Locations: The locations where you pick up and drop off the car can impact the fee. Cross-border rentals often incur additional charges.
  • Rental Period: The longer the rental period, the higher the overall cost will be.
  • Vehicle Type: The type of vehicle you rent (economy, compact, SUV, etc.) will also affect the rental fee.

As a rough estimate, you can expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $600 or more for a one-way rental from Salzburg to Florence, depending on the factors mentioned above.

Round-Trip vs. One-Way Rental

In general, round-trip rentals are often more cost-effective than one-way rentals. The reason for this is that rental companies often charge a substantial drop-off fee for one-way rentals, especially when crossing international borders.

However, if your travel plans involve visiting multiple destinations in different countries, a one-way rental can provide greater convenience and flexibility, potentially offsetting the additional cost.

Tips for Saving Money on One-Way Rentals

  1. Book Early: Booking your rental car well in advance can help you secure better rates and avoid last-minute surcharges.
  2. Shop Around: Compare rates from different rental companies and consider joining their loyalty programs for potential discounts.
  3. Check for Promotions: Keep an eye out for seasonal promotions or coupon codes that can help you save on your rental.
  4. Consider Alternative Drop-Off Locations: If possible, explore alternative drop-off locations within a reasonable distance from your final destination to reduce the drop-off fee.

While one-way rentals may come with a higher price tag, the convenience and flexibility they offer can be invaluable for certain travel itineraries. By doing your research, booking early, and exploring cost-saving strategies, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your travel needs and budget.
