Our experience is that the deals get scooped up and then there is just little to chose from as you get closer to the date. We've seen the prices go up when booking within a month or so.
Donna
I agree with Lee. I find things go up closer to the colder months. Also watch the tax. I sometimes find a cheaper hotel and tax at say $435. Then higher rate but tax only $135. So get better flight and accommodation usually cheaper.

Thank you all so much! I have done the Bahamas before without kids but that's it. So nerve wracking trying the right place/fit. Also my husband will only do Mexico if we see the ruins so I think that means Cancun. Again - so many helpful comments!!
Cortney
We booked our vacation to Los Cabos in October last year to fly out January 19 and air canada usually has a buy one get one half off deal every year! For two of us to go to a 4 1/2 star resort was $2300 direct flight from Calgary for 7 days All inclusive!
Donna
Good price. But remember Los Cobos is one of the most expensive places in Mexico. When we where there prices where very similar to here. Just so your aware.
Cortney
Donna we found the prices very cheap in Cabo. About the same as Cancun and Play del Carmen, just have to know where to shop and eat I guess !
Donna
I guess. We found it quit expensive. We have been all over Mexico and one tour guide we had said the.prices where about 30% higher there than anywhere else. This is only my opinion. I am not interested in pissing anyone off. Sorry.
Cortney
No me neither! Good to know, I'll have to pay more attention when we go back ! Haha
John
Cortney Paige Rhinehart - first time I have ever read where someone found the prices to be cheap in Cabo - tell us all where you eat and shop - thanks in advance - g.
Cortney
John we shop and aye right at the marina in Cabo San Lucas. We found that the only thing pricey was if you stopped and big bars like "the pink kitty". Go to places like The happy ending instead. $1 beers and cheap food but still trustable if you know what I mean! Around The happy ending their was a lot of shops to get souvenirs for dirt cheap!! Like $3 for t-shirts. We are going back in January for our wedding and once again got a really good deal at a 5 star resort!

Booking now may get you into the "Early Booking Bonus" that most offer. They have this program so they have more people booking early so they don;t have to discount in the end as much. Allows them to pre-fill seats at a solid rate without having to drop their pants last minute.
westjet doesn;t do a ton of last minute as they don;t pre-buy hotel space. sunwing and Transat on the other hand buys a lot of rooms ahead of time so they feel the squeeze towards the end if the still have inventory.
I would fly with Transat south but would stay away from sunwing an all cost...even if they give you a free holiday, they can still make your life miserable. Of course many people have good experiences but if a shitty one happens and it;s your only holiday for the year, would suck if it falls on you. Your holiday can go wrong with the others as well, your likelihood with sunwing is just that much higher!
Last minute deals also typically are left-overs, hotels and rooms that nobody wanted to go or pay for end-up in Last Minute deals (typically). You can at times, find some real gems though but it's a risky gamble.
Marina
Should I book a vacation dirctly through a hotel in order to get the early booking bonus or are there any travel agencies who offer it? I would appreciate any guidance about it. Thanks!
Lary
Most tour operator have it like westjet vacations, air canada Vacation and Transat Holidays. I would stay away from SUNWING.
You can go direct to them online or through an travel agencies, they all have the same price (unless they put a mark-up in it).
If they do the leg work for you and provide you recommendations, they should be charging you for their expertise and their time.
Marina
Great! Thank you for the advise Lary!

I really appreciate everyone's advice! In the end I ended up booking us at a smaller resort in the Yucatan Peninsula - Catalonia Yucatan. I think it will be better suited to anti-resort husband and my little kids. It had solid reviews for the most part. Would love to hear from someone who has been there or a different resort in the same area!

Booking a Last-Minute Family Vacation to Mexico: Tips and Considerations
Planning a family vacation to Mexico can be an exciting endeavor, but deciding when to book your trip can make a significant difference in terms of cost and availability. If you have flexible dates in January or February, you might be tempted to wait for last-minute deals. However, there are pros and cons to consider before making that decision.
The Pros of Booking Last-Minute
- Potential Discounts: Hotels and airlines often offer steep discounts to fill up their remaining inventory as the travel dates approach. If you're flexible with your dates and destinations, you might be able to snag a great deal.
- Availability: While popular destinations may sell out early, there's a chance that last-minute cancellations or unsold inventory could open up availability at desirable resorts or flights.
The Cons of Booking Last-Minute
- Limited Options: As travel dates get closer, your choices for flights, hotels, and destinations may become limited, especially during peak seasons like winter holidays.
- Higher Prices: While discounts are possible, there's also a risk that prices could surge due to high demand, especially for popular destinations and during school breaks.
- Stress and Uncertainty: Waiting until the last minute can be stressful, and you might miss out on securing the accommodations or flights you want, leading to disappointment or the need to compromise.
When to Book for the Best Deals
While there's no foolproof strategy, many travel experts recommend booking your Mexico vacation between three to six months in advance. This timeframe often offers the best balance of availability and pricing. However, if you're open to last-minute deals, keep an eye out for sales or promotions from airlines and travel providers.
WestJet's Current Sale
If WestJet has a sale going on now for travel to Mexico in January or February, it might be worth considering. Airlines often release discounted fares well in advance to fill up their planes. However, remember to compare prices across multiple airlines and travel sites to ensure you're getting the best deal.
Ultimately, the decision to book early or wait for last-minute deals depends on your flexibility, budget, and risk tolerance. If you're willing to take a chance and potentially compromise on your preferred dates or destinations, waiting for last-minute deals could pay off. However, if you have specific requirements or want to secure your preferred accommodations and flights, booking well in advance might be the safer bet.

Looking for some advice on when I should book a Jan/Feb family vacation to Mexico. Our dates are very flexible so wondering what the odds are of getting last min deal? westjet has a sale on now but I am tempted to wait and see what I can snag closer last minute. Advice welcome!
