you should be able to book this trip online using points, but a word of warning would be that if you're going to use aeroplan 'miles' do not fly on air canada as you will find the 'fees' and 'taxes' will nearly cost you the same as a retail ticket.

Hi Andrea
If you are using points to travel you should book as soon as possible as some points programs only allot a certain number of seats....call whoever you have points with and book it directly with them.

I have all three but I was thinking of transferring the points to aeroplan...seems like its not a very good idea though!

aeroplan can be used, just make sure you book your flights on a carrier other than AC as you'll save a ton of money in bogus 'fees'. Try a dummy booking and see the difference

Using Points Programs to Book Flights to Australia

If you're a frequent traveler and have been accumulating points through various loyalty programs such as TD Travel, American Express, or Aeroplan, you may have considered using those points to book a flight to Australia. The good news is that it's entirely possible, and many travelers have successfully done so.

The Process

The process of using points to book a flight to Australia is generally straightforward, but it does require some planning and research. Here are the typical steps involved:

  1. Check your points balance: First, log in to your account and check how many points you have available. This will help you determine if you have enough points to cover the entire flight or if you need to supplement with cash.
  2. Search for available flights: Most loyalty programs have online search tools that allow you to search for flights using points. Look for flights to major Australian cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Perth. Keep in mind that availability may be limited, especially during peak travel seasons.
  3. Compare options: Once you've found available flights, compare the different options in terms of dates, times, routes, and the number of points required. Look for the best value and the option that fits your travel plans.
  4. Book your flight: If you've found a suitable option, go ahead and book your flight using your points. You may need to pay additional taxes and fees, but these are usually significantly lower than the cost of a regular ticket.

When to Book for October Departure

If you're planning to travel to Australia in October, it's generally recommended to book your flight as early as possible. October falls within Australia's spring season and is considered a popular time to visit, especially for those planning to explore the country's natural attractions or attend events like the Melbourne Cup.

Ideally, you should start looking for available flights and comparing options at least 6-9 months in advance. This will give you the best chance of finding availability and securing the best possible deal using your points.

Keep in mind that availability and pricing can vary depending on your specific travel dates, departure city, and the airline or alliance you're using. It's always a good idea to be flexible with your travel dates if possible, as this can increase your chances of finding a suitable flight option using your points.

Using points programs to book flights to Australia can be an excellent way to save money on your travel expenses. With proper planning and flexibility, you can enjoy a memorable trip Down Under without breaking the bank.
