Planning on going to Tokyo,Japan for a week with my 18 year old son.Any insight on some reasonably priced hotels and must do things.

Meiji-jingu and Harajuku in one go. A little cool shrine for you and a crazy youth street for him. They’re right beside each other. and if you go from the shrine to harajuku and keep on going you can get to Omotesando which is a very fancy shopping area, great to look even if you’re not buying

I was looking up things to do.. it is overwhelming.
Has anyone visited an onsen? Would it be too cold to visit an onsen?

Rafiaetye i only ever visited indoor onsen/bathhouses but just heads up the ones I went to separate men and women into separate areas and you must strip naked. There are also some other unofficial/official rules you should look over online before you go- no visible tattoos and your towel should never touch the water (an unofficial rule I didn’t find out until after). A great experience though if you decide to go.

It’s super fun that you are going to Tokyo together! Here are some suggestions- I went in April 2012 so I’m not sure how they would compare in December: Ueno park & zoo (fun to walk around in, they have paddle boats in the shape of swans, not sure if they would be operational in Dec), Park Hyatt bar at night- drinks are expensive but stay for one and enjoy the view which is priceless, city hall observation deck for a view of the city- can sometimes see mt fuji, stop by a sumo stable and poke your head in to see the wrestlers train, tsukiji fish market for the freshest sushi you will eat in your life - can wake up very very early to see the blue fin tuna auction, imperial palace have beautiful gardens, not sure what they offer in Dec., Shibuya (& shibuya crossing) for great shopping, also enjoy the many vending machines that sell everything under the sun, electronic stores are worth poking your head into- the camera selection will blow your mind ... I think 1 week will allow you to see a lot, if you can swing it I highly recommend a night or two Kyoto. Enjoy!!

I went back in Apr 2017 for 2 weeks. You can check out my itinerary on my travel blog. http://boketto.rosannau.com/ We did goto in onsen called Ooedo Onsen - We used it as a night for accomodation as well as we did a late night ticket where you can sleep on recliner lounge chairs or on communal mats area. It's kind of a theme park type of deal and it has indoor and outdoor hot pools. If you have tattoos though, you will need to see if you can find any specific ones that allow that. https://daiba.ooedoonsen.jp/en/#access

We were in Tokyo 2 years ago for 5days. The on and off train pass is a great way. Be aware that it is a huge city with hundreds of trains. It can be confusing. We managed and we are in our late 50s.

Koenji is a great area to stay in. There is a hotel in the JR station that is affordable and really great. Also, amazing tempura down the road.
