Hey! Friends and I will be going to Japan in August for 10 days and we were hoping to seek some advice on which train passes to purchase and from where? Our basic itinerary is Tokyo -> Sapporo -> Osaka. We’ve looked into the JR pass already but we’re wondering if there’s more passes we should consider. Thank you!

Check if u even need one - look into JR Pass Calculator to see if you actually save $$ or barely break even. JR Pass requires additional steps to get reserved seats. https://m.jrpass.com/farecalculator

JR Pass will be the most comprehensive for getting around Tokyo and Japan!! I don't remember even buying other tickets or passes and we did Kyoto, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Osaka.

You can load up a transit fast pass at most 7Elevens for one of the local Tokyo lines. You can use that for snacks at the station as well.

JR Pass is only good for JR lines. When you get to Japan, get a Suica or Pasmo card so you can take all other local rail lines. You can even use those cards to pay at convenience stores and vending machines.

Ben Are these similar to the ICOCA card?

Anonymou Yes. They are all similar and work throughout the transit system.

If you are an Apple user, you can add a Suica pass right into your wallet.
For data, use the eSim Ubigi!

Japan Train Pass Recommendations

With your itinerary of Tokyo -> Sapporo -> Osaka, the Japan Rail (JR) Pass would be a great option to consider. The JR Pass allows unlimited travel on all JR trains, including shinkansen (bullet trains), making it an economical choice for long-distance travel within Japan.

Here are some recommendations for train passes based on your itinerary:

1. JR Pass (Nationwide)

The JR Pass is available in 7-day, 14-day, and 21-day durations. For your 10-day trip, the 14-day JR Pass would be the most suitable option. It covers travel on all JR trains, including the shinkansen, and can be used for the long-distance journeys between Tokyo, Sapporo, and Osaka.

The cost of a 14-day JR Pass is:

  • Ordinary: ¥46,890 (approx. $340)
  • Green Car (First Class): ¥73,920 (approx. $540)

You can purchase the JR Pass online or from authorized travel agencies before arriving in Japan.

2. Regional Passes

In addition to the nationwide JR Pass, you may also want to consider regional passes for specific areas you'll be visiting. These passes can provide additional flexibility and cost savings for local travel.

  • Tokyo Subway Ticket: If you plan to explore Tokyo extensively, you can purchase a Tokyo Subway Ticket, which provides unlimited rides on Tokyo's metro and some JR lines within the city limits.
  • Hokkaido Rail Pass: For traveling around Hokkaido, where Sapporo is located, the Hokkaido Rail Pass can be a cost-effective option. It covers most JR lines in Hokkaido, as well as some private railways.

Remember to factor in your travel dates, desired destinations, and the number of trips you plan to make when deciding on the most suitable pass or combination of passes.

Enjoy your trip to Japan!
