Hi fellow travellers, my family will make a stop in Japan on the way back to Canada in March 2025. Hoping to get tips on best cities in Japan to travel with toddlers (2.5 and 4.5 yo), plan to be there for about 10 days and will fly out of Tokyo. Thanks in advance!

Nara.. they will love the deer roaming free.
Miyajima… stay over night. Magical at night.. deer sleeping everywhere and they light the lanterns all along the water.

10 days isn’t that long - I’d probably just pick 2 cities that interest you. Maybe 3 if you really have your heart set on a smaller destination. We really loved Kyoto and Tokyo with our 4.5 and baby.
We did do a few nights in Hakone - but for that short amount of time, I’m not sure i would bother.

Cailey may I ask when you travelled to Hakone? Was it super busy with tourists?

We are hoping to add prob one more city in addition to Tokyo. Kyoto, or Osaka are options, but they seem a bit far and not sure if we should just stay close to Tokyo to do day trips or somewhere closer by

Cedric lived in Japan for many years. I suggest Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura, Hakone
All accessible by train and you can make day trips out of them.

Top Cities in Japan to Visit with Toddlers

Traveling with young children can be a daunting task, but Japan offers a wealth of family-friendly experiences that can make your trip both enjoyable and memorable. With your toddlers aged 2.5 and 4.5 years old, here are some of the best cities to consider for your 10-day stay in Japan before flying out of Tokyo.

Tokyo

Tokyo is a bustling metropolis, but it also offers plenty of attractions that cater to families with young children. Start your journey at the iconic Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, where your little ones can marvel at the stunning architecture and friendly street vendors. Next, visit the Ghibli Museum, dedicated to the beloved Studio Ghibli animated films, where kids can explore interactive exhibits and immerse themselves in the magical world of Totoro and friends.

Kyoto

Kyoto is a must-visit destination for those seeking a glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage. Your toddlers will be fascinated by the majestic Nijo Castle, with its "nightingale floors" designed to chirp with every step, and the mesmerizing Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates. Don't miss the opportunity to experience a traditional tea ceremony, which can be a delightful introduction to Japanese customs.

Osaka

Osaka is known for its vibrant energy and delicious street food scene. Visit the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, one of the largest aquariums in the world, where your little ones can marvel at the diverse marine life, including whale sharks and penguins. The nearby Universal Studios Japan is also a hit with families, offering thrilling rides and attractions based on popular movies and characters.

Nara

Nara is a charming city that offers a unique opportunity to interact with friendly deer roaming freely in Nara Park. Your toddlers will delight in feeding these gentle creatures and exploring the park's serene surroundings. Don't miss the chance to visit the impressive Todaiji Temple, which houses one of the largest bronze Buddha statues in the world.

No matter which cities you choose to visit, Japan promises an unforgettable experience for the whole family. With its rich cultural heritage, delicious cuisine, and endless entertainment options, your toddlers are sure to create lasting memories during your 10-day adventure.
