Take it out as needed from an ATM. Find out which bank(s) have an agreement with your own to save fees.

Thanks for the tip, I am trying to not use $CAD as it's really low now, so atm is my last option.

So you already actually have Yen, you're just trying to decide how much to bring with you and how much to leave at home?

I have RMB, which is higher currently if to be exchanged with Yen than CAD, so just need to figure out how much i should take so that i dont over-exchange. I have heard that food in jp could be expensive or cheap, i just need to budget that for now.

Hate to say this but currency exchange in Japan is really bad. I took out Malaysia ringgit = to 1000 cnd on the return I lost close to 300. As for atm can only use at tourist information booth and 711 and even that was not full proof. Td bank card did not work so had to use rbc there.

Also 7 days to see all 3 places is not enough. I would stay at Tokyo for 7 days or kyoto osaka kobe for 7 days and there's a tourist pass for Jr line for the 3 cities for around 10 cnd can purchase at tourist information booth

Depends on what your planning to do. Japan is almost like spending in vancouver. Food is cheap if you buy from a market than a restaurant. But the portions are smaller but good.

I just came back from Tokyo. If your hotels is already paid for then about $25-80 CDN per day. Depending on what you do, subway is around $10, food is from $15-40 (yes, $15 is doable but it's "basic"). Attractions? Have fun!

I'm currently in Osaka! I want to say around 80 a day should be plenty. Right now my breakdown is $50 for meals, $10 subway, $20 recreation. All depends on what you want to do tho! Meals can be as low as $5 or as high as $30. Enjoy!

Currency Requirements for 7 Days in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto

Planning a trip to Japan can be exciting, but determining the appropriate amount of currency to carry can be a daunting task. In this blog post, we'll provide you with a comprehensive guide to help you estimate the amount of cash you'll need for a 7-day trip to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, excluding hotel expenses.

Daily Expenses

When traveling to Japan, it's essential to consider your daily expenses, which can vary depending on your travel style and preferences. Here's a breakdown of typical daily expenses:

  • Food: ¥3,000 - ¥6,000 per day (approx. $27 - $54 USD)
  • Transportation: ¥1,000 - ¥2,000 per day (approx. $9 - $18 USD)
  • Attractions and Activities: ¥2,000 - ¥5,000 per day (approx. $18 - $45 USD)
  • Shopping and Souvenirs: ¥2,000 - ¥5,000 per day (approx. $18 - $45 USD)

Total Estimated Costs

Based on the daily expenses outlined above, you can estimate the total amount of cash you'll need for your 7-day trip:

  • Minimum Budget: ¥49,000 - ¥77,000 (approx. $441 - $693 USD)
  • Mid-Range Budget: ¥63,000 - ¥119,000 (approx. $567 - $1,071 USD)
  • Higher Budget: ¥77,000 - ¥161,000 (approx. $693 - $1,449 USD)

Additional Tips

  • Carry a mix of cash and credit/debit cards for convenience and security.
  • Consider purchasing a Japan Rail Pass if you plan to travel extensively by train.
  • Budget extra for emergencies or unexpected expenses.
  • Research discounts, promotional offers, and money-saving opportunities before your trip.

Remember, these estimates are based on averages and can vary depending on your specific travel plans and spending habits. It's always better to have a bit more cash on hand than to run short during your trip.

Enjoy your time in the beautiful cities of Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions!
