Question:

Hi all, I'm looking to go to either Japan/Korea or somewhere in Europe, but am really flexible. I'm wondering if you guys have any recommendations on places to go? Ideally I want to go backpacking and avoid tourist traps.

I'd go to the local library and pick up some Lonely Planets and start reading.

We did South Korea for a month last October. Didn't find anything too touristy other than Jeju Island, and even that was nice. Did a week in Seoul and two days in Busan, but other than that we did a lot in the countryside where there really weren't any tourists. If I were to go to Europe, I would go to Czech Republic. Cheap, and no tourists outside of Prague.

"somewhere" sounded kind of vague.. when? hot? cold? culture? beaches? Hiking?

croatia has a lot of everything but not knowing where you have been before.
the Camino de Santiago I think is a fabulous walking trail where you can combine it all.

Backpacking Adventures: Avoiding Tourist Traps

Choosing between Japan/Korea or somewhere in Europe can be a tough decision, but both destinations offer incredible opportunities for backpacking and immersing yourself in unique cultures. Here are some recommendations to help you avoid tourist traps and experience these regions like a local.

Japan/Korea

If you're drawn to the mystique of the East, consider venturing off the beaten path in Japan and South Korea. While cities like Tokyo and Seoul are iconic, they can also be crowded and expensive. Instead, explore the stunning natural landscapes and quaint villages that offer a more authentic experience.

  • Japan: Head to the Japanese Alps and hike the Nakasendo Trail, an ancient samurai route that winds through historic post towns and pristine mountain scenery. The remote Iya Valley in Shikoku is also a hidden gem, known for its vine bridges and traditional thatched-roof villages.
  • South Korea: Escape the hustle of Seoul and journey to the picturesque Jeju Island, famous for its volcanic landscapes, hiking trails, and black sand beaches. The mountainous regions of Seoraksan National Park and Jirisan National Park offer stunning vistas and opportunities for trekking.

Europe

Europe is a backpacker's paradise, with countless off-the-beaten-path destinations that offer a glimpse into local life and culture. Consider these lesser-known gems for an authentic European adventure:

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina: This Balkan country is often overlooked, but it boasts stunning natural beauty, rich history, and welcoming locals. Explore the medieval villages of Lukomir and Počitelj, hike through the Lukomir Highlands, and marvel at the iconic Stari Most bridge in Mostar.
  • Slovenia: With its diverse landscapes, Slovenia is a backpacker's dream. Hike through the Julian Alps, explore the stunning Skocjan Caves, and visit the charming coastal town of Piran. Don't miss the opportunity to explore the capital, Ljubljana, with its vibrant riverfront and café culture.

Wherever you decide to go, remember to embrace local customs, respect the environment, and immerse yourself in the culture. Happy backpacking!
