Can flight prices really double overnight?

March
Question:
Humans say...
Geoff
And the kicker...I keep getting emails from air canada telling me Europe is on sale, book now before May 2! So ironic!
Marcel
can happen probably try refreshing your cash in your browser or use another device you have not used to book
Marcel
every time a person books the same flight less seats also so the price can go up that way also
Geoff
Thanks, tried, no change. Just can't believe how much it went up. All dates +/- a week are the same. Can't be that many people who just booked all at the same time! Prices into the other big 3 airports in Europe didn't change (i.e., London, Amsterdam, etc.)
Marcel
well have you looked at something like Paris and flying out of Amsterdam or vice versa bit more for the train but could save you some $
Jennifer
what are your exact dates?
Jennifer
If you leave Aug 03rd and return Aug 30, air transat is $924CDN. Direct flight there, 2 stops (YYZ and YYC) on the way back
Jennifer
If you leave Aug 3rd and return Sep 02, it's $919 CDN , non-stop both ways. If you can swing it date-wise, I'd go for the non-stop flights. https://www.google.ca/flights/...

If you fly out of Vancouver instead of Victoria - air transat has a return flight for $848

Todd
....or... you could fly from Victoria into London for $826

and then fly London to Paris for $83

Try going incognito. Under the menu bar in your browser.

Try Air France.ca directly...I booked for a month and it was Vancouver to Biarritz and then Paris to Vancouver for 920$ for October..and last night I was looking to see and BA also has some very good fares..I've just been using the direct websites now
Pete
Vancouver to Paris...June 18 to Sept 11...Air France...$799..
Alyssa
yes. the price can double over night. or over an hour. or even a 10 minute window.
Lauren
Yes it can. Delete cookies and go incognito. If you have a different device go to another wifi access point different from where you saw original fare.
Graham
I agree with Lauren ...once they store your cookies they know it's you returning and they think they have a live one. Kind of like lost leaders or bait & switch tactics. Happened to me more than once til i figured it out..use a dif computer/access the second time.
Chris
True!!
Geoff
Thanks all for the suggestions. I use a combination of momondo, sky scanner, google flights and ita matrix (to build unique itineraries..) for pricing. The AC flights were our preferred and cheapest at the time, but yes still other options for a not a ton more money. I'm sure we'll figure something out. Cheers.
Tanja
that happened to me this past March. So frustrating! We didn't end up going.

See Myth #3: http://yvrdeals.com/travel-booking-myths-that-just-wont-die
Myth #3 - "Travel websites track the searches you make, and then raise the prices on you to encourage you to buy if you search multiple times! Use a different computer or 'incognito mode' or private browser mode so they can't track you and the price will go back down!"
The reality is that it's usually a discrepancy between the 'cached' price and the 'live' price. Travel sites use cached prices, because it's not technically possible to always display the live prices, until the user gets deeper into the booking process, and the travel website can then retrieve the live or 'real' price from the airline, tour operator, etc.
In some cases, it's possible the cached price really was lower than the live price. There are plenty of cases where the cached price never really existed though, and was never truly bookable.
But this myth will continue to persist, as from the web surfer's point of view it sure does feel like bait and switch, or that the website 'knows you must really want that flight and is raising the price on you intentionally'.

37 million Canadians and 17,800 seats availibility. Yup it's possible that the first 600 discounted seats have sold and the rest are expensive seats for sale

Victoria to Paris in August: Unexpected Price Increase
I'm planning a trip to Paris in August with 3 friends, and I was excited to find a great deal on flights from Victoria to Paris for $978 per person. I booked the flights for all 4 of us, and the total came to $3,912. However, when I clicked through to pay, the price jumped to $1,800 per person, for a total of $7,200!
I was shocked and disappointed. I checked multiple consolidators, and they're all showing the new flight price now too. Can the price really double overnight?
I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to pay $1,800 per person for flights, but I also don't want to lose the money I've already paid. I'm hoping that someone can help me.
Possible reasons for the price increase
There are a few possible reasons why the price of your flights may have increased overnight:
- The airline may have released a limited number of seats at the lower price, and those seats have now sold out.
- The demand for flights to Paris in August may have increased, which could have caused the airline to raise the price.
- There may have been a mistake in the original pricing, and the airline has now corrected it.
What to do if the price of your flights has increased
If the price of your flights has increased, there are a few things you can do:
- Contact the airline and ask if there is anything they can do to help. They may be able to offer you a discount or a refund.
- Try to find a cheaper flight on a different airline or on a different date.
- If you have travel insurance, you may be able to file a claim to recoup the difference in price.
I hope this helps. Good luck!
