Question:

Vania
Always lots to see in New York, although 10 days there might not be so cheap if you include accomodation.
Sarah
Best of Luck to you. Most places are pretty good at English so don't get put off and there are always people around who will help. Brave move...Go for it!
Susan
Its a bit far but New Zealand is dead easy, very safe and friendly. Ditto Australia. London? Always lots to do there.
Nicole
Agree! NZ and Oz. Super safe, beautiful, friendly people
James
I spent a month in NZ for my first solo trip. Great people, lots to do and easy to get around.
Sheila
Following....I have been looking into all inclusive holidays to start some have 'deals ' for solo travellers. I felt safe in London on my own even on the subway at night...it is always busy!
Debbie
Ireland is fantastic also!
Jerilyn
camino de santiago in Spain- November would be cold though and you'd need about 35 days but you should google it. I'm going solo next year!
Laura
Some spots left for our all levels Yoga Retreat in November on an island in Mexico...hmu if you have questions! https://www.facebook.com/ljaburrows/posts/10159286432645058
Susan
Havana is very nice as well, but perhaps not right now
Mike
Do a Contiki Tour if you're under 35. If over 35 do a Rick Steve's Tour. I did a solo trip with Contiki and it was the best experience of my life. I booked a solo room so I had my alone time, and then cliques form within the larger group. You can choose to latch on one day or just do your own thing another. I can't recommend it enough.
Hannah
Agree^
Debbie
I did a 2 week Royal Irish tour solo. Met some amazing people on my trip. Definitely pay extra for the solo room....worth getting. Great tour, lovely scenery, accommodations and meals!!
Barb
Went to Portugal in the spring (with friends ) - loved it and would definitely feel safe alone there. Did vrbo's and most people speak English. Was a very inexpensive trip as well and beautiful country !
Shelley
Love Portugal!!
Arsala
Hi Barb, Thinking about Portugal in March- would you mind sharing where you stayed and cities you went to during last spring please
Barb
Arsala Wajahat We flew into Lisbon, spent a few days there before going to Porto, Nazares, and then down to the Algarve. Did vrbos (don't have info) and they were all great! Travelled by train - heard the bus system is very good as well. Awesome country !
Bell
If I can travel halfway around the world, on my own,. Then you can too
the key thing to do is research the heck out of where you are going. Airports (gate location) local transit system, weather, cultural customs etc
Ben
Thailand! Beaches, waterfalls, most people speak English and there are tonnes of foreigners there.
Pamela
I found Rome and Florence to be easy to navigate. And lots to do. Everyone spoke English to me.
Cynthia
Ireland....direct flights....beautiful scenery and the Irish....awww
Barb
If you decide on joining a singles tour group , really do your homework. I did one to Bali years ago and it WAS NOT good. Poor organization and waaaaaay too much time sitting on buses in traffic to go sightseeing.
Susanne
Portugal...enough of a cultural change, beauty everywhere...and mostly everyone speaks EnglisH! Lovely place to start!
Susan
We did a 15 guided tour to China with Sinorama Tours .Highly recommend. Safe and always with the guide. Perfect for singles and great price too.
Ron
just go ... choose a place that interests you ....you will meet lots of other travelers and locals. I am flying to Chiang Mai Thailand for $680 rt with china eastern.
Fred
Hawaii is beautiful.
Darren
Walk with courage and do what your heart tells you. have fun life is short.
Jennie
Belize!!! fantastic place, the people are super friendly and also speak english, lots to see and do plus beaches
Jane
Belize has repeatedly been on Canada Government sites for travel advisories as not safe.
Jennie
Well I have been there; most say to not stay in Belize City and if you fly in just leave to another town. As with many cities around the world exercising extra caution is wise in big cities and traveling in general abroad. But while I was there, and I did not spend any time in Belize City at all I found the people were amazing, the countryside was clean and pristine or complete jungle, the ruins and ancient structures were fantastic, plenty of excursions and tours to try and the accommodations were great too. Food was pretty good too, depending on where you are. The beaches are also some of the most beautiful in the world. Plenty of Canadians live there in their retirement age and it is still part of the commonwealth

You'll notice that the United States is never on that list - but given the murders and guns there I don't consider it all that safe.
Moniera
Do it!! Solo travel is liberating and empowering and gloriously decadent because you do what you want when you want. Europe or the UK is easy for a first foray into solo adventures.
Brianna
Cambodia! you could see Angkor Wat, the Beaches, and learn about the heartbreaking history. I travelled there alone, and had no problems getting around, as most people speak english!
Leah
Look up G Adventures - we just did their Morocco tour it was AMAZING and CHEAP!
Anne
I followed this blog for some time. https://solotravelerworld.com If you're nervous, then start with the UK - any of the big cities have lots to offer, and you can find reasonable accommodation through vrbo or airbnb. Masses of things to do.

Australia... So friendly
Sonia
I've traveled a lot alone and with friends and family and felt safe everyplace I've been, the secret to traveling alone is confidences , pick a place that you always wanted to go and just do it ... there are so many good deals out there - enjoy life and don't let fear stop you from doing anything p.s I am heading to Vegas with friends form Oct 7th to 10th ... you are welcome to join us
Lee-Ann
Scotland. Beautiful super friendly people lots to do so much history
Iulia
So many options for solo travellers! I would suggest putting together a list of your favourite places you've always wanted to visit and then picking the one you feel most comfortable with. Cities are great for exploring solo as you have plenty to do and it's relatively safe. Hiking, active, or more adventurous vacations in places such as Machu Picchu, for example, are better to be done with small groups, and there are plenty of companies that organize such vacations. Just google them. Enjoy!!
Angela
It's not outside of North America but my husband and I just get back from a trip through the Maritimes and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Beautiful scenery, great food, inexpensive, interesting history, no customs or exchange rates to deal with...would highly recommend seeing this wonderful corner of Canada if you haven't already...
Catherin
You could stay in Canada. An easy dip into the ayers of solo travel. Go go go!

I've mostly just travelled alone. Wherever you go you'll be fine!! Enjoy the liberty and freedoms!
Adrian
Iceland - fantastic scenery, friendly people
Tara
I second Iceland, I would go back on a solo trip there, it's remote and so much photography to be had!
Adrian
totally - it's just so rugged and amazing.
Katy
Agreed but it is not cheap what so ever
Karen
As a solo traveler, I totally recommend Iceland. It's beautiful in November and their tours are really easy since they pick you up and drop you off. Super safe, even at 3am. One of my fav solo trips to date.
Maria
As a solo traveller, and for your first time, I think the British Isle is really a lovely way to start. They speak English (mostly - lol), there are more beautiful landmarks, and scenery to experience. If you are nervous, then staying in and around those major destination will allow for a sense of comfort. I don't suggest, days of hiking alone, but you can wander London, Dublin, Glasgow, etc., without fear. Just be prepared that there will be moments that you are a bit lonely, it's ok, because most of the time, you'll love doing what you want, when you want. Enjoy it's amazing to travel alone!
Carolin
Or Ireland, low population, no terrorism concerns currently, affordable, English (mostly!) speaking, low crime (violent crime, pickpockets), extremely friendly and helpful people anxious to share a culture that is slightly different from ours. Direct flights from Vancouver to Dublin, then very easy trains to beautiful and SAFE towns where locals gather for music in pubs which would give you a chance to meet people. Great food and drink!
Jane
My daughter was pick-pocketed in Dublin.
Maria
Jane you can be pick-pocketed at in your own home town. And there has to be some self responsibility in keeping your valuables somewhere safe!
Liessi
Consider voluntouring. It's a great way to visit places that you might not otherwise travel to alone, and gives you an opportunity to safely experience much more than just sightseeing. I went to Malawi (
Lilongwe Wildlife Trust) on my own to volunteer for a month at a wildlife rescue centre, where I found myself surrounded by wonderful people (who all spoke English). My travel memories now include bottle-feeding an orphaned baboon, scratching the head of a purring lioness, counting zebras from the back of a pickup truck and being spied on by a giraffe guarding his very pregnant mate. At the end, I rewarded myself with a 4-day safari. Giving is infinitely more rewarding than random pursuit!

Good for you! My first big solo trip 15 years ago was to Thailand and it was incredible. The best advice my friend gave me is to remember that there are travel angels everywhere. People will take care of you and help you out if you need it, it's the true human nature. I've always found this to be the case and I have now traveled extensively as a single woman. Have fun! You will meet tons of great people traveling alone and likely come back feeling great about yourself.
Alena
I am in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and would highly recommend it! With the exchange rate, you can eat well, get massages and most of the locals speak enough English that you won't have trouble at all. My first trip outside North America in 20 years & loving it!
Kirsten
Hawaii
- Thailand would be too overwhelming by the sounds of it.
Kristin
I travelled to Bali solo for three weeks in 2015 after a 7 year relationship dissolved. Found a flight that gave me two nights in Tokyo before going on to Indonesia from yvr for $750 & I don't regret a thing. I was in my late 20's and mostly stayed in hostels, though I booked my first few nights plus those in Tokyo before I left.
Don't plan too much & be open to going with the flow of things. Set yourself up to get out of your comfort zone & you'll find growth in yourself
Rory
do the eat love pray thing in Bali, the nice thing about most popular destinations around the world is enough people speak English where you'll get by.
Agnɘs
You will be okay! Stick with English speaking countries if you are absolutely nervous about language. Stick with accommodation that you're comfortable with but look up nearby hostels as large hostels usually have 'free' tours (free for admission but they will ask for a tip). Don't be afraid to ask strangers to help you take a picture.
Kerry
Kona, Hawaii. Beautiful and never ending list of things to do and see. There are a couple Facebook pages you can check them out with. 365 Things To Do In Kona is one.
Deana
Excited for you Sara!
Emilija
You will have the best time ever! Nothing more empowering than solo travel
Michelle
I applaud you for doing this, I have travelled all over the world with my husband and I still wouldn't have the courage to do a solo trip! My advise is to look for a Woman's travel group. We saw one while in Zanzibar and they were all ages, and were having the time of their lives. I was actually jealous! The other thing to ask yourself is what do you like and what are you interested in seeing? The world is small but the options are incredibly large. Narrow it down a bit for us, I'm sure you'll get better advise
Jodi
I'd highly recommend joining an Intrepid travel or G adventures group. It's semi organized so they take all the hassle and planning logistics out of the trip but you still have the flexibility to do whatever you want. It's small group tours so you still go "solo" but for a first timer, this is hands down the way to get a taste of international travel without the pressure or intimidation of getting all your ducks in a row.
Troy
Thailand with G Adventures is all single travellers
Sally
Pick two European cities that sound interesting to you and that have an easy train connection. Fly into one and out the other. Europe is a great place to gain some confidence and to see a lot of neat stuff in a short amount of time, plus getting by on a combination of English and waving your hands around/pointing at stuff won't be a problem.
Bogart
Iceland is amazing! friendly and helpful people, great customer service, and no tips required. it's a great trip to take specially if you are a nature lover. I want to go back and explore more of the country.
Pat
Find a tour and start with that. I have solo travelled for 10 years now with and without tours and it's easy. If you are sporty, try G Adventures
Christin
Ireland does not disapoint
Jennifer
G Adventures is great, because there is no single supplement. I did a sailing trip in Greece with them a few months ago and it was amazing. That said, I really prefer independent trips for myself. Trains around Europe are generally fast and cheap, even without a pass. Italy is a favourite, and everyone speaks a little English at least. The food and scenery are to die for.
Zsa
I loved (and felt very safe) travelling through New Zealand as a solo woman on my first extended solo trip. Everyone I met (locals and fellow travellers) were friendly and helpful, the accommodations were all clean, and the scenery was absolutely incredible.
I applaud your courageousness in going on this adventure. I have a feeling that, no matter where you choose, you're going to have an amazing experience and find strength and confidence that you may not have been aware was there. Have a great trip!
Tiffany
I've travelled alone a lot, including to the middle east. Wherever you go, have a blast, reflect, meet people. But also be careful, always aware of your surroundings. I think this will be so great for you
Deb
Mediterranean coast of Spain is lovely in Nov.
Julia
I would recommend Thailand. It is super safe and very easy to travel around. Most people speak English and it would provide a rewarding challenge to be pushed out of your comfort zone. Also, the food is just spectacular and the people are so lovely.
Collin
This 100%
Collin
I've been to southeast asia a few times now and never had any problems, The people in thailand are so friendly!
Julia
Paula Ouellet It is very safe, modern, easy to get around and affordable. A great option.
Christin
U.K first, then do side trips to one or more of the following.. Ireland is fantastic, or Paris. Vienna is amazing too. Budapest. Malta is also not somewhere people put on their list but it's beautiful, and everyone speaks English.
Have fun!!!
Karen
Ireland..the people are amazing, and there is so much to see and do.
Katherin
Berlin and Germany!
Ajay
I would recommend Amsterdam
Direct flights, everyone speaks English and people are very friendly
So much to see and enjoy
Yee
Los Angeles
Cristina
I went to Copenhagen solo last year, it was beautiful and super amazing to walk around and see the city. I'd stick to Western Europe, and even further places that are comfortable with English speakers- Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. Also great for chill life reflection.
Jill
Yes I totally agree with everything here - Western Europe/Scandinavia are easy to travel, beautiful, great food/culture and great people. But very very expensive.
Jane
I have travelled to Hawaii (Oahu) solo many times. Very safe, friendly, and great public transit.
Collin
Anywhere in southeast Asia really, Bali, Thailand, Vietnam, don't be afraid to leave the continent, I see a lot of people here saying places in the USA, you won't experience anything new there from living in North America, get outside your comfort zone and try something different, it will change your life for the better
Stephani
The first time I travelled alone, I went to Hawaii. I stayed in Waikiki, just a couple blocks from the beach, rented a scooter and navigated in search of a famous food truck, booked a kayak tour, just hung out and enjoyed meals alone. It was a pretty liberating experience.
Olga
There is a new direct route starting the end of October from YVR - Reykjavík, Iceland, most people speak Engl fluently in Europe. The introductory price is super good - use google flights to find a direct flight, put the dates and non-stop, then click on the departure date it gives you a calendar. It depends on what do you have in mind - sunny destination or just a new very different city to visit. Other safe direct destinations from YVR are PVR (Puerto Vallarta), AMS (Amsrerdam), PAR (Paris), FRA (Frankfurt), HNL (Honolulu), London UK...
Jenny
I second the Iceland! I've always wanted to go there!

Cuba is amazing and inexpensive for all inclusive. Everyone speaks English and the Cubans are such lovely people. It is a very safe country and an all inclusive would be an easy way to meet people. My family and I have stayed at the Iberostar Tainos in Varadero many times and the staff are truly incredible!!! They have become like family to us. Good luck with your solo travel. I hope that you have an amazing time, whatever you choose to do.
Paul
Cuba is awesome but it will take months to repair the damage from hurricane Irma. Varadaro is in shambles. Airport closed. Coya Santa Maria where I flew into in May is close till Nov. Santa Maria town had 39 buildings destroyed and its a small town. Coya Santa Maria resorts r damaged too. I won't travel back there till at least spring next year.
Ron
I almost always travel solo. Love it! Do what you want, when you want, with whom you want. That being said... it is probably a little different for a guy. My suggestion for a first trip alone. Do a Playa del Carmen or similar type trip. I know it's North America. But it's somewhere where you can be on a resort and feel safe. You will enviably meet people you connect with, who will invite you to tag along on their excursions or adventures. Or take one of the group outtings through the travel company that is on site. Not sure what you're looking for. Beach, culture, relaxation or adventure? But, Mexico, despite the bad press it gets is a good start. That or Hawaii. My
in Maui... Love it. Those are a couple of places I've been solo many a time. Good starter destinations.
Trina
I have travelled alone quite a bit-- you can do this. I'd recommend southeast asia as it is well-established for travellers (in other words, easy) and cheap. But it really depends on what you want to see/do. Don't bother with a tour group, stay in a guesthouse with some communal space. You will meet people more easily. Have fun!
Jenny
Australia and New Zealand are obvious choices but expensive. How far out of your comfort zone do you want? Thailand is incredible but if you want something in between Singapore and Malaysia are super cool (look up Taman Negara in Malaysia). I loved Taiwan but that is really off the beaten track. You'll find a decent amount of English in Hong Kong South Korea Singapore. I highly recommend super safe and rarely visited Tonga. On vavau Island (of tonga) you wan swim with humpback whales. Worth every cent and one of the top 10 experiences of my life. It was about 250$ you can also take snorkelling trips for only 40$ (you are usually tagging along with divers). Don't forget to buy super cheap vanilla beans to bring back with you and share with friends if you want. There are infinite possibilities. I took off for one year alone and it was the best experience ever. Make sure you stay in hostels (reputable ones) so you can meet people and have some company when you want (you get to choose since when you are alone you do what you want! It's awesome). Have fun and no matter where you go, it will be awesome!
Jenny
I don't recommend resorts unless you are totally not street smart and very anxious about travelling alone. If that's not you, I would venture out a bit further.
Lindsey
Australia or New Zealand, get a hop-on/hop-off bus ticket. Australia's east coast in particular is a very easy place to meet people. The YHAs are a good place to start
Andrea
Belize ambergris caye or caye Caulker.
Kate
Travelling solo is THE BEST! You can super cheap flights to Iceland in Nov I think.
Ryan
Check out some of the Rick Steve's tours in Europe, watch some of his videos on youtube to pick which one
Karen
Paris! I speak only English , and had no trouble. You can have some picnic dinners, some bistro meals. Read Rick Steeves Guide book. The Rue Cler area is a friendly place to use for a base. We walked all the way to the Louvre, took the bus back. Metro is also easy. Take a Seine boat tour during the day, and then go again after dark. I loved it! So much to do! Good luck and have fun!
Suzette

England or Ireland? There's cheap flights through west jet, maybe air canada. And maybe wow air. English countries will be easier
Tours are also easier- contiki or top deck. Depends how much you want to party but organized tours are easy and you meet ppl. So for beginner solo journées tours are the best starting points
Dorte
Go to an English speaking country like Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland as I think you would feel more comfortable there as it is not as different as going to e.g. Asia
Ronald
A cruise is probably the safest way for a single woman to travel. It can also be when everything is said and done not a budget buster. You will likely experience less anxiety than any other alternative. It's not for me but it is for many.
Marisa
Go to Barcelona Spain with a stop over in Amsterdam. Always remember the same rules apply abroad, as North America.
Metta
Barcelona is dangerous. Bad advice. I've been many times. I know what I'm talking about. Best city on earth for me but not for a first time traveller.
Amandeep
Metta I stuck to the popular tourist spots and was fine. Also used this site, https://www.withlocals.com

Ireland
beautiful, not too expensive, not too big/overwhelming to get around + the people are warm + welcoming. Weather's not always the best
but the scenery is stunning, the food is good + the history is fascinating.
Alex
South East Asia might sound very intimidating, but it's full of solo travellers, like yourself. Great place to experience the right kind of culture shock, but filled with wonderful, hospitable people. Thailand would be a great start.
Kerry
I'm in a similar boat. I was super nervous to go alone, but recently booked my first solo trip to Turks and Caicos - the Club Med there is known for being a fantastic destination for solo travellers. Obviously (and unfortunately) it's been delayed now, but will happen as soon as they reopen! Good luck!!
Rebecca
Siobhan any advice/experiences to share?
Biljana
Congratulations Sara, on stepping out of your comfort zone. The first step is always the hardest. There are so many awesome places you could go. I vote for Amsterdam. A direct flight should be pretty cheap that time of year. Everyone speaks English.....the city is friendly and walkable and there is so much to see and do. I've been many times on my own and always enjoyed it immensely. Have fun no matter what you decide!
Jennifer
Australia is amazing and built for travelers so easy to get around and unbelievable sights too- i did it myself at 20
Pattie
Go to Mexico, town of Bucerías, lots of expats there. Very friendly, lots of women traveling alone there. It's very inclusive. And, may I say, good on you. Don't wait around, it's hard but it gets easier.
Amanda
Do a tour! So much fun, and easy travelling - your guide will help you with this transition
Jill
Belize. The Cayes. Just stay away from Belize City.
Laura
I too did my first solo trip to Belize! It was AMAZING! I stayed in Hopkins, at Beaches And Dreams Seafront Inn. Byron (the GM) set everything up and took awesome care of me. Would totally recommend it to anyone
Rebecca
Beware of the solo-travel supplement fees. (this shows up as "prices based on double occupancy")
I went on a solo trip this spring. I found that staying in a BnB gave me a home base and having someone watching out for me, some local and maybe even someone to go to dinner with took the "lonelies" out of the trip initally. My host spoke Spanish so going out to have cuban coffee in the morning was so much fun listening to her order for me. She had a very friendly dog too that I took for walks with me when checking out the beach. So, take home, consider a BnB if you feel comfy in a home environment.
If you have any artistic interests it might be worth your while to look for and sign up for a class or drop in centre and you might meet some nice people to do things with. Dance/painting/language?
Do let us know how it goes for you, and where you end up booking!! I hope it's everything you're looking for.
PS: One more piece of advice, if there is an option to upgrade your seat to business or 1st class DO IT. Don't pay over a $100 for it though, you'll see if there's set upgrades when you check in online. If none online dress "up" for the flight so when you approach the counter you could ask if there are any free upgrades available. It is so lovely to get that extra attention and service. It really feels special.
David
Palms springs, warm, nice pools, cheap flight, lots to see, josha tree, all dessert, close to San Diego. Scope it out online, I am leaving their tomorrow!

Hey Sara! You should join the group Facebook Girls Love Travel! Lots of supportive ladies with good advice! It's an amazing community to be part of
Mich
UK,. Hawai'i, or somewhere cool in the US - Nashville, Vegas.
Danny
My favourite city is Singapore. It's very clean, safe and easy to get around. It has a diversity of things to do, and everything you could want is right there, from world class shopping along Orchard Road to the tropical beaches of Sentosa Island. The food in the hawker stalls is cheap and amazingly tasty. It's exotic, yet everyone speaks perfect English. Also, there are some enticing flight bargains these days.
Ester
Europe; Portugal or Italy, The Netherlands. Have a great adventure!
Tom
London would be a good start, beautiful city with rich history. All museums in London are free to enter so you don't have to worry about spending too much on those, and the tube is relatively easy to navigate around as well. Best of all: English lol
Paulette
only downsize is that the UK is very expensive, especially London
Tom
It is, but with recent spike in CAD exchange rate to pounds, it's not too bad now. Only 1.632 compared to 1.997 when I went last year
Thi
Yoga retreat in Thailand. Most come with English speakers and it may be a great place to reflect and recharge
Leanne
Hostels are a great experience!
Leanne
Im happy to.share specific examples when you narrow down your destination so as to not sway your decision.
Paulette
If you are looking for somewhere warm in November, I vote for Spain and the Costa del sol or Costa Blanca areas. In November air transat has probably the cheapest flights to London. From there you get low cost flight to wherever you want to go. The Costas have a lot of English expats living there so language is not much of an issue. We went to Spain last year for 3 weeks and though had trepidations about not speaking the language, we managed well, and couldn't wait to go back this year - flights booked for late October. Message me if you would like details or more info
Donna
You are thinking about this in a very intelligent way. I have been doing this for 20 years now and here is what has worked for me. Sign up for somethig somewhere - yoga, cooking, hiking etc. Start with a group to get the lay of the land and lower your anxiety level. Maybe make some new friends. Then start your solo journey grounded, rested and restored. What has worked best for me has been yoga/meditation - a very nourishing start instead of a big rush.
Paulette
As Leanne indicates, hostels are a good accommodation option - you can now get single rooms with en suite so they are not different than a hotel room but usually cheaper
Leanne
This adds a comfort factor for a new solo traveller. Most places need to speak. English
Barry
The key thing to remember is that 99.999% of people are just good folks and will want to help you and be nice, and they have no ill will towards you. They are the same as you. Go anywhere in the world and this is what you will find.
Andrea
Ireland, Australia , New Zealand....those are ones I have travelled solo and had awesome experiences
Stefan
The world is yours! Enjoy it :))
Siobhan
The anxiety happens pre trip...and then you get there and it all seems to be ok I've found... I've been going to France the last two years and got a rail pass which was very easy to use...I do find cities intimidate me which is why I tend to stay near the ocean if I can, as it's usually smaller towns and more casual. Portugal is very easy to travel around, and I'm en route to do France/ Ireland in October so I'll let you know how it goes!
Siobhan
Paris is easy for solo travel, I was super nervous to go but as soon as I checked into the hotel I felt at ease. I like using the public transport and in Paris it's so easy and cheap and u and see the sites! I did the same in Mexico
Meron
My daughter and I just did a 5 week tour in Europe. I loved it all and want to go back and spend more time in each country that we visited. UK was AWESOME!!! AirB&B was perfect. Get out of the city and see the country side if you can, that was the best part. We had a car, which may not be in your budget, but it was the best to get around. We did a lot of castle hunting.
Leanne
If you are looking at November then Australia and New Zealand would be great options for favorable weather. Or Spain/Portugal.
Shanon
I agree with
Pattie
Lexi
Ecuador! I went there solo last year and felt very safe. Lots of locals speak English and are super helpful. It's also really cool that because the country is so small you can get from high up in the Andes to the Amazon basin in a day. Cannot recommend it enough!
Jennifer
Reykjavik is very safe and Iceland is beautiful. Almost everyone speaks English. I went alone for 5 days and did a few bus tours.
Jennifer
The only problem with Iceland is that it will be pretty dreary in November. Australia is also amazing and easy for a Canadian to get around.
Tanya
I highly recommend Belize as a fantastic English speaking country. Wonderful people, great food, amazing sights. The Belizians we met were friendly and happy to see tourists. All the tour guides we hired were top notch. They have a very rigorous certification system. We felt very safe the whole time, though we did not spend time in the capitol, which has a bad reputation.
I love traveling solo, but since Belize is not that crowded with tourists it might be better to have a travel companion. Rick Steves tour in Europe might be more up your alley.
Chantale
Bali!!!
Rachel
Spain !
Goya
What about Copenhagen or Munich? A place where lots of taxi drivers are women and you don't get hassled much. They can be pricey though.
Chris
There were a lot of comments for non English speaking countries. Having done a lot of travel I'm thinking staying in an English speaking area would be prudent. That said what are your interests or goals if this trip? Adventure and excitement? Photography? Relaxation? Culinary exploration? Cultural engagement? Meeting new people?
Bobby
Go on a cruise!
Sonia
Taiwan welcomes foreign travelers and is a fabulous destination for foodies.

London, so much to do, ride the underground everywhere, stay in a hostel to keep costs down. Ireland is great too. There are tour groups like CONTIKI that do tours all over the world . Contiki is for 18-35 year olds i think and you meet great people from all over
Deirdrey
dont go to England or Ireland in the Winter its cold and rains all the time.
Kendra
Amsterdam. People are so friendly and everyone spoke English that we talked soon. Super nice place to go.
Gail
Netherlands is beautiful. Most everyone speaks English, signs at the airport are in English too.

I would suggest Rick Steves and do a 10 day European tour! That time of year would be awesome with Christmas markets. Or London, Scotland, or Ireland. I've gone to Ireland a bunch and I suggest a car... but I e spent a bunch of days wandering London and it super easy to find tours to places out of the city. I also did Paris and I only speak English. I've done them all alone and had no problems. Find a good travel agent and they should be able to help. You can ask when looking if they have been or if anyone in the office has been. They they can give you first hand advice. That's how I did mine.
Liz
Or do a Mediterranean cruise! They have tours and stuff
Richard
Amsterdam is an amazing city, and pretty much everyone in the Netherlands speaks English. I would be happy to share some amazing airbnb places I used in Amsterdam and a couple B&B's in the countryside.
Germany is also amazing, and there are tons of English speakers there too. Really nice people as well.
Craig
You've got this. Malaysia is quite exotic yet most people speak English. Budapest is gorgeous and once again fairly easy for an English speaker. Push that comfort zone! You're going to be glad you did.
Maria
Scotland!! Edinburgh is fabulous! Friendly and easy to navigate alone. Enjoy!!
Katherin
Hi Sara,
I am a 50 year old woman who's has been traveling solo for almost ten years and I don't have bags of money either
. I avoid Europe because of the exchange rate and because it still reminds me I live in the west. The historical aspects of Europe would be a huge draw of course and I did spend 2 weeks in France and loved it.
Take a chance and really see the world outside your comfort level. Your perspective on the world will change. Do your research before you go and than go anyway.
My first solo trip was Kenya, Uganda, Egypt, than Turkey, Dubai, France and now Peru. Every place I have been treated me with the utmost respect (as I would treat them and respect there culture and customs) and I have met some pretty amazing people from every corner of the world. Something you wouldn't necessarily do if you were with people. Find the courage and you can do it and when you do it you won't want to stop.
Dee
Wow, you jumped in with both feet. Continue your amazing travels.
Ellen
Well it really depends on what you want to DO! Hiking? Try the Camino in Spain or the Pembrokeshire coastal trail. Beaches - gotta give that one to Australia. (Beaches north of Kona on Hawaii are a close second). But a long way to go for ten days. Want to see wonderful historical sites - try Krakow Poland. Want to meet people - take a tour. Let us know what you decide!
Shelagh
Brussels! International city with the EU and very diverse, friendly and beautiful! Easy to do day trips to Amsterdam or Bruge etc
Ron
New Zealand has some real air fares to go there these days. THAILAND IS cheap place to holiday there are nice resorts in the South which are very reasonable at that time of year.
Peter
I also travel single and quite enjoy a cruise , vacationstogo.com, enjoy your choices
VACATIONSTOGO.COM
Discount Cruises, Last Minute Cruises, Cruise, Cruise Line, Cruise Vacation
Shelagh
A vrbo can be like a home away from home and allows you to do some meals like home. So saving some cash. Visiting local markets is also a blast!
Look around Place Flagey in Brussels. Was there in March and it exceeded expectations. Very easy to get around on public transit, which everyone uses. Can walk downtown in about 20 min. I was there with a teen and felt very safe the whole time
Hannah
I love Portugal for solo travel! Most people speak English, especially young people, and it is very easy to get around, very cheap, SOOOOO beautiful. It's quite a different culture than the rest of Europe I find
Hannah
Also it is incredibly safe. Sometimes people find it 'looks sketchy' but honestly, I have been alone with men many times in Portugal and never had one so much as look at me in a way that made me feel uncomfortable. I feel like even a 'sketchy' place in Portugal is safer than a street in London or something. And again, our money goes verrrryyyyyyy far there. It's also very warm and mild in winter.
Lo
I completely agree with Portugal. Also the "saudade" factor.
Michele
I'm 52, recently divorced and just came back from a solo trip in Peru. I found Peru safe and easy to travel around. I stayed in budget accommodation - but upgraded to single room with bathroom. I also booked a week trek on the Inca trail through G Adventures. in all spent one month there and loved it...
Jennifer
Read the book "Eat Pray Love" too
Stash
Hands-down - Bali!
Nina
Malta- full of history and good food and everyone speaks English!
Teresa
Second this! Tons of history, gorgeous beaches, very safe and reasonably priced. I've only been with family but my sister traveled to Malta alone at age 26 for a week and we both had an amazing time.
Wendy
Hi! I was recently in a very similar situation! I looked around, and finally felt like I should book a trip to Hawaii. Signed up to be a wwoofer at a farm... 5 months later, i am still here! Love it! Good luck! You will do great, it is awesome to travel alone!!
Kelly
I know exactly how you feel. I need a vacation too but no one to go with anymore and not comfortable going on my own. I will follow your post for some ideas.
Sandra
Cuba...great dollar for value...just double check conditions to see if they were impacted by the Hurricanes. Amazing people. Beautiful places, Great snorkeling and scuba diving...don't get me wrong...bring salt, pepper and hot sauce if you like spices in your food, as the food is basic. But you can't beat the stories you'll come back with and the amazing memories you can create. I did it with a girlfriend back in the day and we had an amazing time. We did some stuff on our own..but the overnighter in the Cuban mountains we did together...that was an amazing 2 days.
Melissa
I heard Bali Indonesia is really popular for solo travellers! I went with my partner and we found Ubud very peaceful and tranquil
Tamasin
I travelled as a solo female in Cuba and really enjoyed it. Flew into Varadero, carried into Ceinfuegos, Havana and then back out of Varadero again. I did not speak any spanish, I just took a phrase book.
Kim
I've been travelling solo for 30 years. My recommendation for a first timer would be Iceland (familiarity, English, safe for women, easy to get around - car rental & driving around the country super easy, and variety of things to do) - but it is pricey. Next would be England or anywhere in the UK. Really anywhere in western Europe should be a breeze. I haven't been to Australia or New Zealand yet, but I'm sure it would also top the list.
Shu
A very safe, small place, but where you can get culturally stretched, is Singapore. It's a country where I allowed my teenaged girl to wander around at night, taking in city night life, without too much worry about her personal safety. They speak four official languages over there; amongst them is English, albeit with a "funny" accent to unfamiliar ears.
Annie
That is an interesting suggestion. I'm remembering this.
Rosemary
stay in casa particulaires throughout the country, permitted by gov., only $25-$40/night and you will feel comfortable and safe. I've been 4 times, busing throughout on what is a tourist bus similar to Greyhound--locals ride on crappy buses--can give you places in Havana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Santa Clara....there also are great women-only group tours for travelling for short timeframes which might be a great way to build confidence as you will not be totally alone, yet hearing other womens' stories.....New Zealand, Australia are great, they travel a lot as a culture, English of course, dollar at par with CA......
Karen
Subscribe to the JourneyWoman newsletters and read their website, follow her on Facebook.
Kim
The other option I would recommend is going on a group trip with someone like G Adventures. Most of their trips accommodate solo travelers. Then tack on extra time in that area afterwards and do some exploring on your own. If you find that you're not comfortable going solo after the group trip, you can connect with the company and ask for some help/suggestions. Often they can hook you up with one of their guides or provide suggestions for other day-trips etc. I did that with my Africa trip with G and had a blast.
Morganne
Just finishing my first solo trip in Ireland! Amazing place, great people and safe (with common sense of course)
Sabeta
I will be visiting Ireland for the first time in November for just 4 full days. Care to share any tips? Thank you.
Jewels
I travel solo all the time (work and play). Staying in hostels and/or joining a 10 day tour or just a 1 day walking tour are always good and you get to meet people! If you want easy, Great Britain or Western Europe really. If you want sun, the Caribbean, depending on time Australia (need a good 15-20 days on account for travel) same for Africa. Message me directly if you have specific questions about these places.

try an all inclusive resort in Mexico where you do not have to worry about where to eat or what to enjoy. lots of organized tours from the hotels.
Tas
Hawaii or Europe! Also hong Kong and other Asian places all speak English and very safe! Phillippines great in November. (Boracay and Cebu)
Suzanne
I took my first alone trip to Mexico. Puerto Vallarta and all the hotel staff speak English
Suzanne
I have traveled to Puerto Vallarta many times and my first alone trip was for 2 weeks in 1991. I have been many times since and twice before my trip on my own. I always feel safe and I love that town.
Janice
don't go to Turkey!
Alan
Mexico City!
Aimee
Go alone, you will meet people along the way right on the pane to be exact. You will be fine. Don't join any group adventure stuff. You will automatically meet. It all comes from you. You also need to put the energy and vibe out there to connect with ppl from all over the world. My first back pack trip alone was Central America all the countries in 6 months when I was 23 years old. I would go back again in a heart beat. I think with 10 days you could do Costa Rica / Nicaragua / Guatemala. Don't worry about the language barrier. I brought a small pocket size dictionary language Spanish English book and practiced like that. Also if you want to learn Spanish why not take a 7 days Spanish course 9-12 and the rest of the day explore with the class/ surf, cook, bike ride, tours. Then lease the last three days to chill on a beach. This way you meet ppl plus have a community for 7 days and sleep at the school dorms. I did this for a month in Guatemala and loved it to ease myself into the culture and as a solo traveler great way to meet ppl.
Sharon
Thailand or Bali. Super friendly. Great bang for your buck. Safe. I did it alone last summer. Zero problems. You got this !!!!!
CZarina
Ireland, UK, Holland....for Europe, just go. Stay in hostels or YHAs....they're family friendly as well as fun and cheap. Keep your personal things on you at all times. Once you go.... you'll never stop, everywhere you go you'll find people who speak English. You're almost never alone, you'll always find someone to accompany you on a day tour or walk or city walk. Have fun!
Trudy
I feel that if you only have a maximum of 10 days, you might be best to stay a little closer to home. I have been to Puerto Vallarta Mexico many, many times and it is lovely. An All Inclusive Resort would probably be best as you will have lots of people around you and they always have lots of activities going on that you can either be a part of or just watch. PV is a tourist destination so English is widely spoken and it is very affordable. Taking the local transit is super easy, and there are a lot of day trips and small towns around the area that you can visit and boost your confidence a little for your next adventure. I always go with my husband and friends, but would not hesitate for one second to go alone
Susan
I travel alone most of the time - I have found taking a short organized tour, as a single, and combing it with time in a large city work for me. You could look into exploreworldwide.ca and gadventures.ca, both offer no single supplement or a small supplement if you want your own room. There are many other good companies. You get a guided tour and company, but can hve your own room if you want it. Staying someplace where you understand the language and culture is a good place to start. Always lock up your valuables, take only what you need, and have a business card with the hotel name on it....just in case you get lost. There are lots of travel tips online as well. Alos, combining travel with something you love is a good way to travel: yoga, painting, hiking....whatevery you love the most.Enjoy the adventure!
Julia
It's amazing how many if us there are out here. 52, recently divorced and excitrd about life.

Norwegian cruise lines now sell single rooms. My newly divorced sister in law did a Mediterranean cruise with them. The rooms are grouped together with a common area and a hostess. You can dine with them or on your own. She loved it and is planning her next adventure
Gina
Depending on how old you are there are lots of trip tours that are awesome ways to see stuff and meet people then you could do the second half by yourself or vice versa. I recommend the Top Deck tours but I believe they are under 35yrs old. There would have to be other tour companies though!
Melissa
Maybe somewhere in Europe? Direct flights, safe for a single female to travel alone, and plenty of gorgeous cities to choose from!

I travel alone a lot (for work mostly) and agree that you should go somewhere english speaking. It makes everything easier; maps, street signs, transit, etc.let alone interactions with locals. Australia's dollar is pretty much on par with ours, and I found food pricing there to be pretty in line with casual upscale dining here in Vancouver. There are always sales to Aus posted on here, and it's very easy to navigate once you get there. The UK would also be a great choice but with the dollar exchange it'll cost more. I don't know how budget you're trying to go here, but if you stay at airbnb's with female hosts, you may enjoy that more than hostels (and you can get rooms in houses for great prices, and get local recommendations from your host). Hostels are fun fun for meeting people who may also be traveling solo...depends on how introverted you are. There are some other places where English is very common (Belize, Philipines, etc) but since you're already experiencing anxiety about this, just eliminate those and save it for the next one. Go for a 'sure thing'. You'll love it!! (ps - Singapore is also english primary, and extremely safe, if you do decide to do Asia. It depends on your travel style but I find cruises don't really offer you a local experience in the ports of call....)
Carissa
I would suggest Bali! It's pretty inexpensive and very friendly and peaceful people! If you go on the tourist areas I'm sure people speak English. I did make a friend in Bali and he rents a room in his home or rent his villa. It's a wood carvers village and plenty of things to do and learn. He speaks English well since he lived and worked in the US for a bit. He gets solo travellers as well. Message me if you want an introduction to him
good luck !!
Chantale
Can you put me in touch? I am traveling solo to Bali in December and looking for places to stay.
Carissa
Chantale I've added you as a friend... then I'll send an introduction message with you in it.
Sara
This is very tempting.
Chantale
Sara when are you travelling? I'll be in Bali Dec.22 to Jan.6. First solo trip as well!!
Tonya
Bali is super easy to travel in; while its a very small island, there are 3 1/2 million people and its quite diverse. I spent 3 months there in 2014. Ubud is very different from Sanur which is very different from Lovina ... just depends on what you want. Accommodation is dead easy -- most everyone is on their own -- and there are a million homestays.
Brittany
Carissa introduced me to her friend when my husband and I went to Bali. He was so great!! We LOVED Bali and felt very safe! I highly recommend
Christin
Dublin, Ireland. International city but small enough to easily navigate. Lots to see, do, eat, listen to. Music, art, history. And Guinness!! English speaking. Some parts of town are party party party and lots of young people (Temple Bar) and some parts are quiet and laid back. And there's tons of day trips available with local bus tours (awesome if you're solo or new to a place) to go north, south, west, etc. and pack in a TON in a short time. (I recommend visiting Newgrange - amazing!!) I truly adored my time in Dublin and though I was travelling with someone, I have done *some* travel solo and definitely thought to myself many times while there that it was a place I'd be comfortable on my own. Good luck!!!
Lisa
Do a gadventures trip..I have done several solo and it's good cuze there's company ..and reasonable price,,don't do a cruise
Shirley
Hey you! PM me! I have lots of experience! We should have discussed this today!
Marilyn
My first solo was Beijing on a tour. Language was taken care of, pick up/drop off everyday was at the hotel, taken to all the sights. It was a great way to initiate the travel bug in me.
Sara
OMG I am so blown away by all these ideas. The last few years have been so difficult and this is such a big step. I will be reading everyone. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Tonya
Having done plenty of both, the best advice is not where or how you travel, but to go where there are other people travelling as singles. A cruise may feel safe, but who wants to spend all the time with couples celebrating their 25th Anniversary? Go where other like-minded travellers are! I also heartily recommend a group tour -- checks all the boxes -- and some are even professional women targeted. Have fun.

I am a senior solo female backpacker. Singapore is a great destination, very safe, English spoken, easy to get around. Accom can be pricey but I used airbnb and ended up staying in a maid's room in a condo - worked perfectly!!
Sara
That is my first choice but a 16 hour flight!
Bernice
I've done couch surfing and had great success - you get to pick the people and view their reviews. As long as you are a little easy going you will be fine! And it is free
We had a young guy stay at our house a few years ago and then stayed at his house in Northern Ireland the next year - metal tour guides. It was great!
Janet
November 10 days. Hmm Mexico in November has almost as many Canadians/Americans as Mexicans. PV everyone speaks English. Go north 2 hours to Saulita by bus I am also a senior and solo traveler and I am going to India Sep 26 for six months
Julie
Sayulita is maybe 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta.
Janet
Julie sorry you are correct I went to Las Penitas last time.
Tracy
Rome, everyone speaks English!! Great food, excellent tours!
Kelly
The Netherlands extremely friendly and alnost everyone speaks english
Sara
A 10 hour flight may be doable for me.
Kelly
I went solo with my 8 year old was great
Vicki
Yes, Rome would be very doable alone. Check out The Beehive, Rome, for CHEAP, wonderful accommodation, in a terrific location. You will feel so at home there and they will give you tons of ideas of places to go.
Sara
I love this suggestion.
Vicki
Honestly a perfect place to stay - spartan, yes, but clean, wonderful people (2 Americans so English isnt a problem), and a perfect location
Vicki
Check out their website and app
Vicki
Oh, and they have Beehive approved places to stay around the world

Check out Italianfix. They provide group trips to Italy for women. It looks like so much fun and what better place to travel than Italy for great food, culture, amazing scenery and people! Venice, Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre are incredible. Not sure what weather would be like in November though.
Linda
It's awesome seeing these posts. I'm taking a tour with my sister in February and after she leaves to come home, I'm off for 3 weeks travelling Cambodia. It's my first SOLO travel and I'm scared but excited. I think everyone needs to do something that scares them a little every so often, so I'm going for it, and I hope you do too!
Sonia
You go girl ! Btw I was in Cambodia last November n it was amazing- have a fantastic vacation
Sara
I will and kudos to you too!
Janet
Cambodia is cool I was there a couple of years ago. Check hostel bookers for places to stay
Jen
Tokyo is amazing, and totally safe. There are Ryokan (guest houses; more traditional or modern) which are nice, and don't make you feel so alone. You can get by with English, but if you learn 5-10 polite phrases, it will get you far, and people are SO HELPFUL. If you get someone to explain the address system, and you have a bilingual map (atlas), it is totally navigable.
Kyoto is a slower-paced alternative, but Tokyo was easier because of more transit and more English speakers (or those willing to speak to a foreigner). Oh, and Tokyo or Kyoto or parts south in November is nice. You will need a sweater or jacket, but it's not like Vancouver.
Bonnie
Paris is a great city. The French people do not appear overly friendly but remember that is their way so do not be offended by their apparent arrogant ways
Bonnie
They are lovely people and more than willing to help in any way. Try to speak a few words of French it goes a long way. Also Belgium is a wonderful friendly and accommodating country. Germany appears arrogant but truly they are very lovely and supportive and truly a wonderful people
Kelly
Agreed Belgium is lovely and really friendly. Germany too
Bonnie
Well said Dave
Jan
Belize... good intro to Central America and they speak English. Fly into Belize city, walk down the airport hall way and take a small plane to Caye Caulkner.
Tammara
Caye Caulker is very safe. Belize is not.
Sue
Any recommendations for accommodations?
Melissa
I am in the exact same position as you. Divorced, trying to figure out where to go where I can navigate as a first time solo traveller. Let me know if you want company!
Scott
Any city in Europe. Just about any city in Central America. Mexico, maybe?
air canada has been having sales lately on tickets to various cities in Asia.
I’m in Thailand currently. I speak a grand total of two phrases, badly.
Everywhere I’ve been, there is enough English in the tourist centers to get by. You can stretch yourself a bit - I just walked two blocks from my guesthouse and had a big bowl of something for breakfast (pho, I think) . No English in this case - just gestures and smiles, and at the end she wrote the amount on paper.
As for direct flights - international transfers aren’t terribly difficult - follow the signs. But, YVR has direct flights to at least Hong Kong, Tokyo, etc.
Transportation once you hit the ground isn’t as harrowing as it used to be, as you can get uber or Lyft in many places. That will get you to your lodgings, then you can experiment with the local transit system after you’ve slept and recovered from your flight.
Not sure what your budget is, but cheap but functional rooms can be had... pretty cheap anywhere but the US. Hostels and guest houses are definitely worth a look. Twice I’ve run into other folks in a hostel and ended up traveling with them for a couple of weeks. We all had extra company and a second person to bounce ideas off, they got to avoid potential problems as lone-female travelers.
airbnb is nice, but that involves more logistics that I usually don’t want to deal with when arriving in a foreign country.
Sara
Thanks, Scott. You have so much great advice. I need to and can do this, right?
Scott
Yes, you can need to.

Jessica
Sara! Bali is amazing. I did it solo after my separation as well. Super safe, lovely ppl, beautiful scenery, amazing culture....
Jen
Jessica how long is the flight?
Sara
Thanks, Jessica. Bali is definitely a consideration. I love the suggestion..
Hilary
Nov is also low season so won't be packed in Europe with tourists. Spain and Portugal are also cheaper and might have some nice weather at that time. Western Europe also has excellent trains so you could pick 2 major cities and divide your time. I would also recommend looking into some activities, like a walking tour, or food tour, cooking class etc. as that's a nice comfortable way to see/do something unique without having to navigate it all yourself. Other suggestion might be to look into a guided tour for the whole/part of your trip, as it's a nice way to meet people. There are plenty of bus tours for different age groups in Western Europe. Good for you for planning this, you can totally do it!
Gloria
Lots of good suggestions for you Sara. As someone in your exact situation back in the early 90's ( no internet) I went to Europe- France and Germany. It was great. Of course you can do it. To maximize your enjoyment my advice is 1. Determine what you enjoy most- is it beaches, scenery, culture, architecture, history, people? Let that be a key guide. 2. Don't try to do too much or move from place to place too much -unless you just want to road trip- and stay in a smaller city or town in the region that fits your style.
Janet
Not so much in November. I always look for somewhere warm in the winter.
Gloria
Turkey and Greece can be nice in November - depends what you like to do. Summer can be too hot in Europe, too
Deborah
Hi Sara. I took a trip to North Vietnam shortly after my marriage ended. I was 49 years old, had no Vietnamese beyond hello and thank you, and I had an absolutely wonderful time. I found it a very safe country and the people were lovely -kind and welcoming. It was easy to get around and once I mustered my courage. I was very proud of myself for going, and was inspired to continue my solo travels. I did a solo trip to Morocco this year in fact!
Deborah
So I guess it almost doesn't matter where you go, it only matters that you do. Choose someplace you've always wanted to visit, and make the leap.
Li
Ireland? Scotland? Great Britain?
Li
I did my first solo trip when I was 21 to England and Scotland....if you have questions, ask away!
Nikki
Took my first solo trip to Bali a couple years ago and I was super nervous too. I only booked my flight and first night hostel and winged the rest as I met different people. It is one of the best trip I have ever taken. Easy to travel, book things last min, do a hike, or yoga over the rice fields, or lay on the beach. There's so many areas to visit, and things to do. It's also freaking cheap.
Carrie

Stay in a treehouse in Guatemala Earth Lodge. A Canadian and American own it and the property is amazing. They can also recommend many other cool places to stay and interesting places to go

Please be aware and careful about any of these suggestions and check them out before you decide. Just saying be aware.
Sara
Of course.

Hong Kong, you don't want to feel lonely! I did a lot of solo trips last year for the very first time to Bali, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong and China. Hong Kong, Thailand and Japan are the best, buy considering the language, Hong Kong definitely!

AUSTRALIA is by far the best backpacking or travel country I have ever been to. It is very well set up for tourists.
Kamala
I did a solo trip to New Zealand and I felt like it was the perfect trip to do by myself as a woman. I felt so confident in that country, I even hitchhiker by myself, which I have never done otherwise.
Heidi
Please let us know where you end up going I'm curious. .....I wouldn't do an all inclusive that's not adventurous. I agree with all of the europe suggestions. Australia too but it's too far for 10 days....Europe anywhere is awesome. If you are comfortable driving renting a car makes it nice for traveling solo.....if you don't like a place just drive away! I'm excited for you!
Sara
Thanks, Heidi. I really appreciate the support.
Jane
I took a river cruise on my first solo trip. They really looked after everything. It as safe and I met some nice people.

I travel alone all the time. Italy for 10 days on my own. No problems at all. I have also tried a couple of group travel and loved it. G Adventures and Bamboo. Met some life long friends on those trips! Enjoy and just be aware of your surroundings and lots of articles online about single travel.
Sara
Awesome advice. I never considered group travel.

Well im 42 this year... i never started traveling until i was 38... How i did was a walked into a travel agency and asked for a direct flight somewhere hot and cheap... I told the lady that i had never really traveled before... She suggested Cuba... To be very honest i was freaked out and said it was important that i go somewhere safe... and somewhere that has a beautiful beach... like the pictures you see in Travel magazines... She said i would love Cayo Santa Maria (all in it was $850 for flight food and accomodation for 8 days... I just got back again from Cuba on Tuesday and paid the same... probably could've gotten cheaper if i wanted) once i arrived people in my friends list om facebook told me i had to go to Havana... So i took the suggestion and bussed 4hrs to Havana and stayed for 2 nights... than went back to Cayo Santa Maria... Since than ive been back 8 times... i love Cuba... its just a 6hr flight to Varadero (i use sunwing.ca its always the cheapest) you can either stay in Varadero or stay in Havana... if you stay in Veradero most hotels are within 30mins of the airport and if you stay in Havana its about 2hrs... Transfers are part of all packages... Varadero might be the best for your first time... go for 8 days and than go to Havana for 1 or 2 nights in the middle... go see Bueno Vista Social... amazing night of dinner and music... this trip can be super comfortably done for 2k.
Sara
I have been to Cuba and you are right, it is beautiful. I Love your story, Donovan. That was such a cool thing for you to do and I really appreciate you sharing it. I don't know why, but I see this trip in a city. Thanks so much and you are right - Havana is the coolest.
Leanne
I have travelled to Italy and holland several times . In holland they speak 7 languages and love to speak English! Both are great but in November probably want somewhere alittle warmer. Have fun !
Suzanne
Cuba is not a good idea right now. They suffered quite a bit of flooding and damage from Hurricane Irma !
Arlene
Highly recommend Puerto Vallarta lots of non stop flights safe town to explore stay right downtown on Malecon water front maybe the Rosita gorgeous old Mexican hotel. Pm me if you want some more help or info.
Barb
I have soloed for a no. of yrs. to Puerto Vallarta & have stayed @ a no. of different places because of my comfort now...I would suggest the Royal Decameron Complex, all inclusive pkg....many Canadians stay there & that was my first stay...love this place, as do many & you will see why when you are there!!
Arlene
I agree Barb just will pay single supplement if travelling alone but Bucerias is great safe town outside PV And Royal Decameron is fun.
Barb
Yes, somethimes the price is the same as double but worth the little more if needed!
Christin
Good for you. I'm in similar/different situation. Hear you. Go girl
Eve
New York, San Francisco, LA, New Orleans, Arizona (grand canyon, monument valley), Montreal... Lots of interesting places to visit on this continent, and cheaper than Europe/South America/Asia, especially if you bus down to Washington State and fly out from there. When I started traveling solo a few years ago I baby-stepped it and started with short trips not too far from home and not too "exotic". It builds your confidence and gives you the travel bug without being too stressful. But maybe you wanna go all the way and that's fine too! Another suggestion is if you know someone who lives in another city or country, doesn't have to be family or someone close to you, just someone you can hang out with a little bit and who can show you around or help you orient yourself, and still allow you to visit around by yourself, that might be a good idea to start. Just my 2 cents
no matter what you think, it'll go better than you think and it'll be easier than you think! Good luck and enjoy!
Sara
Great thoughts, Eve. I have been to many of those places with my ex and am thinking outside of NA will really push me. New Orleans is one of my fav cities. I would reco that for anyone!!
Laura
Iceland is very safe and easy to travel in, at least in the summertime. Practically everyone speaks English.
Rudy
Depends on your interests. If it's beaches and tropical locales then start with Belize . English speaking, instead of Spanish and cheap (comparable to mexico) The flights are cheap and short into Belize city and a quick boat ride takes you out to the two main islands of Ambergris cay and Cay Caulker. One is more laid back and less built (Caulker) up but both great. Amazing snorkeling , fishing etc. And the mainland coast has lots of cool little beach town spots like Hopkins dangriga and placentia.
Julie
There is a travel advisory for Belize. Crime rate on tourist attacks has escalated.
Tanya
The jungle lodges are really amazing. The Mayan ruins and cave systems are so fun to explore. In many cases all guests dine together in the evening so it is a nice way to meet people.
Heather
A Mediterranean cruise is great
Sara
Thanks, Heather. Cruising is awesome, but not sure that will push me out of my comfort zone.
Heather
You unpack once, have great entertainment and meet lots of great people. You have the choice to take excursions, or venture out on your own when in port.
Heather
An easy way to see some amazing places and for a reasonable cost
Patricia
Check out this website. I know Debbie and Lori...they provide great trips for great value, all women and very safe.

I had the same experience awhile back. Why don't you start with something where you will meet people. A friend of mine recommended a yoga retreat in Mexico called Hamarama. I haven't been but it looks like a great solo experience. Or a club med- something to ease your way towards a city like London or NYC solo. The other thing is to take a course somewhere like Italy where you will be sure to meet people in the class...best of luck. It does get easier!! Pam
Sara
Thanks Pam, but I am ok not meeting people.
Janet
Sara I solo travel and have been a lot of places. Dress appropriate, treat people with respect. It all works out.
Janet
I sometimes think it would be ok to travel with someone but they could not be needy. I am heading yo India on the 26th
Mayette
I took all my first solo trips within North America. I wanted to get used to being by myself before I ventured somewhere really foreign. I didn't want to overwhelm myself with being alone and not knowing how to get around. I knew I'd get intimidated and/or frustrated and then probably scare myself from traveling solo again. I did road trips first in places loved ( Northern California) and the I went to Hawaii on my own. My first big solo trip, which I enjoyed immensely, was 10 days in the Maritimes. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Go somewhere that makes you a little uncomfortable, but not so much that you're confined to your room. Just what worked for me. Good luck -I'm excited for you!
Sara
I am from the Maritimes and you are right, it's gorgeous. Thanks for your support Mayette.
Stephen
Cruise out of San Diego or LA to Mexico or Vallarta Marina is a nice controlled environment to stay and venture from other than that an all inclusive down there also relatively safe and cost effective short flight. for a November trip with English being workable other than that see where your budget will take you at an all inclusive and research it from there
Haven
I went to ubud Bali solo last summer in July. It was such a cool experience. I'm a yogi so I did a ton of that and I opted to stay at a hostel where I met other solo travellers, but most accommodations are actually guest houses, aka you stay in gorgeous houses for super cheap and are served breakfast. Lots to do and experience there! But in terms of travelling on your own but not going too far out of your comfort zone - anywhere "western." Aka If there's a cheap deal to a place in Europe you're keen on. Bali is a long long flight. ...Going far away though might make you regret later not seeing more than one city while you were there. There are amazing and diverse places in the states and Canada etc that might be a fun "first solo trip" for way cheaper before going off continent
Angela
10 days..not much time, especially if you are factoring in flights. We spent 10 days in Barcelona and still didn't see everything that amazing city has to offer. You can get by there only speaking English and the tapas are out of this world!
Janet
I thought 10 days very short. But take what you can. I go for 6 months.
Vicki
I travel solo but i go to places where i know people.
like family and relatives, school mates, etc facebook friends. The world has become smaller.
Brittney
Good for you!! Everyone should travel solo - such an amazing experience. Wherever you go, if you go with an open mind, expecting to find friends, you will
I've travelled solo as a woman in the following places and have felt very safe. They've also been places that provided a great combination of things to do: museums, cafes, bars, hiking, people-watching, sightseeing; a little something for everyone.
- London. Everyone says it's expensive, but it's like any major city, and you have to account for the pound exchange which is the same deal anywhere in the UK. Wonderful city and lots of great day trips.
- Venice and Lido di Venezia, and nearby islands. I lived there for three months, twice, and have gone back three times since. Nearly everyone speaks English. It's amazing, though expensive.
- Tuscany - a great trip over your time frame would be Pisa, Lucca, and Florence, maybe even San Giumignano and/or Siena. Knowing Italian is helpful but absolutely not necessary to get by!
- Pompeii, Sorrento, and Capri. Same as above.
- Nice, France to Pisa. Stopover in Cinque Terre. Could even carry on to Florence. Amazing.
- Maui, Hawaii. All of it. You could also pop over to other islands. I've been twice on my own and will go back again.
- Newfoundland, if you're in to that sort of thing. St. John's is amazing, though small for 10 days. You'd want to venture out. Full of the nicest people on earth and one of my favourite places in Canada- not on a lot of people's radar.
- Cartagena, Colombia. Super safe, beautiful, interesting, wonderful people. Lots of good day trips.
- Portland, OR. Great place to go on a budget! You could carry on to the coast for some quieter time after the city - Manzanita and Cannon Beach.
Super excited for you!! Have fun!!
Sara
Thanks Brittney, feeling pumped.
Christin
It's the best way to learn about yourself. I went to England and Spain, and had so many experiences. Some good some bad but all learning!!
Tara
Hawaii nice for Nov, you can often find a good deal. Oahu busiest, lots of hotel choices in Waikiki, car not necessary. Maui, Kaui, Big Island quieter but really best to have a car. If Maui and no car, Kihei is a good town with lots of beaches, I rent a bicycle. It's a long beach town, try and find a place in the middle for convenience. Many units are actually apartments or condos with kitchens, saves $ on food which is pricey there. Further afield I'd recommend Dublin. It's a small walkable fun friendly city with lots to see and do. Never felt unsafe. Ireland isn't big so you could go on day trips by bus, train or tours and see lots of amazing places. The people are great and so is the food. Most people eat in the Pubs, comfy and convivial. Weather will be similar to Vancouver but possibly cooler, take layers and a raincoat. Look for hotels or vacation rentals on the edges of the downtown, better deals and quieter. I am planning my return! Have a great time!
Heather
I did my first solo trip to Maui. I felt quite comfortable as it is the USA and it is friendly and safe also gorgeous. I stayed in a condo. Good luck.
Paulette
Sara this came across my feed today and I immediately thought of you
Sara
Thanks for thinking of me Paulette. I am ready for this liberating change.
Paulette
You can do it, I believe you said previously, that you had travelled as a couple to many destinations, so the travel bit will not new to you, just the alone bit, but, you have the advantage of knowing who you are or better yet rediscovering who you are. As part of a couple, we sometimes loose site of who we are as an individual Say hello to yourself again, it is/can be quite enjoyable.
Sara
Thank you.
Aimée
Did this a couple times years ago and had the most amazing trips of my life! When you're alone, you're more likely to engage more with the locals, which is a great way to really get to know a city. Both times I went to Portland, OR. People there are notoriously friendly (although, of course, there are certain parts of town where one shouldn't try to make friends, but that will be abundantly obvious), and I even had a kind couple walk me to where I was going when I was lost (I wasn't that lost, but I accepted anyway). Highly recommend, just ensure that you're safe, and maybe leave some info with friends on where you're going, where you're staying, and for how long. If you're extra cautious, you could also check in with them each day or every few days. Have a wonderful time, wherever you end up going!
Sara
Great suggestions, Aimee.
Marlene
I second London England. Yes it rains but umbrellas work fine. Tube is great. All museums free. I went solo a few years ago and had such a fabulous time. Saw 2 shows. Met friendly people everywhere. I also have been to Asia alone - Vietnam. It was a great experience. I joined a tour there.
Enjoy yourself wherever you end up
Chilly
Singapore in Asia
Sara
I really want to go but a 20 hour flight when I only have 10 days may be a bit much.
Janet
Sara that is why I said Mexico the time limit. You could go to an all inclusive drink all night and sleep all day at Cancun take some side trips to Chichen Itza and Xcaret.. Or go to Puerto Vallerta lots of bars and beaches full of Canadians and Americans. Nice soft walking. Or go to Mexico City there is a lot of art there on the streets and in the Museums. It is really about what you want to do. Or there is Costa Rica for eco tours or learn to surf.
Janet
Or you could go help with the disaster relief in southern Mexico
Rita
Try Holland Amsterdam everyone there speaks English and the hostels are affordable and very nice
Sara
That is definitely a contender! Thanks, Rita.
Laurie
Dublin. Lovely city and people! You could do a bus tour to Northern Ireland - very beautiful!
Michael
Malaysia...lots of English, AMAZING food, mostly nice people, beaches, wilderness, cities, near to Thailand, Singapore.....
Karen
Yes, Amsterdam is lovely . Stay in the museum district, take the trams , everyone speaks English and it is a non stop flight from YVR. Went fir a week in March and loved It !
Nancy
England is the place to go.....no problem understanding them and so many places to see that are so interesting......history comes alive!
Heather
For your first trip try a tour in Europe. This way you get your feet wet and build your confidence and learn where you would like to visit more.
Areti
Go to Rome!!!!! People are so friendly and the City is stunning! I did it when I got divorced...scariest thing I ever did and the most incredible experience of my life!
Shelagh
Look up a vrbo for easy accommodations that feel safe and a place like home. Most major cities have several that are managed by an established company. A good way to have peace of mind. Have done it several times while traveling alone with kids.
Janet
I like Hostel Bookers. Always find something. Some are private rooms but you meet others and get ideas of where else to go.

How about a volunteer holiday? IVHQ has some great destinations and various types of volunteering(teaching, construction, conservation, and many more). I did the turtle conservation in Costa Rica and it was an amazing experience. Accommodation is rustic, its a great way to meet people and immerse yourself in the local culture. Generally you work for part of the day and weekends off. Gives you lots of opportunity to explore or take language lessons. Its inexpensive! Another website you can look at for organized tours is responsibletravel.com.

I like the idea of volunteering. That said they charge money to volunteer,. One I was looking at was $3000 for two weeks. I could fly there rent a place and buy food for way less. It is big business. How much of the money you pay do you think actually goes to the home stay family you board with?
Kathryn
Check IVHQ their prices are very reasonable. I think the average for 2 weeks is about $500us depending on where you go (Hawaii is $985). I did a lot of reseach before I chose them.
Janet
Kathryn thanks will check them out. I always liked the idea of volunteering but what I saw was big business and met some in Central and South America and in Asia . And saw what the locals actually got . I do volunteer at home and love to give back but dislike big business taking advantage.
Carolyn
Scotland - incredible scenery and friendly people and you must go to Loch Ness to search for Nellie.
Sara
I was there in university. It is indeed beautiful.
Sara
I really like this idea, Kathryn and Janet mentioned it as well. I'm not sure it will work for this go round but love the idea for next time.
Chris
A great option as well is to connect with G Adventures or a similar outfitter. G immerses you in the culture of the location and provides access to experiences you wouldn't normally have access to. This includes staying with the locals. As the guides speak English and the native language you can relax knowing you don't have to deal with that barrier. In previous trips I have met some amazing people from around the world. There is a G Adventures outlet on 4th and Arbutus area.
Shirley
Chris I agree. I have done alot of solo trave with G Adventures - met great people and visited amazing places. Never felt like I was alone but was able to wonder off on my own or in smaller groups if needed. Lots of different types of travel to choose from also.

London or santorini island greece

They have a thing called Her mail on this site . If u r travelling solo you can post and ask if any journey woman would mentor in the city u r going to. It's great
Linda
Thank you ... I'll check that out.
Kim
This April I volunteered for a week at the Costa Rica animal centre - they are super sweet & it is very reasonable. $30 us/day room & 3 meals a day included. You can find them here on Facebook
Karen
An easy way to get your feet wet would be with something like Seattle or San Francisco, where there are lots of attractions close together and great transit.
Shelagh
Oh San Francisco is an awesome idea! Very friendly!!! Lots of people use the public transit which is efficient and runs everywhere. The day pass lets you hop on and off the cable cars! You can even bus out to the golden gate visitors plaza.
The only thing to plan is a booking for Alcatraz. Those tickets sell out ahead of time.
Otherwise it's a great city for walking between sights and good food
Margaret
London would be my 1st thought....get decent airbnb and Oyster card and your all set - many things to see for free there!!
Janet
Better in the summer than in November.
Margaret
Janet lol to me London anytime is good - was just there and I'm sure the weather will be better in November than it was in aug lol
Janet
Margaret when I lived there one year there was 2 weeks of summer in May.
Shelagh
March was lovely this year!
Janet
Maybe not Mexico this year. Second earthquake. Wow
Julia
Bali would be amazing and you could do a retreat. Lots of women go solo. Only downside is the distance and connecting flights.
Julia
Just to add to that, I'm going to Bliss Sanctuary in two weeks. It's a nice mix of pampering (unlimited spa sessions), gourmet food, activities and sightseeing, yoga/mediation and relaxation.
David
Ireland is amazing but time of year might not be right for weather. You could fly to Dublin or Shannon. People there are so friendly and it's cheaper than Scotland or England
David
If you decide on Ireland I can pm you details of different places
Sara
Thanks, David. I love Ireland. It is exactly as you describe and it would be a perfect option, but I went there with my ex husband when we started out, so would prefer to avoid old spots and make new memories. It really is a great suggestion though. Any other ideas?
David
I haven't been but heard New Zealand is amazing. My sister was there last year
David
Another option Portugal.
Patrick
Japan...Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and especially Sapporo are all English-friendly...you can venture out into Japanese culture at your own comfort level and retreat back into Western style quite easily...very safe country, I could go almost anywhere, anytime, with absolutely no fear for my personal safety...
Sara
Sooooo . . . Thanks from the bottom of my heart for all your awesome suggestions. I think I have landed on Singapore for my solo foray into travel. Do you think two weeks in that country is too long? I am trying to keep it simple for this go round. Really appreciate your feedback.
Janet
If you do head up to Malaysia a very cool place. Kuala Lumpar and the Batu Caves pretty amazing.
Janet
I do not love Singapore. It is commercial and lots of shopping. People fly from all over the world to shop there. I am more a traveller. I am off to India on Tuesday for 6 months. Alone
Aimee
Way Tooo long u will be so bored!!!!
I did by myself
Two weeks---
One week Singapore
One week Malaysia
Malaysia is the best... Singapore has amazing food too but Malaysia is more cultured. Do both countries. Both easy for traveling and ppl speak English. Go diving in Malaysia.
Aimee
Im heading alone travelling with my 18 month old. I'm a single mom. We are going to Ireland. This will be my first trip with my baby alone internationally. I can't wait.
Singapore would not be on my list
I would choose
Malaysia and Thailand together
I've been to all three
My three weeks in Thailand was amazing nov/dec 2013 when I did not have a baby. Went solo.
Week 1- Chiangmai- Thai massage course I met so many ppl and I still see them and hang with them around the world now. Took the one week course and I still practice Thai massage on my friends and family. And got one everyday at my school. Easy way to meet ppl.
Did tours on the weekends.
Week 2- Chalong- did a Muay Thai training camp for one week. Met tons of ppl and also met up with some in my trip to Australia so u will
Meet ppl. One week camp chill with new ppl and weekends did tours
Week 3- koh phi phi island did my open water diving course to 30 m I also met many new diving friends and have met with them Around the world to dive like Egypt in 2015.
Weekends again toured around.
So this was my three week trip in Thailand. Just packed it in with self education and training and it was perfect. I was busy- i was healthy and meeting new ppl in all three activities and towns. It was safe too as I was apart of these activities and after we would all hang out. Never alone unless u choose to be alone.
Malaysia I spent one week relaxing on the beach in lankawi- loved every moment of it and ate roti chanai everyday all day mmm yum!!! Food is the best in Thailand and Malaysia goooo there!!!!
Paulette
Congratulations on making your choice - Enjoy your time
Sara
Thanks, Paulette. I really appreciate you saying that.
Dana
Have a great time Sara! Singapore is a fun, safe and easy place for a first travel foray. It is a great mix of bustling modern metropolitan and lots of culture. The food is amazing, be adventurous try as many different things as you can. Two weeks is a bit long but honestly you could spend days going into the shops in the Indian neighbourhood. If you find it getting too long, book a quick trip to Malaysia. That is something you can do while you are there and at the last minute.
Enjoy!
Laurie
Sarah Holland, I agree with Paulette. Congratulations. Part of travelling is simply going thru all that stuff, like getting your paperwork in order, getting on the plane and thru customs stuff, getting to your hotel, figuring out transportation, and FOMO of missing out on something that when you come back someone says Whaat you didnt see xyz! I've travelled to Africa by myself on my first trip and went on a safari. It was a dream come true. I simply got to a major city; met the tour and I had time to breathe, see amazing wildlife, experience culture. My next trip was with another person. So what ever your first trip IS for you, enjoy the experience and know that you will wobble in your boots and then meet the smile of a fellow traveller. All is generally good! Safe travels.
Christin
Sara I wouldn’t stay more than a few days in Singapore. Been there a few times on business and much prefer Malaysia, Thailand rich in culture and authenticity.
Shu
Use Singapore as your base. You are already there, so use the time to explore the region. I don't shop there, as it is $$$, but there are lots of places to explore... Funnily enough, it is a place I enjoy going to view wild life! Off the beaten tourist tracks. Bird watching is great.SAFE !!! It is also the place to get medical help if you get into medical trouble in the rest of the region. Sg is expensive, especially if you decide to go shopping in all the trendy, high end haute couture places. But the 'burbs are fun to explore. Make sure you get a tourist transit pass (right from the airport). Public transit (bus and rapid transit) is a breeze to use although, as with any big city, there will be the usual headaches and hiccups. No place is free from malfunctions. Like, if you wanna blame someone for the system breakdown, good ole Bombardier too had a supply contract at one time...... Just sayin'.
Be adventurous. Sg is a "foodie" and urban wild-life paradise. The "hawker centres" there are treated like the locals' kitchens. A great many S'poreans eat out instead of cooking. That said, Sg boasts a very high personal income bracket. They have money to burn. So higher end restaurants will be expensive. Don't be afraid to shop in the local grocery stores and supermarkets. There is no bargaining in these places. The price you see is the price you pay. I kept my budget low by shopping most meals in such places (NTUC Fairprice comes to mind... Their equivalent of the great Canadian Superstore price wise) and putting my ( local fruit, roast chicken, buns) purchases in my back pack with a cooler gel pack (cheap enough to leave behind). If you want more practical info, pm me!
Tonya
I've been to Singapore twice. Four days max. Great jumping off point to the region though
Sara
Thanks, Tonya. Any suggestions from there that won't stress me out.
Tonya
I have been to Thailand and while busy and hectic in some places, I also find it strangely soothing. We took my mom for her 65th on a G adventures tour. She loved everything about it but the food. She's a picky eater
Tonya
The north of Thailand is fabulous. I think we will go back in feb or march.
Kiran
What about a not too expensive tour company...G adventures has always been amazing! Good luck...I travel a lot alone & love it!
Jeremiah
Singapore is great as a hub airport to fly to Borneo or Bali! Bali is a short flight and would be a great solo trip! Enjoy!
Jeremiah
And many other destinations...
Jennifer
Good for you Sara! "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step"...as a fellow divorced/solo Traveller, just know you can do it, and that others are always willing to offer help when asked. Have fun on your adventures!
Sara
Thanks, Jennifer.
Shu
Sara,
Just a heads up: when you are visiting places of worship, be mindful of female dress codes. Especially for religious places in Asia, it is best to coverup. Nothing skimpy (by their standards). Best bet, a below the knee skirt/sarong or light capris, a high(er) neckline t-shirt rather than sleeveless tank tops (minimal cleavage). Some places also require a head covering of sorts. I got away with a very, very light shawl. That became my souvenir.
BTW, the water and street food in Sg is safe to consume even for us unseasoned travellers with rather delicate guts. If you do venture out of Sg, another thing to pack around with you is a roll of toilet paper, or at the very least, a packet of Kleenex. I found myself in dire situations in Malaysia’s and Indonesia’s public washrooms.....
Janet
Be respectful of the cultures in the country you are in Muslims cover up. Even in England I carry TP.
Sara
Great advice, Shu. I really appreciate it.
Shu
Sara no problem. you're welcome and, have a wonderful trip!
Scott
Oh my yes. I have a ziploc in my cargo pocket with a few folds of tp. Turns out a lot of public toilets a) charge for entry and b) charge for tp. And many of those that provide tp have it in a dispenser outside the stalls.
My little ziploc has saved my asterisks a number of times.
Julie
Cuba ur awesome
Erica
Hi Sara! I haven't read any of the posts here but I did a solo trip in Costa Rica and had a fabulous time! I wouldn't stay in the city though, definitely get out and travel but it was relatively easy to get around to some of the remote small towns.
There are many places you can visit within the country and I found it quite safe and very friendly.
Gry
I'd consider Japan. It gets you out of your comfort zone, but extremely safe. No worries about pickpockets or language, accomodating people... exotic yet safe. Yeah... places in Europe will be relatively easy.. but if you want safe, convenient, and easy... Tokyo with a side trip to Kyoto/OSaka/KObe
Sara
Me again with a change of trip plans that are now booked. Heading to Hong Kong for 5 days then off to Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand for 8 days. I am scared and stoked. Is there a word for that? Staked! Thanks to everyone again.
Paulette
Maybe that's scaked! Have fun you will be just fine
Scott
Whooo! Good for you
Shu
Eat your heart out. You will have a great adventure.

Make sure you let us know how your trip went. Have a blast!
Sara
I will. Thank you, Kathy.

I'm going to Chiang Mai in February. It looks and sounds like a cool place. Always walk with confidence. Thai people are very friendly. There are lots of Expats in Chiang Mai...Google Expats in Chiang Mai.
NurseTra
Pm me if you want some advice about Hong
Suzanne
Congratulations on your first solo trip. You are awesome and your trip will be a great adventure.
Darryl
Sara look up elephant nature park. I really suggest booking a day trip. I went last April.
Janet
Love Chiang Mai! Went for the first time last December/January and can't wait to go back. If you want any suggestions about where to stay, eat and things to do, just let me know.
Rhiana
Sara check out Pingdoi Hualin hotel in chiang mai, it’s awesome and it located right on the edge of the old city. I’ve stayed there as have a few friends and nothing but glowing reviews.
Paulette
Open eyes and an open mind - you'll be fine and have a ball!
Pancer
if you are in chiang mai....go to pai its nearby and alot of fun
Linda
Just looked at some pics of Pai Canyon and it looks amazing. I'm also going to Chang Mai so will check out Pai for sure. Thanks for the tip.
Jeremiah
I agree! Great place to get away.
Rudy
Best food ever !!!!
Susan
Congrats to you! Chang Mai is lovely, a bit cooler than the south. Check out some guided day trips to get around. Have fun!
Juliana
Yayyyy!! Good for you Sara! Ive been "forced" to travel solo many times and it was nerve wrecking at first but now I love it. I always meet great people and make new friends from around the world!! Seems like you got yourself some great suggestions on here! All the best!
Sara
Thanks so much, Juliana. I really appreciate the support.
Shelley
I did my first 'solo' travel last year I went to Portugal! A place I have wanted to go since I was a kid. I booked a tour but quickly figured out I felt very safe in Portugal and would go back on my own in a heart beat!
Sonja
I'm thinking you should choose a cruise. Pick any destination. Excursions won't be on your own. Met many solo travelers on cruises. Easy to meet people and see the world.
Gigliola
U.K. Ireland Australia Spain Portugal Italy Greece Cypress. All countries that are very familiar with English speaking visitors!!
Jennifer
My first solo trip was London and Paris. I was nervous about language but the majority of the people I encountered were very helpful and knew English as well!
Jennifer
Europe is amazing for "finding yourself." I took this trip after my longterm ex and I split up. It's like learning to love life again. Highly recommend!
Sara
Well Europe will be next on the list. I am up for learning to love again. Thanks, Jennifer.
Carol
I am taking a solo trip in October/November. I will be gone for 5.5 weeks and will be taking in as many sights in Australia and New Zealand as I can.
Sara
Have an awesome adventure, Carol!
Verna
Good for you! Although I organize group tours for people on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, I have also done some solo adventures. One of the best cities/places that I found to do a first solo tour is Amsterdam. You will find the flavours of Europe, however most, if not all people speak English. I can give the name of a hotel that is central if you want one. It is the Tulip Inn that is just a few steps away for the Central Train Station. Amsterdam is very walkable and a beautiful, welcoming place. You can PM me for more information if you would like.
Sara
Amsterdam is on my list, Verna. I will be in touch for tips if I go in the future. Thanks!
Verna
I have been to many places in Europe and am happy to help! Leaving for the Galapagos and Machu Picchu soon and this page was a tremendous help for matching room mates for some good travellers. Thank you Chris!!!
Kelly
Sara - have you decided on a destination?? Just curious.
Sara
Yes, Kelly. I am heading to Hong Kong on Nov. 11 and after a bit of time there, Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. I am nervous and excited. Thanks for asking.
Verna
Enjoy! I am sure you will love it. Hong Kong is large but easy to get around.
Kelly
Wow!! I am impressed - I was curious because I've never really traveled on my own before either!! There were lots of suggestions and so many beautiful places to see - it would be hard to know where to start!! Looking forward to hearing about it afterwards (I hope you post) Have a safe and enjoyable time!
Janet
I am in India if you are looking for some excitement. Enjoy
Mel
Chiang Mai is a great city & Thailand is general is such a good country to visit. I went to Thailand solo for a month when I was single a few years ago and went to a lot of temples, fell in love with the gentle Thais, got blessed by a monk. It was a spiritual trip.
One thing I didn't do that I would now, is to go and eat solo at dinner. Sit at the bar if it's easier for you. I wish I had more confidence back then so so that, verse get take out and eat dinner in my hotel room.
Have a wonderful time!
Nathanae
London would be an easy city to travel to.
Janet
Not the best weather at the moment

My first solo trip after my divorce was to Italy. I spent 4 days in Rome by myself wandering the street and reading eat, pray, love! I then joined a cycle tour (a Canadian company and this all inclusive tour was for recreational bikers). Spend 6 days and night with that group and then travelled to Sorrento and spent 4 more days exploring that area. I came home a different person than when I left. Grounded, and clear in the knowledge that the world is big, and I want to see most of it. I know do bike tours in far away places every other year and tag on alone time before and after each trip. I hope you find the best adventure for you to start your new chapter. Tip travelling solo in Europe is very common...not like in the states. Good luck
Shelagh
Good advise! What's the name of the bike tour company? And how 'recreational' is it? I tore my Achilles two years ago and just getting back into shape now.
Shelley
Shelagh Martinusen it’s butterfield and Robinson. They have a full range of cycle and walking tour for all abilities. Good luck

Just recently went to Rome and London with my 13 yr old son... It was great!!
Kelly
Sara - I see that you've chosen your destination. Good for you!! I'm sure it was a tough decision. So MANY places to see and so much good and helpful advice here - would make it tough to know where to start enjoying the world we live in. I've been following this group - in case I can get up the nerve to travel alone one day. Enjoy your vacation - I hope that when you come back you'll let us know how it went!!
Sara
Wow, Kelly. Thanks. I will. A month today. I will share when I get back and I hope that all those working up the nerve will go for it. Just booking the ticket made me feel more powerful. There is indeed a whole world out there. Thanks to everyone who have shared their experiences and suggestions.

I've taken my daughter to Paris and loved it! Can recommend a good company for booking a flat. We've since done london and Brussels. Loved them as well and felt safe and comfortable

London I used vrbo and in Brussels the same. There's a company that offers properties in downtown Brussels that had mixed reviews. I had someone recommend Place Flagey as a good location for Brussels and it was excellent! Good tram connections to the train station. A very family oriented area and only a 20 min walk to downtown (or 10 min bus ride).
Brussels is a central base for day trips to Luxembourg or Amsterdam.

I did Europe alone for a month two years ago, it was the most amazing thing I’ve ever done in my life. I did France, Italy, Greece and ended in Amsterdam. I did 9 cities in 30 days. If you have questions you can pm me
it’s scary, but it will be the best thing you’ve ever done. You only live once !

London, England! Stay in a hostel; and you'll be able to chat with lots of people. I belong to Hosteling International and stayed at their hostel two streets away from St Paul's Cathedral.

My first ever solo trip was to Greece in late October about 2yrs after my divorce, and it was wonderful. I only made arrangements for the first 3 nights in Athens and then took it from there using lonely planet as my guide.

Ireland! Widow here. Took a 2 week coach tour with Royal Irish Tours and loved every minute of it!

Iam goung to india solo dec 25 to feb. Looking to find a travel partner for some of the trip

Edinburgh is a great city to explore - museums, galleries, castles, botanical gardens, and friendly pubs.

I would recommend a guided trip. I’ve only ever did one, I was 16 on a school trip where I knew no one, it built the foundation for love of travel in me. You’ll be alone yet not alone. You can chose to share activities or not. The world is not a scary place! Have fun!!!
Shelley
Congrats. For my first trip I booked a tour. Loved it and s good way to get my feet wet.

Look into Road Scholar.

Did you go? How was it?!?
I completed my first solo trip in May. Went to Ireland with a 7 day stop over in Iceland on my way. Was the best trip ever!!!
Leanne
How did you get the stop over flight? Sorry if obvious. I've. It done it before but sounds ideal
Shelagh
Fly air Iceland and they allow a stop over up to 7 days for no additional fee
Shelagh
Then rent a happy camper van to get around!
Sara
I went last November. Hong Kong and Thailand. It was terrifying and liberating. An amazing experience.I am excited that you had an awesome trip too. Next spring I am off to Cambodia and Vietnam.
Colleen
Ok I just saw this post now, a year late - but HOW AMAZING ARE YOU!? "I want to start with something easy" and then you go to HK and Thailand. I would have suggested England or Australia LOL. Enjoy Cambodia and Vietnam - amazing places and amazing people

Good for you!!!

Solo travel is great! My first solo was to Beijing and I chose a tour. No language issues, tour picked up/dropped off at hotel, front of the line for all sites. Since 2011 I have now been to 5/7 continents - all solo. Including Beijing have done 2 tours and now much more confident in my travel savvy. I am currently in Egypt - solo.
Shelagh
Look at you go! I love the idea of checking off continents!
Claudia
Definitely make sure you know the customs and hand gestures before you go. You could be rude without knowing it. I have traveled solo on many occasions. I don't walk by myself at night , and stick to areas with plenty of people.
Cynthia
Has anyone travelled solo to Paraguay ?
Heather
well you could goto europe, take a tour which will give you a layout of the area. How to travel around etc then go on your own from there.
Shelagh
Parts of Europe are easy to do solo. The public transit is so organized. Paris would be awesome. Brussels is amazing. London, ireland. All very doable
Jennifer
Greek islands.

There is many companies that do cater to solo traveler... What would you like to do?
Julie
I would like to partake in a single seniors cruise or trip. HAHA
Peter
I go to VacationsToGo for singles cruises. Where you want to go ??
Julie
Peter I will have to check that site out. Destination with sun, beach/pool and drinks.
Peter
Julie I'm in !! I enjoy the cruising as a way to check out places to visit on a longer trip
Julie
Peter have you done a cruise before? I have not. I usually go to Mexico all inclusive.
Peter
Julie went on cruise from Vancouver down to Mexico with 5 stops ending in San Diego, 12 days total , was great . Like all inclusive on the move at sea !
Year before did a western Caribbean , also great
Peter
Unusually find a cruise for about $100 a day
Bernie
I would suggest Japan, actually; not a "scary" country because we are so familiar with them. Most people highly educated, low crime, many cities with fantastic history and easy to follow transit, great food, and quick to get to (9 hours each way, direct flight). Once you get there it is quite cheap to travel around the country on a rail pass.
Katie
I would STRONGLY recommend joining a small group trip in the country you are traveling to, even if it is just for part of the time you are there. G Adventures puts on some good ones in conjunction with National Geographic and the other agents in my office arrange their own all the time also. Here is an example of a trip of a lifetime to Morocco. This one, for instance, has a Canadian travel specialist who accompanies the group (my colleague Yvette) and local guides in the destination. It focuses on textiles in Morocco, stays at local lovely boutique hotels and will be all women. Let me know if you need help finding other mall group trips. I know many suppliers who offer all sorts of trips with different themes at different price points also. https://www.personaltravel.ca/.../morocco-textile-tour

I travelled alone for 3 weeks and wished I had done something like this. Next time!
Anna
Katie I went on an all women trip to the Galapagos. I’m still emotionally scarred.
We weren’t given keys to our cabin doors on the boat. A woman entered my cabin and put a five inch plastic cockroach between the sheets of my bunk bed. She did this while I was at the captain’s table for dinner.
Only thing I remember after spending 5 grand is crying for hours after being disrespected and insulted. And I didn’t eat anything for the last two days of the cruise. I wanted to get away from these people so much that I didn’t stay overnight at my hotel on the mainland even though I had paid already. Then I paid another $100 at the airport to change my ticket so I could leave immediately.
You’ve been warned!
Katie
Anna that sounds absolutely horifying! What tour company did you book this with?
Anna
Katie doesn’t matter. You sign a waiver not to sue and when a group of women get together they tend to act stupid. Petty. Mean.
Jealous.
My husband didn’t understand why I was so angry. So I spelled it out.
We were in the ocean. Traveling between islands in the Galapagos. Hours to reach the next island.
Had I been a person afraid of bugs and reared back and struck the back of my head against the upper bunk causing a brain hemorrhage...
Exactly how fast would I reach a hospital for steroids and bore holes?
Two weeks later our electrician ‘s apprentice was in our shed replacing a light fixture. He was on a ladder and my husband was on the floor behind him. When the apprentice saw dead wasps in the old fixture, he fainted dead away. My husband caught him as he fell.
Do you think he could have been hurt seriously had he been alone?
You have NO idea how a person will react.
So stop being assholes!
Annette
Anna it does matter because we want to know, so we never book with them.
Stacey
Years ago I did a tour with Intrepid, a couple actually. Morocco for 10 days and India for 5 weeks, it was amazing! Good for you and highly recommend it
Khairunn
Though an all inclusive is not my preferred mode of travel, years ago, when I did my first trip alone, I got a great deal to Puerto Plata. The nice thing there is if you find can find cheap deals to destinations at resorts in mexico and caribbean, they can be a steal and include all the food/drinks and can you leave you money for some group day trips. I met some really nice people from the day trips through the hotel. All these places speak English. Look for destinations that are more for singles as some resorts can be lots of couples. Or the other option I was given back then is to do a cruise, with lots of ports of call, so I could see more places and with cruises, you can pick ones that are for singles more so. Ask friends who have been, google them or ask a travel agent.
Mary
London and then Paris via the chunnel. easy-peasy.
Shelagh
Did something similar with my kiddo. We did london and Brussels. Super easy.
Susan
I would suggest booking with a tour company like Exodus, Exploreworldwide or gadventures. You can pay a bit extra for your own room. I like to get to a city a few days before and look around, get some sleep then toin the tour. Hoponhop off buse are great to get around.
Susan
Ive been traveling on my own 40 years - Ive had some exceptional trips. And use lonely planet web sites for info. Happy travels.
Sue
I did a holiday in Croatia with Wingbuddy. It was a guided bus tour for 10 days.
Marielle
Have been a solo traveller for 15+ years....my first outings were in Europe and my guide was Rick Steve’s travel books. I have also used Intrepid and gAdventure on numerous times and strongly recommend them. In two weeks I am going to Vietnam with gAdventure (national Geographic) and have been sharing accommodation. Have made life long friends. Enjoy
Donna
Have you looked into Diverbo.com or Angloville...they are SUPER fun and all you need is English!!! They do English immersion for Europeans and it is amazing! We are doing 5 this season...1 in Spain, 2 in Germany, 1 in Hungary and 1 in the Czech Republic. This has got to be the BEST way to learn about the culture of these cultures, make lasting friendships and "feel good" about helping others learn English, without having to teach. Highly recommend.

My first solo trip was a test to see if I would enjoy it. I went to Italy for 2 weeks and it was amazing!! Travelling solo is so freeing and Italy is so easy to travel in. I don’t know why people are suggesting tours when you specifically said you want to do a solo trip
Joanne
Do it!
Stacey
Ireland or Amsterdam, the people are very friendly and everybody speaks English. I am a solo female traveler and these two places were probably the easiest destinations for solo travel. Once you feel comfortable going solo you may never want to travel with others again, It is so nice to do what you want when you want that collaborating with others becomes difficult.
Jenny
London, tons to do, easy transportation on the tube, safe ( using common sense) direct flights. Also easy to take quick side trips, easyjet, ryanair the Chunnel.
Al
England, Ireland.
Really easy and beautiful

Solo Travel Guide for Beginners
Solo Travel Guide for Beginners
Congratulations on taking the first step towards your solo travel adventure! It's understandable to feel nervous, but rest assured, solo travel can be an incredibly rewarding and life-changing experience. Here are some tips to help you plan your first solo trip and build your confidence for future adventures.
Destination Suggestions
For your first solo trip outside of North America, consider destinations that are relatively safe, English-friendly, and easy to navigate. Here are some potential options:
- London, United Kingdom: With direct flights from many major cities, London is a great choice for a first-time solo traveler. It's an exciting and cosmopolitan city with plenty of attractions, excellent public transportation, and a vibrant culture.
- Dublin, Ireland: Dublin is a charming and walkable city with a rich history, friendly locals, and a lively pub scene. It's a perfect destination for those seeking a mix of culture and nightlife.
- San Juan, Puerto Rico: As a U.S. territory, Puerto Rico offers a taste of Caribbean culture without the need for a passport or language barriers. San Juan is a beautiful city with colorful architecture, stunning beaches, and a lively food scene.
Tips for Solo Travel
Here are some practical tips to help you make the most of your solo travel experience:
- Research and Planning: Spend some time researching your destination, accommodation options, and must-see attractions. Having a loose itinerary can help you feel more organized and confident.
- Stay Connected: Make sure to share your travel plans with family or friends back home and keep them updated on your whereabouts. Consider investing in a portable Wi-Fi device or an international SIM card to stay connected while traveling.
- Trust Your Instincts: Always trust your gut feeling and prioritize your safety. If a situation or location doesn't feel right, don't hesitate to remove yourself from it.
- Embrace the Experience: Solo travel can be a wonderful opportunity for self-discovery and personal growth. Embrace the freedom and flexibility of being on your own, and be open to new experiences and meeting new people.
Budget-Friendly Tips
While solo travel can be more expensive than traveling with others, there are ways to keep costs down:
- Accommodation: Consider staying in hostels or budget hotels, which can be more affordable than luxury hotels. Airbnb can also be a cost-effective option, especially for longer stays.
- Transportation: Use public transportation, such as buses, trains, or subways, whenever possible. Walking is also a great way to explore a city and save money.
- Food: Eat like a local by visiting markets, food stalls, or affordable restaurants. Cooking your own meals can also help you save money.
- Free Activities: Look for free walking tours, museums with free entry days, or simply wander and explore the city's parks and neighborhoods.
Remember, solo travel is all about stepping outside of your comfort zone and embracing new experiences. With proper planning, an open mind,

Hi there. I am recently divorced and have no experience with solo travel. I want to take my first alone trip in November but am quite nervous about it. English is my only language and I am thinking I might want to start with something a bit easy, but beyond North America. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking direct flight, stay in the city. My goal is to use this to build my confidence for my next trip. I can probably go for about 10 days but don't have bags of money to spend. Any advice? This is a big deal for me. Really pushing myself outside my comfort zone.
